While baristas at Starbucks get a bad rep for misspelling people’s names—seemingly quite deliberately—it would be quite unfair to say that they are at fault here.
Some have unique names, others have common names that are spelled differently, and there are also communication barriers, like outside noise that make you mishear things.
Whatever the case, many of us have had our names butchered at some point in our lives, and in some of these cases it turned out hilarious.

So, Twitter user Summer Ray (not to be confused with model Sommer Ray) asked the good people of Twitter to share stories of the grief that people’s names have given them.
She also shared a story about her own name, Sarah, saying that one might think it’s a safe enough name, but on more occasions than she can count she’s sent emails with a sign-off that had her name mischievously corrected to “Satan.”
And you bet people delivered their best responses!

Now, you would expect more out-of-the-ordinary names to be picked on. And there certainly were cases like this in Summer Ray’s thread: names like Fuchsia and Audhan were definitely out there to be ridiculed, whether deliberately or not.
But there were also regular names, like Sarah and Ross, that were quite a head-scratch as to how anyone can butcher them. Well, turns out, Stan and Rock are a thing—spellcheck and phones primarily being the culprit here.

Last name KENTY. I learned from my mom to always say it then spell it. K-E-N-T-Y. Phone rep couldn't understand that after several repetitions. I said "Like Clark Kent with a Y" The package came addressed to Ms. Clarky.

I had a neighbour that knew me from birth and every year Christmas and my birthday, she would always give me a card and sometimes a gift. Anyway every year she would spell my name wrong but not the same way every year. She did a mix between 4 variations over the years and not one of them is the correct spelling lol. Honestly my name is super simple. It's not odd, spelt weird etc. Anyway it was a good giggle, every year trying to guess if she got it right, she would even wait in anticipation. One year, and I mean ONE year she got it right. She was so happy Lol. I didn't care that she got my name wrong. Just thought it was funny.

Because I don't usually go by Nicola, I get every variation of the diminutive version going. My favourite was from a peer of my boss on an office birthday card. His version? Nickkiey. It was all the possible letters and I just had to cross out the ones that didn't apply!

I used to know a Norwegian woman named "Tone," which is apparently pronounced just like "tuna" in Norwegian. She just had people call her tone, as in ring-tone (this is in Canada too). My roommate at the time had a friend (Danish or Norwegian, I can't recall) whose name was pronounced "oo-reen" with the stress on the second syllable. It is spelled "Urine."

Julie Pritt, easiest name in the world, or so I thought. A lifetime of being called Pruitt, Pratt, Print and worst of all Prick. Nobody believes my name is Julie, I am consistently called Julia. My maiden name is Slugg. I got called Ima a lot (not my first name) which then got expanded: Ima Slimey Slug. And all the jokes that came with it. Dated a guy in high school named Mike Testes (seriously), then a guy whose last name was Looney. Also dated a guy whose name was Doug Rocks. I didn't believe him at first. My ex has the last name of Bonesteel, so my kids only got a little less teasing than I did.

Anika. People add an extra n or pronounce it anything that isn’t on-ika. It’s on-ika not Ann-ika. I’ve even Ben pronounced an-eek-a. When greeting someone new, my default greeting is ‘it’s on-ika’. Like once or twice in my life have people pronounced it right first try. When I was a baby, right after a Star Wars movie came out, a doctor called me Anakin.

I get phone calls from people who wanted to call my mother. Once, my mother signed my insurence ID, because she did not check the date of birth.

My last name is Head, so there was no end to "funny" puns and insults, but I learned to get over it pretty early. I did go to University with a woman named Amanda Bedgood, though. That must have been rough for her, and her parents must have been simply oblivious when they named her. During any kind of role-call at the beginning of the semester, she would never pronounce her last name. The prof would say "Amanda...", and she would respond with "B-E-D-G-O-O-D".

XD I'm just staying silent this whole time, because nobody, I mean NOBODY knows how to pronounce or spell my name! Even my friends don't know how to spell my name properly after hearing it. Whenever we got substitute teachers, they'd mispronounce my name. Like, we'd be taking attendance, and a teacher would completely butcher my name. Then I'd correct them, but they'd still mispronounce, lol. My name's a combination of my mom and dad's name (mostly my dad's though. He's very obsessed with his name), so it's not an actual common name, which is why I won't be revealing it, because then it'd be very easy to find my identity. However, I think it's funny how nobody can pronounce it, even though it's spelled in such a way that makes it fairly easy to pronounce, but people just don't understand how to spell (for instance, when you say "caping" it's pronounced cape-ing, but when you say "capping" it's pronounced cap-ing). Like, come on y'all, is it really that hard? xD

married for over 30 yrs (now divorced). it was a running joke between us that if we made it to 20 yrs i would change my name from vance to his which was partipilo. well, when it happened i changed it - not a welcher on deal. but, from that moment, it became a nightmare. my first name stars w/P so i was called PP when people couldn't pronounce it. got mail address to party-pillow and fart-i-pillow. eventually, started telling others 'P as in paul...A..R..T as in tom, P as in paul...I...L...O. still a hot mess with some people. now divorced, court restored my maiden name but some govt bases will not allow the change. kind of like a fungus i can't get rid of. maybe the change jinxed the marriage but we will never know.

