Cassette is technically correct. the 3.5" floppy was housed in a small case, or cassette... and the name wasn't just a carryover from the 5.25" Floppy. The disk inside the plastic cassette of the 3.5" was still just as floppy as the one inside the sleeve of the 5.25" floppy. Break one open some time and see for yourself. There were also 2-inch, 2½-inch, and 3-inch floppies, but in the end the Sony 3.5" won the market. Everyone talks about the 5.25" like they were old-school, but those were actually the smaller version of the original 8" floppies. Not as many people know about those because they predate the World Wide Web and fewer people had PCs at that time.
