While more and more people are becoming tech-savvy and can solve simpler issues on their own, the technology world still remains a mystery for many. Just think about the times your darling computer made weird noises, voiced all kinds of complaints, or, heaven forbid, showed the giant blue error you definitely did not want to see. Then, there’s only one place to turn — tech support heroes.

However, if you think all IT specialists do is tell you to hit the restart button or help you with that "major" issue with the printer that’s not even plugged in yet, there’s a whole subreddit that might prove otherwise. Enter Tech Support Gore, a community full of the worst cases professionals ever stumbled on while on the job and clueless people they had to deal with along the way.

Laptops drying in the oven, mold growing on headphones, and impractical shortcuts customers take without a care in the world are just a few of the monstrosities that employees had to witness. So get ready to scroll through some of the most nightmarish pictures Bored Panda has collected from the group. And if you’re in the mood for some more gadget madness, take a look at our previous compilations right here, here, and here.

From the logic that brings you "let's use a jet engine to dry a flooded cricket pitch, and, to prove we don't have the monopoly on dumb, "our baseball pitch is rained out, let's set it on fire" (yes, both actually happened). This is almost restrained by comparison.

The Tech Support Gore subreddit has been around for quite some time. Recently, this online group celebrated its 10th birthday with all its 532K technology-loving community members. "You will cringe to the brink of passing out after a few minutes looking at this subreddit," the moderators wrote in the description and the content users post there serves as proof.

Nearly every post consists of the nastiest and most baffling incidents people somehow managed to accomplish. After all, we have the manuals, the internet, and, most importantly, our common sense for a reason, so it's easy to say they have a talent to fail this badly.

But let's face it, even if we consider ourselves to be really tech-savvy and proudly declare to know how to properly care for our gadgets, accidents still happen. Whether it’s thinking that fixing up your computer would be a cakewalk or that you suddenly came up with a brilliant new way to rescue your soaking wet device, nearly everyone could end up being shamed on this subreddit.

I once had a temp job at the Department of Defense. I was vetted, scanned, patted, and - my possessions confiscated right down to the spare change in my pockets - escorted to an enormous, stunningly hot, darkened room filled with dozens of empty desks and racks of humming tech. Every unit in the place was full of cockroaches. _Stuffed_ with cockroaches. It was an entire floor of LED-blinking cockroach condominiums. Disturb any of it and _floods_ of cockroaches would chitter across the floor by the thousands. It was the sound that got me: like a million sheets of paper being gently shuffled. I removed myself, informed them they needed an exterminator, not an engineer, and went home to take a Xanax and pet the cat. At least they paid me the full contract.

However, many pictures from this list prove how incompatible with technology some people are. But if the first thought that crossed your mind was that the older generations are probably responsible for such nightmarish slip-ups, recent research seems to indicate they’re not as technologically illiterate as many might believe.

According to Pew Research Center, while there are still notable differences between American adults under 30 and those 65 and older, tech use by those in the oldest age group has grown significantly compared to a decade ago. So as it turns out, the gap between the oldest and youngest adults has shrunk.

Researchers conducted a survey in 2021 by questioning over 1.5K adults by cellphone and landline phone. The results showed that 96 percent of those ages 18 to 29 own a smartphone compared with 61 percent of those 65 and older. So while it’s still a 35 percent difference, the gap has decreased from 53 points in 2012.

Did this to my own overheating Asus laptop (brand new device at that time). Removed the cover and drilled extra holes with a Dremel. Also used tape to make the airflow more efficient, covering some gaps that shouldn't have been there. And replaced the factory thermal compound on the CPU and GPU with "liquid metal" compound from Thermal Grizzly. Before this, my CPU would hit spikes of 106 degrees C, leading to severe thermal throttling. After my modifications, spikes would only reach around 93 C and no more CPU throttling. Mine looks even worse, but I don't care as long as my CPU frequency doesn't suddenly drop mid game from 3 Ghz to 400 Mhz anymore.

