Yeah, that thing is a magnifying glass. If you really want/need decorative glass door knobs, buy faceted ones, those scatter the light (and make pretty colours!) instead of focussing it on one point

This is why my friend who's super into the paranormal says to always cover your crystal ball.. it's less about demons and more about fire prevention

Wow, that's pretty insane. I also learned this week that glass doorknobs harbor a lot of bacteria while brass ones are self sanitizing.

Be wary of glass spheres in general. Saw a 'crystal ball' for sale at a garage sale last year. I guess about the size of a grapefruit. The lady said to be careful where you place it because she had it in a planter (outside) as a decoration and the sun shining through it started a fire in the planter. So yeah - that is definitely a thing. In the right conditions they focus the light like a magnifying lens.
