For example: Years ago when I was on the morning train after a night working, two guys thought it was funny to harass me. After I politely asked them to leave me alone (I literally didn't have the energy for any other response), another passenger directly told them "the lady said no", and the other commuters (non)verbally joined in. The dudes left. I didn't expect people helping me out, whilst being complete strangers to me. I'm still grateful.

At my temp job, me and my collegue were applying for the same permanent position. His job interview was planned 2 hours before mine. Directly afterwards, he called me to tell me which questions were asked during the interview, so I could prepare myself better. I got the job. It took him one more year before he could get a permanent posistion. He still is my dearest collegue.

I was at a saloon/ bar that plays live music every Thursday. Well, they give out prizes to first-timers every week. When the lead singer asked who was new, I raised my hand (it was in fact my first time there.) He looked at me and without hesitation said, “Well, this lady just has the nicest smile. Come up here.” So I did, and he gave me a plate of cookies. “You’d want to give her a plate of cookies too if you saw her smile.”

Almost cried out of happiness right then and there. Weeks later, I go back there regularly and he knows me by name. I feel like compliments mean more when they’re from someone you don’t even know, because they aren’t biased.
