Owning a home comes with a lot of responsibilities. It's not just unclogging the drain and mowing the lawn; there are plenty of unforeseen situations, just waiting to happen.

As shown by the subreddit 'Well, That Sucks,' the ceiling might decide to collapse, or a pack of uninvited sea lions might crash at your property for a surprise visit.

Hopefully, the sense of pride that you get from investing in your own place is strong within these folks!

That photo was taken in Arizona where bobcat attacks have definitely happened. Attacks are rare, but I certainly wouldn't fùck with it.

I live in a victorian property with a kitchen with loads of gaps that's impossible to keep completely clean. I hear him rattling around all the time. And apart from poison being incredibly inhumane, if he ate it he'd go to his nest behind the walls to die and I couldn't get to him and there'd be a horrific stink.

Yucky. Such a wonderful surprise when they do that. Our old farm cat used to leave the mouse heads and/or other certain specific mouse body parts (like the stomach or bladder) at our back door on the deck. So disgusting when you don't look before you walk out and step on it and it either makes a crush or a pop sound.

Yeah, that thing is a magnifying glass. If you really want/need decorative glass door knobs, buy faceted ones, those scatter the light (and make pretty colours!) instead of focussing it on one point

Be wary of glass spheres in general. Saw a 'crystal ball' for sale at a garage sale last year. I guess about the size of a grapefruit. The lady said to be careful where you place it because she had it in a planter (outside) as a decoration and the sun shining through it started a fire in the planter. So yeah - that is definitely a thing. In the right conditions they focus the light like a magnifying lens.

A previous iteration of this report, from January 2023, predicted a much steeper decline in spending, going from 16.3% at the end of 2022 down to just 2.6% by the end of 2023.

While the predicted drop of 5.9% for the first half of 2024 is much less shocking, it does emphasize the fact that, for another year, home improvement spending is expected to remain on a downward spiral.

This may indicate shifting priorities, but it's nearly impossible to talk about the drastic changes in home improvement spending over the last few years without reflecting on the Covid-19 pandemic and its influence on that specific market.

While there’s no denying that the pandemic had a devastating impact on the economy and life as a whole, it resulted in a drastic boom for all things home improvement.

While the U.S. economy shrank by 3.5% in 2020, spending on home improvements and repairs grew by more than 3%, to nearly $420 billion, as people modified living spaces for work, school, and leisure.

Stray/at large dogs don't pick the onions and garlic out of the trash they tear open and gobble our left overs from and they aren't dropping dead on the sidewalks. They will also stuff themselves with whatever they find. Incidentally, when I notice (dunno about you) random dog poo at the park, on city grass... not at someone's home, it's formed poo (I know, great visual and dinner convo!) not sloppy, slimy puddles of goo from eating whatever they've found or been fed from the back doors of restaurants. Like babies, fed is best! Calm down, geez. :)

Onions and garlic are poison to a dog definately beside some other things. But it is the amount of it that makes a dog sick or kills it. Chocolate is poison to dogs, too. In small amounts it raises their heartbeat, makes them feel sick. Big amounts can kill. I know people who fed their dog chocolate because 'one piece doesn't kill anyone'. Of course it did not die because it was just a little bite but it wasn't healthy for the dog. And stray dogs' are more tolerable to bad food than a dog who has a home and is used to eat proper dog food.

Hmmm, yes, but it is the responsibility of the gold course to ensure that people aren't launching golf-ball-shaped-missiles at people's houses. The golf club should be paying to replacement of those panels, and also erecting netting to prevent this. If the netting can't be erected, they should be reconfiguring the layout of the course to ensure this does not happen again.

The house may have been sold with a clause indemnifying the golf course against any damage due to errant golf balls. Many times houses are sold with the understanding that this may happen due to how close they are to the course.

All depends on when the house was built and any contracts/clauses/etc.. House first, liability is on the course, though they may pass it onto the golfer if they can identify them. Course first, it's on the homeowner.

Also my guess. But in excuse of the pigeon, I once read that their original habitat have been steep cliffs - so they really only needed a few sticks to prevent the egg from rolling of the really narrow spots where they nested on (too narrow to actually hold a fully build nest).... but yes, it still looks so pitiful to my eyes 🤭 *Edit: spelling.

The abrupt lifestyle and work changes that the pandemic brought on, coupled with the home equity growth, made it possible for many homeowners to delve into projects they would have otherwise skipped in other circumstances due to lack of time or funds.

However, as infection rates decreased and many people were able to leave their homes and return regularly to public spaces, home improvement spending rates dropped.

My aunt and uncle had an abusive relationship. Once, he got mad and threw a carton of eggs at her. They hit the wall. She refused to clean it up, as he made the mess. She was a hoarder, and her house was filled to the brim, so I never visited. About five years after Uncle died, I was with Mom when she wanted to see Aunt. The egg mess was still on the wall.

It is quite easy to not notice these things if the leak is at the back and going into the floor rather than forming a puddle in front of the machine. I had a problem quite recently with the now defunct hot supply to my washing machine. It seems that repeated use of the hot tap caused the pipe next to the isolator to repeatedly expand and contract causing the isolator to open ever so slightly. Worse, the cap that had been fitted to the open pipe *after* the isolator was not watertight. Only a slow drip, but enough to cause a lovely mess in the apartment below. Not properly capped off with a copper cap. And yes, I paid to redecorate the kitchen of the apartment below.

You learned a valuable life lesson - only walk on the framing boards in an attic, never on the insulation or in between. Drywall is not going to hold your weight.

However, Derek Walczak, Forbes Home Advisory Board member and owner and general contractor at Walczak Design + Build, says not to get your hopes up about lower pricing or more flexible workers' schedules just yet.

