People Are Sharing Interesting And Clever Secret Spaces They’ve Hidden In Their Houses, Here Are 50 Of The Best
For centuries, people have been locking up their most precious possessions in a variety of secret rooms and compartments. Whether it’s hidden chambers in Egyptian pyramids, mysterious passages in medieval castles or speakeasies during the Prohibition era, it seems that we've gotten pretty good at it over the years.
Just take a look at these two online communities, r/SecretCompartments and r/HiddenRooms, that are full of concealed spaces and other cool spots that are not so obvious at first glance.
From secret book pulls to Narnia-inspired wardrobes, Bored Panda has collected some of the best posts from these groups. If you’re looking for inspiration on how to create some discreet hiding places, continue scrolling and upvote your favorite ones!

My Daughter Just Found The Secret Street I Built Behind Her Wardrobe For Lockdown!
That's magnificent. I wish I was that talented.
Load More Replies...How was there this much space behind her wardrobe? Where in the house is it?
Oh come on! This would take a massive construction crew to build. Was your daughter in a coma while the construction was going on?
The Dad did it himself but I think the daughter knew
Load More Replies...It is beautiful, absolutely---but come on! Did you REALLY think we were going to believe your daughter "just" found it?!
Oh wow, this definitely qualifies you for the parent of the year award! Absolutely amazing!
What was behind her closet to begin with?!?! Also, me turning my nieces bedroom at my house into a Harry Potter room for Christmas is a little underwhelming now. I have all the movie posters. Bedding. She already had an altar with an iron cauldron but I've added dried herbs and flowers in glass bottles. 50 different stones and crystals I'm glass bottles. I've got a printers tray coming that's new but looks old to put them all in. She's 10 & a half and just started sleeping in there by herself. It's my brothers old room, her dads, so I'm trying to make it her own.
Both of these online communities are full of enthusiasts who enjoy sharing images of their home secrets and sometimes even the process of constructing them. The moderators of r/HiddenRooms encourage users to "post pictures and discussions of hidden rooms, secret passages, discreet minibars, trap doors, and other cool secret spaces."
And more than 72.9K members do exactly that, showing how those places are accessed via an invisible door, which could be camouflaged as a bookshelf, a cupboard or a trapdoor in the floor.
While this subreddit focuses more on entire rooms that are hidden in plain sight, the online page r/SecretCompartments is dedicated to concealed parts in your furniture, decorations or even toys. Since its creation in 2016, it has grown into a community with 206K members who treat their privacy as a top priority and keep their personal belongings and memories safe from curious eyes.
Behind The Murphy Door
This is my dream, lots of books great shelves to display them and a secret place to read them
Nobody would ever find me until someone finally said, "Hey, what's that smell coming from behind the bookcase?"
It seems that secret spaces have a wide appeal since people are intrigued by the cunning that goes into creating such spots and things. We reached out to Jill Herro, owner of Secret Compartment Furniture, a company that focuses on creating handmade furniture that is not only beautiful on the outside, but also hides your possessions "in plain sight".
She was kind enough to talk a little bit more about secret compartments and the reasons why people decide to have them. The idea behind starting her own business came from a personal need since Herro wanted to have a nice piece of furniture to store her valuables in. However, when she started looking, all that she found "looked like some guy's garage project—hardly anything I would want in my home."
"Then, 6 months later, I got laid off from my pharmaceutical sales job and figured if I was looking for nice furniture for that reason, there must be others doing the same," she told Bored Panda. "Since I live one hour north of the largest Amish community in the world with over 450 furniture makers, I figured I would give furniture design a try!"
Wardrobe Inspiration From Narnia
What?! This is how a hidden room is done! Well, this is how mine would look in my dreams. And that constellation map... beautiful!
My grandmother's house had a pass-through closet like this. It was at the bottom of the stairs, if I recall correctly. I was very little at the time. She kept her winter coats hanging there and it went to the kitchen. I LOVED it. I'm old now, but I still remember that closet and the fragrance of her long wool coats. A precious memory.
I wonder if there is one of those warnings they put on things - "*Wardrobe opens to garage stairs, not magical land"

