“He Denied Everything”: Woman Calls Out Husband’s Cold Behavior After IQ Test Changes Him

Unless it’s your lifelong dream to become a member of Mensa or brag to everyone you know about what a genius you are, your IQ is likely not very relevant. But according to one man, it’s not only important to know his and his wife’s IQ scores, it’s also crucial that hers is lower than his.

Below, you’ll find a story that was recently shared on the True Off My Chest subreddit, where a woman detailed her husband’s reaction to finding out that she is, on paper, more intelligent than him.

This woman’s husband thought it would be a good idea for the both of them to take IQ tests

But after finding out that she had scored higher than him, his view of their entire relationship changed

Later, the woman posted an update on the situation, sharing that her and her husband would be taking a break

IQ tests have been a popular way of determining intelligence levels for over a century

The first famous example of an Intelligence Quotient, or IQ, test as we know it today was created in 1904 by Alfred Binet. Binet was directed by the French government to conduct studies and determine the average levels of students’ performance. IQ tests did not have completely innocent backgrounds, though, as the idea of testing people’s intelligence stemmed from the American eugenics movement. The formula for determining a person’s IQ is their “mental age” divided by their chronological age multiplied by 100. This is why, in theory, the average IQ is around 100, and a person who scores 130 or above is considered to be extremely intelligent.

According to Verywell Mind, some of the characteristics that high IQ individuals often possess are adaptability, curiosity, recognition of limitations, empathy, open-mindedness, and many of them enjoy being solitary. A few notable high IQ famous figures include Dr. Evangelos Katsioulis, a Greek physician with an IQ between 198 and 205; Richard G. Rosner, a television writer with an IQ between 192 and 198; Garry Kasparov, a Russian chess player with an IQ of 194; Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft, who had an IQ between 160 and 170; and theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, who had an IQ of 160. Today, IQ tests are often used for educational assessment and placement, assessment and diagnosis of intellectual disabilities, cognitive research, to evaluate job candidates and to assess cognitive abilities including memory, speed, and attention.

Nowadays, however, it’s well known that the tests aren’t perfect

Despite how famous IQ tests have become, it’s well known today that the tests do have some issues. According to Steve Connor at the Independent, one study has found that IQ tests are “fundamentally flawed because they do not take into account the complex nature of the human intellect and its different components.” Connor explains that IQ test results have often been used to claim that certain groups of people are more intelligent than others, but the reality is that one single measure is not enough to accurately determine how smart anyone is. “Several different circuits contribute to intelligence, each with its own unique capacity,” Dr Highfield, a co-author of the study, says. “A person may well be good in one of these areas, but they are just as likely to be bad in the other two.”

Jonny Thomson also wrote a piece for Big Think explaining that IQ tests are limited. He notes that rather than telling you exactly how intelligent you are, an IQ test can actually only tell you how well you have done on that specific test, compared to everyone else who has taken it. “[Some] assume IQ represents raw ‘brain power.’ Worse, some people equate IQ with worth,” Thomson writes. “Employers, especially, might write off a person based on a low IQ. Doing so fails to appreciate that many employees can offer skills and abilities that lie beyond the scope of IQ tests (such as personality factors like conscientiousness).” Meanwhile, this test is something individuals can study and prepare for to improve their scores, rather than being a true measure of who you are.

No one should be using their IQ to determine their, or anyone else’s, worth

IQ tests also tend to be skewed towards favoring white Westerners who have had access to education and resources. “My research has shown, for example, that the particular skills measured by traditional university admissions tests in the United States tend to favor the skill patterns of white and Asian students and disfavor those of black and Hispanic students,” Robert J. Sternberg wrote for New Scientist. “In any society, people who are privileged make it so that people like them can stay privileged. The tests turn out to correlate very highly with socioeconomic status, and it’s sort of a way of laundering that.”

