People with tattoos know that there is a whole culture that comes along with it and it's something that the non-tattooed don't know about. You don't necessarily have to be a part of it, but there's always support between those inked. Sure there is less of a stigma now, but those with ink are still sometimes misunderstood by some types of silly categorization. A tattoo artist must be a member of some bike gang, right? Speaking as someone who's been in the body modification industry for almost 20 years, $200 for a tattoo of that quality is incredibly unusual. Regarding the other one, it actually looks more like a tattoo of a child's drawing. I've seen lots of tattoos that parents have got of their kid's drawings. It's quite a cute idea. However, if that isn't the case here (which I highly doubt), that person shouldn't be allowed to tattoo anymore.

That's what I thought, that a child drew it. Tattoo artists charge for the time involved. The one on the left obviously took several sessions to complete. The one on the right looks like it took 30 minutes.

Same here. Mainly as I am allergic to some colourings and every slight paper-cut becomes infected so I can't help thinking it would probably be a disaster. I do love a good tattoo on others though. Good being the key word here - my sister has one on her back that looks like her child did it with felt-tip pens and she wanted me to try 'her' guy. Um... no ta.

Yes. Unless you're getting one word done in script on your forearm you're going to feel it. It's not like getting hit with a sledgehammer but you will feel it. You also have to remember if you get a large or detailed piece of art you're sitting in 3-4 hour blocks of needles stabbing you. It's not the same feeling as a 1-2 hour and done.

Sadly too many people do not understand that the tattoo may need some new ink later. The colors and details may fade when the skin becomes older. So also a beautiful tattoo may look bad after 10 years if you do not let any tattoo artist to fix it.

The only regret I've had on any of my tattoos at this point is not the tattoo, but the placement. If I were to do it again, I would do it 1 inch lower! It's right where my neck meets my back and just SLIGHTLY shows above shirts, no enough so people can see what is is, but just enough that people think my tag of my shirt is showing and will try and tuck it in for me and then realize it's my tattoo. My mom has done this many time. I love my tattoo, just would redo the placement.

I am constantly messaging/talking with people about pricing for tattoos and its so funny when they tell me they found someplace cheaper and to cancel their appointment....almost every single time, they end up scheduling for a coverup, which is way more expensive than if they just got the tattoo at our shop to begin with!

I've had people gawk at how much I've paid for one. I paid 30 for a penny sized semi colon. They were like, we paid that for this! Ans they show me something I can't make out where the artist didn't go deep enough and its splotchy. I'm like, yea, you got a great deal. Thumbs up.

I've seen a lot of tattoos using pic of beloved ones as model... 99% of them were not even as "good" as these kids. I think it's this is the worst choice of tattoo if you want to go for cheap. Either you find an artist who know how to do this and it will have a price, either you do not have the money and tattoo their birthdate

Sometimes you should stop. I find that people who have this many tattoos tend to have a mix of beautiful and really poorly-thought-out or just generally ugly ones. If you're going to use most of your body, I much prefer something that works as a complete piece.

The real question is why using this cheap trick to negociate only with artists? My cousin is a professional tattoo artist, he told me that to keep things sterile he's SPENDING something like $50 just to sit down and do a tattoo. That's just in stuff like latex gloves and disposable ink cups and needles and whatnot, plus all the cleaning and disinfecting supplies etc.

During the tattoo was a piece of cake. Took some tylenol about an hour before, didn't mind at all. Day 2-7, had swelling, burning, bruising, regrets... not allergic, just delicate skin. That's the important part my friends didn't tell me!

I really hate that term, tramp stamp. I have a lower back tattoo, it is kanji representing the 'primeval chaos that existed at the beginning of the universe from which all order was created out of'. I did my own research, found the appropriate word, checked with a uni prof on the meaning and correctness of symbol, and put it where my spine had been pierced by a shard of glass during an accident and should have made me a paraplegic but didn't. It is most definitely not trampy OR stampy.

My neighbors daughter was dating a young man who spent most of his time trying to prove how macho he was. One day he comes up to me and says "Check this out" as he removes his shirt and turns around so I can see his latest tattoo...his last name etched across his shoulders. I said "Oh good. A lot of predrawn designs don't get used because people want something specific. Which is great, it just takes extra effort and time and headaches dealing with clients. Using a predrawn means something they've created themselves, their own idea and creation without having to deal with outside influence.

I wanted a penguin sugar skull and gave her a reference. She researched and couldn't find one so I told her to just draw one and we can go from there. Her drawing was awesome and I told her to just color it however she thought would look best on my skin...I now have a fantastic one of a kind penguin sugar skull!!! Mad props to my tat artist!!!

Seems to me there's a lot of talk about not being judgy about people who have tattoos or want tattoos, and how personal it is and you don't have to justify your tattoos to anybody, then it turns out the artist is judging people all over the place. Is a client supposed to get a tattoo that makes the artist happy?

Yup. They get mad when people without tattoos don’t like tattoos yet accept some weird hierarchy when it comes to the tattooed community. Pretty hypocritical. So I can’t think all tattoos look bad on the body but you are allowed to think certain tattoos look bad? Okthen lol

My tattoo is a cross with lilies wrapped around it. There are a lot of designs like that on the Internet, but I loved the original drawing my artist made. I got my tattoo in March and I have received all good compliments on it. I absolutely love my tattoo and I couldn't have asked for a better artist.

I have a "homemade" tattoo on my palm. It is the exact replica of a sharp piece of graphite from a pencil, looking as if I accidentally stabbed a freshly sharpened pencil into my palm when I was 16. Honestly, it's a tattoo, it signifies my deep love of sharp pencils, I totally am not such a klutz that I stabbed myself in the palm with a pencil.

My artist told me he would NOT do palm tats, because the skin sheds so fast (washing, sweating,, use) it would literally disappear.

most artists deny that kind of tattoo, because you can tell people a thousand times that it wont last long, but they're storming into the studio a few weeks later anyway, to tell you how s**t it looks now. When you have not much hard skin in your palm and tattoo it deep enough, it can actually look good (I have one in my palm), but you have to go through a looot of pain for that :D

I make tattoos sometimes. And I think there's nothing wrong with wanting a tattoo you see on Pinterest for example. If it pleases your eyes and makes you happy, who is anyone to say you shouldn't do it? Just because I design and do tattoos doesn't mean my taste level is better than yours.

I was a groomer for many years and I feel bad for the artists who get flack for refusing a job. Yes it was by commission, yes it did affect my reputation, yes word of mouth is a b***h. But if I had a client who had a ridiculous request, I had the right to refuse my professional services. I had to explain too many times why doing a fancy cut on a 4 month old was a bad idea. Its traumatic, it won't look like an adult, and I Know this from Experience.