It's always the ASUS laptops. Had to do the same with mine, kept getting heat spikes even with the system in "gaming mode" with the fans throttled to max. Made some new air holes to work with the radiator fins they had in the back and bingo steady cooling and temp dissipation.

do different sections / offices in a corporation not talk to each other? Like shouldn't the IT department have known that the datacenter had flooded and would need a deep cleaning and that they should be talking to the cleaning staff to make sure it's done correctly without interrupting services? And Shouldn't the cleaning team coordinate with the IT people so the IT people know deep cleaning is going on and they might need shut down or move, or otherwise protect the IT equipment?

Smartphones aren’t the only piece of tech that old people are quickly starting to embrace. However, the situation with tablet computers is somewhat different. Those aged 30 to 49 were the most likely people to own one, and the ones aged 65 and older were the least likely to have a tablet.

When it comes to our beloved internet use, virtually all younger adults (99 percent!) now say they use the internet. Compared with the older generation, only 75 percent of participants reported being internet users. However, things were quite different in 2000. Then, the gap between the oldest and youngest groups of adults was 56 percentage points, and right now it has decreased to 24 points. So while not everyone was born into electronics, more and more people are leaning toward it. After all, it makes life better and generally more convenient.

Cockroaches LOVE computers. And small kitchen appliances. I volunteered at a "Christmas in July" community outreach program in our city, and helped clean up an elderly woman's home. I did the kitchen, & everything had roaches under & in it. My son lives in New Orleans & they have had small appliances ruined by roaches getting in them - they had to keep their laptops in sealed bags when they weren't using them. Then I found Advion. That stuff actually works!

Bored Panda previously reached out to one of the moderators of the Tech Support Gore subreddit, Coffeechipmunk, who revealed that the most popular posts are those that depict situations just moments away from exploding. "[It's] very dangerous, but very cool looking. They probably get so big because people post the pics and you think, 'Wow, that's just a bomb at that point.'"

"A lot of the content on the subreddit does rather well, except for people coming for actual tech support, they get redirected to the right subreddit. For actual tech support gore, though, it seems like broken screens and slightly messy wires are the current posts that don't hit too hard," the moderator added.

Actually not as bad as it looks. I thought the wiring looked dodgy, but they have put heatshrink over the joins. Would be better with an inline fuse to guard against shorts, as a car battery can deliver hundreds of amps. It's not much different than plugging into the lighter socket in your car. I'm assuming the laptop takes 12-13.5V DC. If it takes 19V DC or AC, it ain't going to work.

In my experience, mac's use three-cell batteries for a nominal 12v supply. 12v at the input wont charge the internal battery but will run the system alright.

Easy to tell who doesn't know how electricity works. That's a simple 12v DC power supply, and it will run almost any laptop with no problem at all. Charging requires a higher supply voltage than the battery's output voltage, so a 12v battery won't charge a14.4v laptop battery but it will run the laptop for far longer than the internal battery. If the laptop has a 10.8v battery it will probably charge it, although at a slower rate than with a standard power supply with a 19v output.

FFS! Those magnetic 360° chargers come with 6' of cable and iPhone/USB C/USB micro tips (ALL 3 in 1 package) for like, $5-6! Once you've got the cord you can replace the tips for not even $1. I bought several just so I'd have them on hand for others when they needed them. I keep my tip plugged into my phone and then just wave it around the side of my bed - the magnets always find each other and then I can move the phone as much as I want since the tips are on a swivel.

I have those too, they're fantastic for devices that get plugged in and out a lot. So many devices get thrown away just because of worn charger ports. Even if you're careful there's only so many times you can plug something in and out before all that friction wears something down or loose.