While it can be fun to take an IQ test and brag to your friends about how well you scored, it’s important to remember that these are in no way an indication of how much a person is worth. In fact, it’s questionable if they’re even a good indicator of someone’s intelligence. We would love to hear your thoughts on this situation in the comments below, pandas. Feel free to share your thoughts, and then if you’re interested in reading another Bored Panda article discussing IQ, look no further than right here!

I come from a family of smart people. We are all intelligent in our own way. My mom is good with math, grammar, and technology and my father has never felt bad about having a wife that is more intelligent than him in certain areas. He is more intelligent when it comes to geography and location. Married couples should be proud of each other, not jealous.

I took a booklet-type IQ test that I got in the local bookstore on sale. Scored in the 'Mentally Challenged' range. I decided there and then to be the Founder and President of my new organization (DENSA - natch!), and not going to take it again in case I get booted out!

Back when I was studying for a psychology degree, we learned in one of the courses how when immigrants first came to the US at Ellis Island, they would administer IQ tests and label the new arrivals as stupid. Except in a lot of cases, obviously English was not their first language and they would include questions for which they had no cultural reference, like to identify a tennis racket. How would you know what one was if you came from a remote village? Lack of formal education does not denote lack of intelligence.

What an insecure little misogynist. A real partner is someone who is excited and proud to find out that their mate has skills and talents because that is going to give the couple more opportunities and options. Those are the people who understand that the whole -- the couple -- is made stronger by each person's contributions. They see their partner as a collaborator, not a competitor.

As someone with all the frilly papers and s**t for a "HiHg iQ," let me tell you that intelligence is worthless in everyday life. I'm no savant but the classic "they see the world differently" type. Being good with shapes and patterns can't help you in a romantic relationship and it doesn't make you superior to anyone else in any way. Numbers change nothing about how you are as a person and isn't even ever relevant beyond academics/work/certain reddit threads. I suffered from narcissism for quite some time and had to work on myself to get rid of it and fit in with society successfully. I try to never bring it up except in very certain situations because it sounds tacky and braggy. This guy will be in for a rude awakening though if he ever decides to take a real one though lol.

In the context of an IQ test, intelligence is, what an IQ test measures. Nothing more, nothing less. An internet intelligence test measures, if you are intelligent enough to take the result as the absolute useless peace of information that it is, or if you are more like this guy. Even though it might be possible, this was just an excuse of his to het himself a new gf or wife. Anyway, he's an absolute d******d.

It sounds like the straw that broke the camels back somehow. I understand the trust thing, but she is ready to bail with an 8 month old. I think this is just a focal point of a magnifying incident of him overall. Plus he is trying to gaslight her. Think hard. Brainiac. Most wouldn’t offer therapy. Leave him kicked out but give a few sessions of therapy a go. Keep him out for at least 6 months and then reassess. Your child is young enough to adjust either way.

What a very sad and ridiculous situation. That man has more issues underneath. It can be exhausting dealing with someone who is emotionally immature. I swear my husband has the mindset of a 13 year-old and he’s 56. Sometimes I’d say a toddler the way he can’t take care of himself and leaves messes in his wake for me to clean up. Has tantrums when he doesn’t get his way so often I capitulate. It’s all about the good times for him and his family. Fairly recently he revealed to me that when he was taking a college level certificate course back in the 90’s, a teacher administered an IQ test and he was labelled a “dullard.” So he’s always believed that underneath. I can’t believe that an unqualified college teacher for a course unrelated to psychology (for which I have a university degree), gave such test to students and then proceeded to label them with names like that. The damage that was done. It explains a lot of stagnancy of his personal growth, or lack thereof. So irresponsible.