My first name is an old family name: Vernice. Pronounced as Ver-nis, emphasis on first syllable. We moved every couple of years. Teased as Vernice the furnace, etc. So, after a move, new school, I changed it to rhyme with Bernice (Ver-niece). One day I introduced myself over the phone to a client from Ireland. He replied "Ah yes, lovely old name" and pronounced it as my parents did, but with the r rolled. So beautiful! Last name Hodgkins. You can imagine the fun with that one. Every time I met someone I would get some version of 'oh, not another one.', or 'is your number 867-5309?' and of course, the inevitable 'run, Forest, run' or other Forest Gump quotes. I am a woman named Tylar (said like Tyler)...my parents thought it would help me throughout my life if people could easily identify that i was female because of the A....but they didn't send that memo to the rest of the world. So many times I'm called "Mr." or my name is misspelled. The worst is when someone calls my name CORRECTLY, but when I stand up they say "Oh sorry Taylor" I'm like...no? Did the letters suddenly leap off the page and rearrange themselves? Or people just won't say my name out of confusion. lol Over the phone I get "Heather" a lot...why? How? Or Tyla or Twyla?? So until recently when I added my middle name I often got mail addressed to Mr. and I still get phones that start “Sir” ... People never spell my first name right. It's Sara. No H. Even if I say "No H", even if I spell it out, even if it's part of the damn email address people are sending the email to, even if the spelled it correctly at the beginning of the message, they still add that damn H. I have wasted many hours of my life having to get paperwork corrected. Then people also enjoy singing songs at me with my name in it and there are several. Plus there are a billion other Sara(h)s out there so when someone calls out your name half the time you're not sure if they are actually talking to you.

Growing up, kids had to work pretty hard to make fun of it (the one who tried the hardest just inserted my name for Hanukkah in a holiday song at were learning at school)... heh, my real last name people mess up all the time, it's probably because it's German originally and was Americanized (note I was born and raised in the US, so was my dad and his dad, but his dad was from Germany).

I had a customer call for a locate. His name was Luke Honey. I told him that I felt weird saying his name. He said he did too. When he has to give his name to a woman they think he is calling them honey. Personally, I'd change my last name, to like Smith or Brown or something. Or even Skywalker.

Rori. I’m a girl (it’s normally a boys’ name) and my name is spelled with an i (rather than Rory). I also have a bit of an accent that makes it difficult for me to pronounce r sounds properly. I have been referred to as Lori, Roy, and, most memorably, War. I love my name but it’s certainly a bit tedious to have to spell it every time I meet someone new.

The cereal came out when I was seven and the fun made could be relentless especially the prank phone calls "Hi, is Count Chocula there?" hang up ... "Hey where's Boo Berry at?" hang up, etc etc. Made my mother soooo freakin' mad and my father got yelled at quite often for saddling her with the name. Its been pronounced Case of course. Theres been some that actually ask if its C Ass. And I've also had a few when spelling it say "C as in cat (then they pause) A S S, right?" A felon with a warrant in another state (that I have never been close to) and I have the same name and birthday. Getting a license renewal is always fun. The information that the name and birthdays are the same is first thing the DMV employee sees. The information that the SSNs are different and the letter from the other state I was forced to get to prove my innocence has to be scrolled to. The result is a hilarious look of panic, darting eyes, and a whimper of "I'm going to need to call my manager."

First name, I had to correct more people than I cared to admit that it was spelled M-I-C-H-E-L-L-E. Yup, 2 L's, 2 E's. Thought that was the more common way to spell it but whatever. Last name, oh boy where do I start? Surname is Breitbach. It was commonly mispronounced as Breitenbach. Otherwise just horribly butchered every way imaginable. Made it easy to spot the telemarketers. Had to spell it VERY clearly over the phone, otherwise the E and I got switched everytime. For the record, it's pronounced Bright-bok, it's German. Married last name, Brandt. A little easier, but while changing the name on a credit card, the CS guy misheard me(somehow) and I got a card with the last name spelled Brandtp. Still scratching my head how that happened.

I had a neighbour that knew me from birth and every year Christmas and my birthday, she would always give me a card and sometimes a gift. Anyway every year she would spell my name wrong but not the same way every year. She did a mix between 4 variations over the years and not one of them is the correct spelling lol. Honestly my name is super simple. It's not odd, spelt weird etc. Anyway it was a good giggle, every year trying to guess if she got it right, she would even wait in anticipation. One year, and I mean ONE year she got it right. She was so happy Lol. I didn't care that she got my name wrong. Just thought it was funny.

Anika. People add an extra n or pronounce it anything that isn’t on-ika. It’s on-ika not Ann-ika. I’ve even Ben pronounced an-eek-a. When greeting someone new, my default greeting is ‘it’s on-ika’. Like once or twice in my life have people pronounced it right first try. When I was a baby, right after a Star Wars movie came out, a doctor called me Anakin.