If you do find contractors that offer these seemingly too-good-to-be-true features, he advises to approach them with caution. "Pricing is a product of cost to operate, materials and, of course, cost to do the build. I don’t see any of those factors decreasing."

In case people think the “H” is what is left of the wall, the wood “H” is supporting the second floor until they can get somebody to repair the house. I am stating this because of all the comments of how our houses are just made of fragile materials. US housing is made with what we have an abundance of: forests.

I think it’s more the external brickwork stopping at about 1.5 m then what appear to be poor thin wood cladding above, essentially ending the cavity wall at 1.5 m. This offers very poor insulation.

That happened to my husband when he was in our guest tub/shower with glass door. He was actually taking a shower at the time. I herd a pop and ran in there to see my husband standing in a heap of glass. The breakage sounds just like it looks. He was bleeding at his knees and ankles and the top of his feet. Lots of blood. He was covered in glass "dust". He had to carefully rinse himself because he couldn't just "rub off" the glass dust. He only needed a few bandages and bandaids. It was really scary.

I was sleeping not too long ago, and was awakened by the sound of shattering glass. Immediately got out of bed, armed myself, and checked all the exterior windows. Found nothing amiss, so figured it was a vivid dream and went back to bed. The next morning I went into my kitchen and found the glass oven door shattered all over my floor! I hadn't even used the oven for about a week - I have pets - ferrets - but they're blocked off from the kitchen, and I seriously doubt even a large dog could have done that if it even wanted too!

It was put in sideways and not wrapped properly so white trying to remove a different pallet it came down. 2) The powder in the photo is an absorbent we use for paint spills this photo was taken about an hour after it fell."

I learned the hard way that no-one makes 27-inch ovens anymore. My RE agent was otherwise pretty awesome, but I was mad as hell at her suggestion to replace the old oven. (Turns out it was quite workable, too.) (They still make them, technically, but they are rare and therefore EXTREMELY expensive.. more than twice as much as a 30-inch.)

There was a summer kitchen with the house where we grew up. We used it as a playhouse. My brother would always kick the door open to go out. Once, when he was 13 and I was 10, he kicked it and it fell to the ground. We looked at each other, and we both said, "Dad's going to kill us!" My brother handed me the (heavy, wooden) door to hold while he moved the hinges. He forgot to move the hinges on the frame. So there was six inches of door that wasn't going to fit. My contribution was to say, "Well, it fit before!" Not knowing what else to do, my brother sawed six inches of the bottom of the door. We were both surprised at the six inch gap at the top of the door after he rehung it. The parents got home from work, and we're standing at attention, stupid, guilty smiles plastered on our faces. "What did you do?" "Nothing." When Dad found the door, he just shook his head and laughed. Turned out the wood was rotted, and Dad knew it needed to be replaced. Until he died, we'd tease my brother that if he ever had a problem, all he needed to do was to say six inches off of it.

So what does this mean for current homeowners? Is now a good time to renovate or purchase a home?

Although the housing market is uncertain, if you do decide to renovate, Walczak recommends keeping high-impact, high-ROI home improvement projects at the top of the priority list, while also considering how long you plan on staying in your current home to further inform you on what projects are worth it and achievable.

Walczak says that a good starting place could be remodeling kitchens and bathrooms because both typically add value and improve your daily experience within your home.

If you do decide to renovate, keep the long-term in mind, specifically if you are thinking about moving in the (near) future. “In the next five to 10 years, the neighborhood could completely change, so as long as you’re smart about any renovation and the construction is well thought out and designed, then you should make your money back and have better everyday quality of life for your family," Walczak says.

It was a stack against the wall. But they didn't stack properly such that the base was farther away from the wall than the top. Or have anything to secure the whole stack.

Genuine question: why are American houses built with wood mostly, why not bricks and concrete?

    Charles McChristy

Because it is cheaper, but still can be used to withstand a Category 3 hurricane. It also depends on other environmental factors in any particular region. America is a huge country. Not all houses are built in the same way.

The answers to why build with wood are hilarious! This looks like a house on the east coast and NO it's not cheaper to use "wood". I'm in the good ole USofA and my house is built with bricks and siding (which is made of composite and has cement in them) and it doesn't necessarily depend on where you live.

    Dilly Millandry

It's quicker to build houses with wood vs brick (bricks are often used on the outside so the property looks like it is brick built but they still may have a timber frame). That's another reason why they are cheaper. You save time, you some money on what you're paying builders.

Insurance agent here: neighbor's insurance would only pay if it was their fault the tree fell. Homeowner insurance doesn't work like auto insurance. My policy pays for damage to my home, not to my neighbor's home and vice versa.

A person's tree falls into your yard and damages your house, your insurance pays, unless they knew the tree was diseased and could fall - good luck proving that though.

Looking at the condition of the shingles and lack of granules they probably don't want to get their insurance company involved because they'll tell them they need a new roof or the insurance company will drop them. The neighbor would only be held responsible if the tree was unhealthy.

    Kira Okah
    Community Member
1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Take a look at the other two pictures on the OP for a more accurate assessment of the damage . The OP has filed on their own insurance after the neighbour's insurance refused, s they will have to fight the neighbour's insurance.

Acts of nature are covered, but the owner of the home's insurance pays. They don't care if it fell from your neighbors yard, or a tornado picked it up a block away and threw it at your house. The only way the neighbor would pay for your house is if you were negligent, you acknowledged the tree was going to fall and did nothing about it.

Not necessarily. The happened behind my ex's huge dresser during a particularly wet winter. I have a mold allergy as well, though possibly not as severe as the OP. Before he pulled the dresser away from the wall, I'd only noticed a faint mildew smell. Once he uncovered it, I had to avoid the house until he tore out and replaced the wall. The only thing I can figure is that the dresser blocked most of the spores from traveling through the room.
