IKEA Releases Instructions How To Make ‘Game Of Thrones’ Cape After Costumer Reveals Actors Wore IKEA Rugs

Being a member of the Night’s Watch in Game of Thrones doesn’t sound like much fun. The constant threat of danger and death at the hands of Wildlings and White Walkers. Vows of celibacy. Freezing your ass off daily. There really is very little about their job that you’d actually want. They do however have some pretty cool fur capes, and you don’t need to be a Brother to get one. All you need is a $79 SKOLD IKEA rug and some time for a DIY project, because believe it or not, that’s what the tough Game of Thrones characters of the Night’s Watch have actually been wearing on their backs this whole time.
The truth was revealed by head Game of Thrones costume designer Michele Clapton at a talk at the Getty Museum in LA last year. “These fur throws are actually IKEA rugs,” She said. “We take anything we can; we cut, and we shave them, and then we added strong leather straps. I want the audience to almost smell the costumes.” Want to make your own? Then you’re in luck because IKEA has released a simple set of instructions in their trademark easy-to-follow format. Scroll down to see the IKEA Game of Thornes merch for yourself. Better hurry up though. Winter is coming!

We’re not sure if anybody would find the Night’s Watch so scary if they knew what they were wearing

In response IKEA released their iconic instructions about how to make your own
Just cut a hole for your head in one of their $79 SKOLD rugs
Pop the rug over your shoulders
And you’ll be ready to take your vows!
Voilà!

When you put it on, you magically grow hair, get a beard and a sword! Sparkles not included
Ahh, but the tattoos are. ;D
duuude...that's snow, not sparkles...because winter has come, you know...
❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️ I'd add Jon Snows "Accent" to the "things that you magically get after putting this on"!
I dubbed them sparkles!
What's really funny is that IKEA rugs were originally based on old Scandinavian winter capes.
That is funny!
What's even more funny is that old Scandinavian winter capes are made from dead animals hehe....hehehe..... heeeh.. hmmmmm *hides his face in shame*
I don't think they were. IKEA rugs are just sheep rugs like any other.
They were not, and if they were. Give me sources, you can't just say stuff like that without giving sources.
That is what is known as a joke, my dear.
Except that Jon Snow's cape, as shown in this photo, is one of the ones that is NOT a sheepskin! And... cutting a hole like that in a sheepskin like that is not the correct way to do it... :)
XD Are you real?
No - a figment of your imagination. WoooOooOOooo...
Haha, well, figment, I've been looking for you, wondering where you could be wandering!!
I agree. The pattern is wrong.
You sound fun.
Is that the smell of sarcasm I detect? :)
Then pray tell, what is the correct way?
In the same way that you wouldn't cut a hole like this in a piece of fabric and expect it to look nice as a cape, you wouldn't cut a hole in a skin or piece of leather - you need a real pattern! In the case of Jon Snow's cape, however, it's more likely that the skin isn't cut at all - the side/flank of the skin is against Jon's neck, you can see the two leather straps crossing over his chest that are sewn at the head and rump of the skin that are holding it on. :) In a more refined garment, there are ways to cut the fur skin in slits and resew it (called letting out, or stranding) that could enable the fur to flow correctly in the garment and also change the skin to the necessary shape (i.e. it can lengthen the skin).
Oh, and you WOULDN'T use scissors!!
Thanks Emily!
