Not everyone was born Steve Jobs. In a world ruled by technology and social media, many people find themselves struggling to keep up with increasingly elaborate electronics. The elderly are taking tips from their “tech-savvy kids,” and our moms are figuring out how to upload Instagram stories, which is both a bless… I mean, a curse, really.

But hey, who am I to judge when there are still some people who are so clueless about seemingly basic tech things like chargers, ad blockers, and electric kettles? Bored Panda has compiled a painfully cringy list of some of the most absurd fails in the land of electronics that will make tech ed classics great again.

After you're done reading this post, be sure to check out our previous lists with the worst software fails, older people struggling with technology, and tech support people sharing the nightmare fails they've encountered.

I think he might’ve been trying to print something in the video. It says it’s “tabs”, might’ve basically been sheet music at the point it’s paused.

With so many people still struggling with technology and electronics that have all become part of our daily lives in recent decades, we can’t help but wonder what went wrong. Should we blame technology education classes nobody looked at seriously? Or is it really a lack of patience when it comes to learning new things? Maybe society itself has left out the older generation, which has become separated due to its failure to employ new technological modes of communication and life?

Experts have many reasons for the phenomenon, but most agree that by creating innovation and pushing tech to its very potential, we have created new problems on the way. For example, Larry Masinter, an internet pioneer, said: “Technology and social innovation intended to overcome the negatives of the digital age will likely cause additional negative consequences. Examples include: the decentralized web, end-to-end encryption, AI and machine learning, social media.”

Meanwhile, Peter Lunenfeld, a professor of design, media arts, and digital humanities at the University of California, Los Angeles, predicts that solutions to these newly emerged problems will create new issues, and we may end up in a vicious loop. “We will use technology to solve the problems the use of technology creates, but the new fixes will bring new issues,” he stated.

I have a hard drive fan that I kept as a trophy after removing it from a PC that was also located next to a portable heater. The blades of the fan are melted and fused to the frame. The worker had requested a new tower because hers kept shutting down all the time. Even more worrying was the heater had a broken foot so she'd used a can of compressed air (with tape to hold it in place) to prop it up. When I answered the ticket and went to inspect the problem the heater was on and that can was too hot to touch.

According to the chief technology officer of RAD Data Communications, Yaakov J. Stein, the problem lays in our total dependence on the tech world. “The problem is that we are becoming more and more dependent on machines and hence more susceptible to bugs and system failures.”

There are other things inherently flawed in technological advancements, and it has to do with concerning amounts of their exploitation for the wrong purposes. According to a Pew Research report, “Numerous experts described misinformation and fake news as a serious issue in digital spaces. They expressed concern over how users will sort through fact and fiction in the coming decade.”

Yet, many experts believe that it's simply too late to take a step back in the tech world. Our lives have changed beyond recognition thanks to the internet and technology, in many ways for the better. It has made our time more efficient, our jobs more productive, our lives somewhat easier and more intuitive. And in accepting its good features, we may well have to accept its flaws.

Omg, I've dealt with those people. I had a old lady complain that her DVD burner wasn't recording in color. And she installed a lot of lights so there should be color. And it won't play DVDs so she wants a DVD player. Her grandson hooked it all up. Fished a naked DVD out of her purse. Couldn't understand that she must have bought black and white only cameras, no color info to be recorded. And her grandson either didn't plug the DVD burner into the TV input or she didn't change the input correctly. She should ask her grandson to help. She asked to talk to a boy... Who then sold her a $100 DVD player she didn't need...

Karen is the name that my parents thought about long and hard before naming me. They thought it was beautiful. I do not call managers, I do not call the police randomly on innocent people simply birdwatching or sitting on a bench. But god forbid I buy something defective and try to bring it back to a store. The harassment I'm subjected to because I need to return something is unbelievable.

I always find it so bizarre that so many Americans use stove top kettles when electric kettles are much more convenient. I'm British and can't imagine using anything other than an electric kettle! Coffee, tea, hot chocolate in an instant.

Its because america has a lower voltage, so electric kettles take way longer than stovetop.

I'm in the USA and I have an electric kettle that boils water in 2-3 minutes. Way quicker than the stove.

