When 19-year-old Brandon Swanson crashed his car into a roadside ditch near Minnesota West Community and Technical College in May 2008, his first instinct was to call his parents for help.
As they tried to determine his whereabouts, the teenager described his surroundings and began making his way toward what he believed was the nearest town.
He was cutting through fields and climbing fences to save time.