That’s what we call them in the UK too. Well, at least my family do, maybe this is where I find out no one else does…?
Load More Replies...According to her, people want to have discreet hiding spaces in their furniture simply because it’s fun and it "instantly turns everyone into a 12-year-old". But on a more serious note, it just seemed logical to her that hiding your precious belongings in plain view is the way to go.
"Burglars know to grab the jewelry box, check the bedside drawer, check the dresser drawers, etc.," the furniture designer explained. Just imagine the confusion when your fine jewelry or money is not hidden there: "Their goal is to get in and out in less than 4 minutes. Hide those items in an unexpected place, and they will walk right past it."

i need that much storage and maybe my room wouldn’t be such a mess lol
"Every show I do I hear a story about someone being robbed, and 'they got the jewelry box, and I don't really care about most of it, but they got grandma's Tiffany necklace from the ‘30s, and it cannot be replaced...' Those stories break my heart. Put the costume jewelry in the jewelry box so they think they got something but put the good stuff in the coat rack!"

Secret Bathroom With A Bonus
I was once stuck in our tiny bathroom. The lock broke and the door wouldn't open. Thank goodness my husband was home and was able to remove the hinges and lift the whole door off. So this makes me think about being there, alone in the house, getting stuck in there, nobody hears my scream. Don't get me wrong, I love these secret places but this one, being a small bathroom is scary. Now that I live alone, I never lock my bathroom door, hardly even close it (unless someone is visiting of course).
I live alone, but have to shut my bathroom door, because I prefer my cat not to join me while I'm in there. I used to just push it shut, but she's wise to that now. So your name is interesting. . .
Load More Replies...Why a bathroom that is hidden? I guess you could do your reading in there.
I'm just peanut butter and jealous that you have your. Own. Freaking. LIBRARY
The solutions people come up with to "outsmart" others are also entertaining to see. "I think people enjoy looking at those things because it is creative and surprising. It is unexpected. It shows time and effort," Jill Herro explained. "I take pride in the fact that my designs look totally 'normal'. Some of the other stuff available out there looks 'unbalanced' or out of proportion."

And the beer will be cold! Unless this thing chills the beer while it’s hiding it.

My Dining Room Table Houses A Secret Spiral Staircase
Does anyone know when this pic appeared online? I'm wanting to know if it was before or after mid 2017 (it creepys me out when I see it because, well, too long to explain). I want to know if I saw this picture before an event, which would explain everything. However, if it's post that date, it's really uncanny bordering on unsettling for me 😅 anyone who knows where to find out pls let me know
Thanks guys, lol ah this is just creepy. I saw this pic a few months ago on this site and almost panicked: backstory is long but during a deep coma, in my mind part of my routine was going into a table made from an old upcycled large cable spool reel, underneath which was a spiral staircase leading to a circular space for books, coats, storage and bedroom space? However this was in 2017. I was REALLY hoping I had seen this before then, and that image had therefore been iny memory and used by my mind in my coma. But every time I see this picture I feel sick 😳 I know the explanation will be coincidence, but still don't like it 😅 like, is it still happening, did I really wake up?
Load More Replies...Yeah, the shuttlecocks are really weird choice for wallpaper.
Load More Replies...However, the most difficult part for her was to get the business up and running. While the clients loved her work, it just couldn’t get any traction: "I got zero word-of-mouth referrals because nobody wants their friends to know what that beautiful piece of furniture does! I even have customers who refuse to tell their spouse or adult children what it does. I have had husbands purchase items as a gift for their wife, and not tell them about the secret compartments."
$4000 Plug
This would be better as one of those cable outlets than electrical. Too easy to see if it works or not as an electrical outlet.
Do you think thieves will go around with like a lamp testing outlets to see if they are actually secret hiding places?
Load More Replies...I had something similar to this in the house my grandad built, but it wasn't lockable. There was a pull out drawer you could see, but once it was out, you could put your hand down one of the sides of the cavity and slide another secret drawer out.
Honestly, it's not too smart to keep paper cash in this. If there were a house fire, you'd lose the money.
Now you've shown the world you'll have to think of another place to stash your cash!

Scrolling through this post, you will see the amount of creativity and cleverness that goes into these projects. There are no limits on what you can do with just a couple of tools and an idea in your head. Making a secret room in your house or thinking of a discreet compartment in your furniture not only provides a safe space for you to stash your possessions and hide your memories, but also shows you that the magic of things is often hidden.