As a clinical psychologist who has administered hundreds of individual IQ tests, I think it’s important to clarify a misconception about IQ tests. The explanation of the formula for determining a person’s IQ as, “Their ‘mental age’ divided by their chronological age multiplied by 100,” is actually false. That formula was discredited decades ago. The formula doesn’t work because the numbers don’t work. It might seem to work with young children, so if a 5-year-old gets the ‘mental age’ score of a 10-year-old, then the IQ score would be 200 (10/5 x 100 = 200), but if a 50-year-old got the ‘mental age’ score of a 25-year-old, their IQ would be 50 (25/50 x 100 = 50), and they might have an intellectual disability, which doesn’t make sense. When someone reports having an IQ above 200 (even above 170), it is usually because their IQ score was calculated using this outdated - and inaccurate - formula.

IQ tests do not measure your intelligence. It is used for different reasons such as Educational assessment and placement, Assessment and diagnosis of intellectual disability, Cognitive research, Job candidate evaluation, assessing cognitive abilities including memory, speed, and attention. What's he going to do if his daughter scores higher than him? Put her up for adoption and replace her with a dumber kid from the adoption agency? Get rid of him. He sounds like he is looking for an excuse for a divorce, so he can chase his co-worker or your SIL's sister

Sounds to me like the IQ test was just the straw that broke the camel's back. The guy's obviously got some issues and the test was more likely a symptom of his lack of respect for his wife rather than the cause. Clearly it's made things worse but the fact that he asked her to take the test, as if it would make things better to prove that she was less intelligent, implies that he's already got a problem with her.

IQ tests? Seriously? If those tests were all that accurate I'd be a Masters holder with a 6-digit salary per month yet here I am. Honestly, this is kinda why I stick to personality tests games or something similar to that. At least I'd get a kick or laugh out of the answers. By the way, smart women are sexier in my book. It's nice to be able to talk to a woman about something and find out she is actually into the same thing or better yet, is an expert when I'm at novice level. Think of it as kinda complimentary leveling up on my end and perhaps I can reciprocate one way or another.

After reading this - makes me think he cheated to get in the triple digits at all... It's sad too that this kind of attitude seems to be ingrained in many... guys (Generally... GENERALLY) already start acting squirelly/weird when a pretty woman is just as-or-smarter than them. When you're average looking and you DARE to speak in a manner that MIGHT hint that you MIGHT know **anything** they don't know (even if it was the focus of your degree and a completely different field from them) - well, then you get the hostile treatment. They act downright hateful - every time you speak, they hear "open challenge try a throwdown, humiliation, or a fight". In order to not be verbally SPAT ON by over half this TTRPG group I'm part of... I have to basically be SILENT. So yeah, I believe this.

Ordinarily I would say, "separate for three months, then decide what to do." But given the husband's attitude towards women (borderline misogynistic), AND they have a daughter, I don't see much hope for this marriage. Did he honestly think he was married to a Beanie Baby? What if his daughter's I.Q. turns out to be higher than his? His openly flirting with another woman in front of his wife sounded the death knell of this relationship. The trust is gone. The best that OP can do is get a lawyer, file the papers, and make sure that she and her daughter won't be destitute. Whoever gets stuck with this loser will find out soon enough that they got the booby prize.

I feel like maybe he was just planning the IQ test to manipulate her, or as a self-destructive thing to their relationship. I really think that he was going to respond like this regardless of her score. "Oh, I can't believe you're so much dumber than me, that's not attractive to me". It feels like a justification for cheating or something like that.

Alright, I think it's time to point out that IQ tests are not a good measure of intelligence due to the fact that there are different type of intelligences. I felt like that should be said. But, with that being said, the guy seems a bit insecure and views his partner as less than him. The guys needs therapy.

They have a daughter... he may love them both but doesn't respect or care about their well being if he has either outlook on a woman's intelligence and he needs to seek therapy before he can negatively affect his daughter with his stupidity. Wife needs to divorce him regardless because there is no way she can believe he won't go down the path of cheating if an online test result was a reasonable enough excuse this time.

That said, how high can her IQ be if she wrote "login's" instead of "logins". The misuse of apostrophes is a blight on humanity ;D