What a nice shape. No wonder they confused it with a stove top one. Most of ours look more like a pitcher. You can't really confuse those. Plus: We always had one at home. It's easier not to confuse something you knew all your life.

My tea kettle boils water in about 4 or 5 minutes on an electric range. I don't know how much faster an electric tea kettle is but I'm not in that big of a hurry that I'm gonna go buy a whole separate space taking appliance just to gain a few minutes. It sounds like these people would have anxiety attacks waiting for their tea to steep.

It's about two or three minutes. As someone who let a pan of water boil dry when distracted by something more important I rather like a kettle as they switch themselves off. Honestly, personal preference, available space - each to their own.

If he has a young kid who doesn't have her own phone, it's not crazy to suspect she might've used it if some things seem off. That's why he installed the app: to see if he was correct or incorrect. Don't say "radical thought" as if he should've known immediately. That's why he ran the test: so he could know whether his daughter should be in trouble or not.

OMG I've done this! Was contracted for one day cover work. First lesson was covering a HE group as their lecturer was sick. My notes were litereally "they are in the middle of a project, just tell them to get on with it". I went in, relayed the message. Asked if anyone needed any help or had any questions. No one did. I sat in silence for 30 minutes ready to help if needed. They TRUELY didn't need me, they were all great kids and working away fine alone. Totaly bord I decided to brows the net. Now I had NEVER been in this class before and my desk was set up so my back was to the GIANT SCREEN behind me. After about AN HOUR AND A HALF of net browsing, one of the students finally needed help. I get up to go over. Answer their question. Feeling great about myself that I could help I turned to go back to my desk, to see my computer screen PLASTERED FEET HIGH across the wall. Oh my god, I nearly died. Thank christ all I'd done was read the news and brows Panda!!!

One of the best thing that ever happened to us in a class was when our anatomy teacher wanted to pull up a picture of an amoeba. He hadn't actually Googled this beforehand and pulled up the image results. Several of the top results were of some chippendale/porn star. You can imagine the reaction of a high school class!! Our teacher just sighed and was like "Ok, OK! Apparently there's some muscle head who wants to show off HIS anatomy under the name amoeba. .....and that's pretty sad, actually. How do you expect to make a living at that as Amoeba? This is why you should stay in school, guys. Otherwise, you'll end up being some naked geek in front of a high school science class."

To be honest, dead ones would be kinder. A lot of (duck) feathers now come from China, where they practice live plucking (more "crops" per bird). I just can't bring myself to buy feather anything any more. 😥

Customer Brought In This iMac For Not Powering On. This Is How He Apparently Uses It

For further context: I'm 99% sure the customer has been running his iMac with the shipping plastic in place since 2015, including on the bottom covering the vents, as there's airflow patterns of dust and certain areas where the plastic has melted/deformed; note the scotch tape ON the plastic covering the camera.
EDIT: Just called the customer and asked/confirmed the plastic has been in place; "I guess that's why I hear the fans ramp up!" And he wants to keep the plastic in place, lol. But I got him to agree to at least let me clip the bottom portion so it no longer wraps around the vents.

Products like these should come with a warning stuck on the screen. This can happen to anyone as evidenced by MKBHD and other tech youtubers pealing off what they thought was a protective film on a Samsung fold device... killed the device

When you see a transparent layer on a new screen and you can peel it, it means it is supposed to be. This mistake is justified, the people who sold it are the ones to be blamed.

Seller has no fault, it's who manifacures it the problem, they should make not-supposed-to-be-removed films built in and not on the surface where they will be mistaken for protective and removable plastic

That’s awful! I would be so angry that it was able to peel since usually it’s the other way around - there’s a film to peel off and people mistakenly leave it there unknowingly.

Yes, it does. I had one like this (different model, a Sony Xperia) when I was in middle school. The screen and all the electronics could be removes from the back shell (which contained the antenna, so it was offline, but it worked).

As to why this isn't a feature on phones:1. you'd add a lot of bulk with the hinges. 2. More moving parts = more places to break or dust to get in (Galaxy Fold). 3. Screens are flimsy and can snap easily.

