Travelling to a small fishing town called Gulluk Located in Mandalya Bay on the Aegean Sea. Gulluk is foremost an unspoilt fishing port north of the Bodrum Peninsular. I was lucky enough to be there on Cabotage Day 2018 an annual festival related to merchant marine rights of Turkey held on 1 July.
The whole town comes out to celebrate theres complimentary food, there are vendors and fun by the sea port. From races, diving to displays, this was a day of community and of people coming together the whole event feels wholesome and reminds you what is actually important in a small town.
This is what needs to come back to our communities, a sense of togetherness and knowing you can count on your neighbours when needed.
Festival Facts:
The celebration of Cabotage Day begins with placing a wreath on Atatürk’s Monument. People then stand in silence as a gesture of respect, and this is followed by a singing of the National Anthem, speeches about the importance of the day, and other entertaining activities. Water sports clubs tend to organize various activities to contribute to the celebrations, due to the day’s deep relation with the sea.