Sleeping Spot On A Plane
These are quite common, especially on transoceanic flights like Sydney to London. Its 21 hours for the flight crew from the time they board to the time they get the last passenger off the plane. You need a place for the off shift pilots and attendants to sleep that doesn't take up sellable seat space.
Yes, please don't use them as a passenger. You'll get into deep trouble if we find you and may be barred from the airline. It's not worth it.
That's what we all said initially, but believe me, this job is so tiring, you don't care, you just want to sleep.

My grandson would love this. Only problem he might try this himself.
Imagine: you have lived in this house for over a year one day when turning a corner you jam your pinky toe into the wall. The lego covered wall. You howl in pain having both stepped on a lego and stubbed your pinky toe. You immediately fall onto the floor. never having been in this amount of pain in your life. You try to stand but you can't. You lay on the floor crying and clutching your foot. You bleed out all because of your lego wall.
Secret Bookshelf
There's a company that makes these. They're specifically designed so you can store handguns, shotguns, and even assault rifles in book cases. Cause there's no chance of kids wanting to show their friends this really cool thing their dad got. No way will they result in dead kids...
How heartwarming to know they designed this purely to hold murder weapons. :/
Load More Replies...Yeah, that's all good and dandy but does it lock since you are using to store your guns and ammo?
My parents had guns hidden away when I was a kid. I found them and handled them, without training, with no parents around, with no words of caution. 40 years later my mother is bragging that I grew up with hidden guns in the house and didn't know. It's a miracle I survived my childhood. Don't be my mother.
If you are going have guns in your house or even if your kids might go somewhere that does they need to know basic gun safety from as early as possible. My kids have always known gun safety and as teenagers they know how devastating a gun is and that its a last resort for defense. They know you don't get a restart or extra ljves they respect them. More kids need education as well as adults because many people know nothing about weapons education is best weapon we have to fight ignorance.
Load More Replies...I found on Etsy, search for Hidden Drawer Shelf. Not cheap btw.
Load More Replies...I think trigger locks would solve the issue of securing the guns. Plus extensive education of the kids regarding proper gun safety procedures and training. Depends on age.
That’s why people who own guns have LOCKED GUN SAFES to keep children away from guns without adult supervision. Ps I’ve been shooting since I was 4. I have a bow and arrows and tons of pocket knives. I’m not afraid, as a young female, to go in public alone because I can defend myself.
This is locked too. No access, and if there is parents get held accountable.

I think I remember a US panda asking what a priest hole was once so here's something incase 🙂 A priest hole is common in medieval UK manor / religious houses. They are extremely small spaces cut out of the wall, often hidden behind wood panelling (though they can be cleverly doubly disguised as cupboards). They often only had enough space for a crouching priest, a Bible and occasionally a gun. They were necessary during multiple religion based civil wars in the UK when either side tried to oust the others diety. Edit to clarify - warring factions, often of the same faith 😂

I Think This Belongs Here
This eerily reminds me of a Sunday afternoon spent at the house of a church friend. Church friend was someone I only saw on Sundays because we went to different schools. Many Sundays I would go spend the afternoon at some friends' home until time for evening services, when I would again meet up with my family and go home. Well this Sunday was no different. Until my friend asked me if I wanted to see the special room her dad and she shared. It was in the back of her closet and opened into a small, unfinished space. Every square inch was covered with nude photos of women- like Playboy centerfolds. There was a pallet on the floor. She said that's where they played. I didn't know what to say. So I said nothing. Ever. I regret that every day of my life now. I'm 51 years old. I said nothing. I think of her all the time.
I can't erase that from my mind. How repulsive.

I don't want any srt of cave. I want a nice well lighted room with good ventilation.
There's a little unassuming place in Omaha called "Looking Glass Spirits and Curiosities". You walk into the store and it's about a 3m by 4m space is all, with a small register and every wall completely filled with liquor for sale. Except one of the shelves along the back wall is a hidden entrance to a fair-sized speakeasy :) I don't know the history of the place, but it has the feel of a prohibition era "drug store" that no longer has to hide their real business :)
Much as I love the bookcase hidden doors I can't help but picture myself opening them and making all the books and items fall out or tip over, all in a jumble... :p
It doesn't cost that much. I had one made for under $200.
Load More Replies...I like how a lot of these are like, "Shhhhh, I've got a secret room...it has books...please don't tell anyone I have books!"
