I feel like the worst type of homophobia isn't the explicit one, where people actively try to hurt a queer person. That's obviously terrible and can really destroy people, but the worst kind is when someone doesn't understand. The ones who don't really support but don't try to go against, and spread misinformation. I know several people and the only info they have on the LGBTQ community is from fellow homophobes, so they don't have a basic understanding that it isn't a phase, or trans people have rights, or anything like that. They just don't understand. E.x., my parents 😭
I've had some pretty bad experiences. There was a sign saying 'protect trans kids' up in one of the classrooms, and one girl ripped it into pieces and threw it in the garbage can. I didn't see it happen, but I asked a group of kids if they'd seen who did it. One of the girls told me who it was, and she said she'd seen the whole thing. But she didn't do anything about it. Wtf? Anyways, when I confronted the girl who had actually ripped it up, she talked about it like she was proud of it. The worst part was that she and I used to be friends. The whole thing made me sick. I was totally livid.
The worst? In 1987, a close friend from the punk scene was bashed by 3 guys on his way to the local gay club....
He didn't survive his injuries....
He was a good kid, on his way to meet up with his first boyfriend..... fûcking pigs didn't even get charged with murder.....
I’ve been really lucky in that I haven’t really had too much hands-on experience with homophobia; the worst I’ve had is just being called slurs/pronouns “corrected”/called “of the devil” or that we “stole the rainbow” or are “supporting pedophilia” online in comment sections like BP or insta. However, my friends have unfortunately had a lot of experience with homophobia/transphobia. When my friend came out as trans to their dad, their dad didn’t accept them, and kept saying every day to them “you’re my daughter” and calling them “ladylike” and stuff to the point where they like school better than home and started to question themselves again and went into a really bad mental state. My other friend has a lot of dysphoria cuz their parents won’t buy them gender-affirming stuff, and I have to call them their dead name in front of their parents. I’ve also heard some really out of pocket stuff in the halls of our school, but fortunately I haven’t been the subject of much homophobia in-person or physically. I think that’s more because I keep a low profile, though, and hide that my mom has a girlfriend and that my gender/sexuality differs from the norm
Idk if this counts but a random lady destroyed LGBTQ bumper stickers/decals on the car of one of the managers where I work.
I’m scared as I’m queer myself. I’m also afraid because she could be racist/ableist. I’m autistic and one of my close friends is also queer, disabled, and neurodivergent