Speaking as a product designer, you're the idiot. That tab should have been removed by whomever INSTALLED the new thermostat (it's there to keep the mechanism from slamming back and forth during shipping). This proves that they didn't even check that their installation worked before they left!

network cables have that little clip to keep the wire in place. The clip can easily break off and then the cable will not stay in place (very annoying, as it interrupts your internet-connection). So someone pinned the cable to the table, so it doesn't fall out - without recognizing it would destroy the cable ;)

An art-project I did in school: I filled a squirting-gun with acetone and let it melt down and resolidify. Looked pretty cool, but it broke into a lot of pieces when it fell down later. It was like a coloured ... a cow's poop comes to mind, only hardly resembling the pistol-shape anyomre, in bright yellow and purple with a few orange spots - I loved it, my teacher thought I was kidding him, I don't remember my grade.

The biggest problem with water and electric devices is water and RUNNING electric devices. Because water is conductive, water droplets can connect parts of the circuits that were never intended to be connected, i.e. cause shortcuts. You know how wires can be connected badly in a house and it's not a problem - until you turn on the light or plug something in and it trips the fuse? FLOWING electricity. Just make sure to give the USB stick plenty plenty of time to dry before plugging it in.

It's an Eltron 2844 label printer. The gap-sensor comes unglued and the printer can't detect the gap between labels so it keeps feeding blank ones essentially forever. Turning it upside down gets gravity to put the sensor back in place. It's not too hard to repair, you just have to find someone to do it.

Vacuum cleaner should pick most of the bits up pretty quickly. Use low power though. You don't want to suck the keys up.

no, use compressed air. That way you won't suck the keys and you can get into little cracks.

Pre-chromecast, my husband couldn't figure out how to turn the TV to the cable (input button). Instead he unplugged everything and plugged it all back in... BACKWARDS. Didn't say a word about it. I spent hours trying to change my computer settings to get it to show up on the TV. I got really mad, complained about it for 10 minutes, still didn't say a word. After a few attempts over a few days, I pulled out the TV. Computer plugged into the output... Asked hubs if he messed with stuff or we should be worried about a prankster intruder and he finally fessed up. Face palm.

In my family, only the females can touch electronics. Our husbands get too frustrated and decide the instructions are either wrong or make no sense. My favorite "repair" has happened more times than I can count, I just touch the computer/TV/whatever and it starts to work. I have no idea what happened but I do enjoy the praise.

Wax does not peel off easily. It's a much more inconvenient texture, too soft and too sticky at the same time, too friable to peel, not enough scrape. My grandmoter spilled wax on our brand new granite worktop, which is the easiest surface to clean, and it was a really long chore.

The cover could tear. Unfortunate, messy and a PITA to clean up, but it's an accident and not stupidity or clumsiness .

Clean the filters as soon as possible as there is a fire risk if they are clogged with something flammable such as foam.

I did something similar, albeit nowhere near as bad, to my Dell desktop computer, when I put an IKEA desk lamp over the top because I used to use the PC at night and I didn't want to put on the main light and be caught. Not sure why I hooked it over the computer screen.

Probably pulling a rolling suitcase through an airport with the laptop tote supposedly on top, but it shifted and dragged on the floor from gate B-3 to X-47.

my phone has been able to survive being dropped and stepped on several times. it's a moto g4. it just has a couple dents on the casing. i don't even use a phone case because it is old and too small for one. my brother has an iphone (not sure what model) and he has dropped it and stepped on it. it's screen is super cracked. he uses a phone case, and the screen was perfect when he got it. he has had it less time than i have had mine. Iphones are flimsy and not as good quality as motorola. i rest my case.

I call BS. The worst that can happen is that the plug or the cable of the headphone break. I worked in a primary school and students would often walk away from pc's with their headphones on. It never happened that the pc fell on the ground. Broken headphones and crying children? Yes! Pc's come crashing to the ground? Never!

They didn't call the phone for the scene, they just opened a screenshot of an incoming call. At the top of the screen, you can see multiple icons, those are visible when you open an image. If someone calls you, they're not visible

Why do comments get hidden on bored panda? I never understood that. Do you have to intentionally hide it or does BP do it to certain ones? Also, I hate when I get the "you are commenting to fast, please slow down with the comments" message. Like really, be happy people are commenting on these posts. Don't tell us to slow down 😆