If it bursts it catches on fire. It’s not like a candle flame fire it’s like a torch while it burns out. If this was in your drawer or near your bed when it went off it would burn your house down

The mod explained that the term "Tech Support Gore" refers to "stuff in the tech support or IT field that's a computer comparable version of gore," and added, "Instead of a heart ripped out, it's CPU pins. Slightly less awful." Coffeechipmunk also revealed that the most horrible cases they’ve seen on the community while moderating were "anything with bugs in it. That's the worst.” Well, we couldn’t agree more. As you probably already noticed from this list, they’re truly awful.

Carefully wrap lower end in foil, tap on lower side about 3 times, drop in a ziploc baggie, fill with sugar and shake for 3 minutes. Squeeze batteries side between your fingers and walk over to the garbage can. Drop in.

Nobody has pointed out that you should not mix different types of batteries. Probably why they're leaking. Throw the batteries in the recycling. It's not worth damaging your equipment.

If you're take stuff apart out of curiosity, get the proper tools for the job. (To be clear, this should not be done with functioning hard drives as they are hermetically sealed for a good reason - but with an old bust one it's worth opening one up just so you can learn and understand how they work like the drive arm and platters... and the very tight tolerances between them)

    Evil Little Thing
    Community Member

Yeah. A screwdriver would have taken that casing off in a minute. Also just a technicality- hard drives aren't hermetically sealed. They are put in metal cases to prevent damage from debris, not airtight.

The reason harddrives are sealed is because they are usually filled with inert gases and react very badly to getting dust inside them. If you think you have to open a HDD, it is likely dead beyond anything you are able to recover yourself.

12 screws does seem a lot, I can think of dozens of laptops where it was 1 or 2 screws and the drive would just slide out without having to open it up. That said, they were prone to the drive sometimes needing a little push to ensure connectivity.

The way us toilets are made, the water acts as a 'lid' to block stinky sewer smell/sewer gas from coming into the house. Trust me, it is not blocked and very much neccessary.

It's an Avengers Endgame reference. The BBEG tells a character that tried to chop off an arm to stop said BBEG that they "should have gone for the head". In other words, the person who tried to kill this computer should have tried harder, because it still seems to work.

    Lakota Wolf

You don’t have to remove them from items you use frequently. But if it’s something you won’t be using for a while, or don’t use often, you should remove the batteries. For example, any battery-powered Christmas or Halloween decorations should have their batteries removed before storage. For devices you use often, just pop off the cover once a month or so and take a peek at the batteries to check on them. And corrosion isn’t the end of the world - it can be safely and easily cleaned off of the connections and the device should work fine with new batteries!

Once did something similar when my heatsink pulled the CPU out of the socket by mistske. You can fix that by straightening the pins with a tiny piece of paper and a toothbrush. But it takes at least a couple of hours and only works if none of the pins are actually broken.

Another trick is to use a credit/library card. Run it slowly through the pins to straighten them out

recoverable with a razor blade, a magnifying glass, and a steady yet delicate touch. Also if you just have one or two bent pins around the edges it's worth looking up a diagram of the pin layout for the specific chip because some of them are redundant pins and so as long as they're not impeding any pins that are, you don't have to fix them perfectly in order to get the chip working

Forklift drivers... We have several network cabinet installed on the wall at 15ft hight so they won't hit it, but they still manage to run into them. Not that badly though, but I still have to lift/push/wiggle the doors in a certain way to open them.

Not that bad considering those are usb hubs and not outlet extensions. Just don't expect that many usb unpowered 3.0 devices to work at the same time if they're drawing more power than it's rated for.

Frequency will drop, when the loaf on the power grid is too heavy .. btw: old stove clocks use the power grid frequency instead of a crystal, that's why they tend to fall behind the real time.

They actually lose time due to internal friction in the mechanism due to lack of lubrication after decades. Load pulls down the local voltage, frequency stays the same as it is mechanically locked to the generators. Frequency compensation for Drift occurs in the middle of the night so there are precisely 5,184,000 (if memory serves) cycles per 24 hour period.

It's not that it's upside down, intel generally has the pins on the motherboard not the chip, whereas amd still have the pins on the cpu. It's the fact the pins that are on the motherboard are bent af.