That must have been rough for her, and her parents must have been simply oblivious when they named her. During any kind of role-call at the beginning of the semester, she would never pronounce her last name. The prof would say "Amanda...", and she would respond with "B-E-D-G-O-O-D".

XD I'm just staying silent this whole time, because nobody, I mean NOBODY knows how to pronounce or spell my name! Even my friends don't know how to spell my name properly after hearing it. Whenever we got substitute teachers, they'd mispronounce my name. Like, we'd be taking attendance, and a teacher would completely butcher my name. Then I'd correct them, but they'd still mispronounce, lol. My name's a combination of my mom and dad's name (mostly my dad's though. He's very obsessed with his name), so it's not an actual common name, which is why I won't be revealing it, because then it'd be very easy to find my identity. However, I think it's funny how nobody can pronounce it, even though it's spelled in such a way that makes it fairly easy to pronounce, but people just don't understand how to spell (for instance, when you say "caping" it's pronounced cape-ing, but when you say "capping" it's pronounced cap-ing). Like, come on y'all, is it really that hard? xD

married for over 30 yrs (now divorced). it was a running joke between us that if we made it to 20 yrs i would change my name from vance to his which was partipilo. well, when it happened i changed it - not a welcher on deal. but, from that moment, it became a nightmare. my first name stars w/P so i was called PP when people couldn't pronounce it. got mail address to party-pillow and fart-i-pillow. eventually, started telling others 'P as in paul...A..R..T as in tom, P as in paul...I...L...O. still a hot mess with some people. now divorced, court restored my maiden name but some govt bases will not allow the change. kind of like a fungus i can't get rid of. maybe the change jinxed the marriage but we will never know.

Teased as Vernice the furnace, etc. So, after a move, new school, I changed it to rhyme with Bernice (Ver-niece). One day I introduced myself over the phone to a client from Ireland. Having a common name isn't fun, either. My first name is Jennifer and I grew up in the '80s. Every time I met someone I would get some version of 'oh, not another one.', or 'is your number 867-5309?' and of course, the inevitable 'run, Forest, run' or other Forest Gump quotes. I'm a woman, my surname is a traditionally male first name, think Robert for example, on many occasions when I have been admitted to hospital I have been taken to the male section of the ward, then they have to leave me out in the corridor while they try and find me a bed in the female bit.

I am a woman named Tylar (said like Tyler)...my parents thought it would help me throughout my life if people could easily identify that i was female because of the A....but they didn't send that memo to the rest of the world. So many times I'm called "Mr." or my name is misspelled. The worst is when someone calls my name CORRECTLY, but when I stand up they say "Oh sorry Taylor" I'm like...no? Did the letters suddenly leap off the page and rearrange themselves? Or people just won't say my name out of confusion. lol Over the phone I get "Heather" a lot...why? How? Or Tyla or Twyla?? A lot of times i think to myself.....do people named Skylar have this problem? My given name is simple Tracy. In the North it’s a girls name, in the south it’s also a mans name. So until recently when I added my middle name I often got mail addressed to Mr. and I still get phones that start “Sir” ... (and don’t get me started on the butchering of a simple name when being asked for or addressed, Terry, Stacy, only once, Helen.

People never spell my first name right. It's Sara. No H. Even if I say "No H", even if I spell it out, even if it's part of the damn email address people are sending the email to, even if the spelled it correctly at the beginning of the message, they still add that damn H. I have wasted many hours of my life having to get paperwork corrected. Then people also enjoy singing songs at me with my name in it and there are several. Plus there are a billion other Sara(h)s out there so when someone calls out your name half the time you're not sure if they are actually talking to you.

I know someone with the same problem, but the rest of us are just used to the convention that Sarah is pronounced to rhyme with 'fairer' and Sara to rhyme with 'Tara'. At least that's the way it is in the UK.

Growing up, kids had to work pretty hard to make fun of it (the one who tried the hardest just inserted my name for Hanukkah in a holiday song at were learning at school)... I have been referred to as Lori, Roy, and, most memorably, War. I love my name but it’s certainly a bit tedious to have to spell it every time I meet someone new.

A felon with a warrant in another state (that I have never been close to) and I have the same name and birthday. Getting a license renewal is always fun. The information that the name and birthdays are the same is first thing the DMV employee sees. The information that the SSNs are different and the letter from the other state I was forced to get to prove my innocence has to be scrolled to. The result is a hilarious look of panic, darting eyes, and a whimper of "I'm going to need to call my manager."

First name, I had to correct more people than I cared to admit that it was spelled M-I-C-H-E-L-L-E. Yup, 2 L's, 2 E's. Thought that was the more common way to spell it but whatever. Last name, oh boy where do I start? Surname is Breitbach. It was commonly mispronounced as Breitenbach. Otherwise just horribly butchered every way imaginable. Made it easy to spot the telemarketers. Had to spell it VERY clearly over the phone, otherwise the E and I got switched everytime. For the record, it's pronounced Bright-bok, it's German. Married last name, Brandt. A little easier, but while changing the name on a credit card, the CS guy misheard me(somehow) and I got a card with the last name spelled Brandtp. Still scratching my head how that happened.
