Some folks hate squirrels. Yeah. They consider them pests, much like opossums or moles. They call them "big rats with fluffy tails." Sure, they might steal a few seeds from the bird feeder or chew a few wires, but these animals definitely should get more love.

Squirrels are extremely intelligent. For example, they are known to put on elaborate bogus food burying displays to deceive onlookers, and the fake burials trick thieves -- such as other squirrels or birds -- into thinking that they have stored their food stock there. But they're also really adorable. But it doesn't matter whether they're having a snack or simply running up and down a tree, squirrels make everything they do look cute and silly too.

Bored Panda put together some of the best squirrel posts on the Internet to help you to appreciate these furry forest ambassadors, so scroll down, enjoy the pics, and upvote your faves.

So cute! Myself, I had a blackbird nest by the side of my balcony this spring, but it was quite hidden in the thicket of wisteria and therefore difficult to observe... still, you could sneak a peek if you positioned yourself just right :) The little ones fledged a few weeks ago.

Squirrels come in a lot of sizes, from the African pygmy squirrel and least pygmy squirrel at 10–14 cm (3.9–5.5 in) in total length and just 12–26 g (0.42–0.92 oz) in weight, to the Bhutan giant flying squirrel at up to 1.27 m (4 ft 2 in) in total length, and several marmot species, which can weigh 8 kg (18 lb) or more.

Tree squirrels are the types most commonly recognized, often pictured and recorded gracefully scampering up and leaping from branch to branch. They can be seen everywhere from woodlands to city parks, but although they are terrific climbers, these squirrels do come to the ground in search of nuts, acorns, berries, and flowers. They also eat bark, eggs, or baby birds. But to some of them, tree sap is the delicacy.

Other species are ground squirrels -- they live in burrows or tunnels, where some hibernate during the winter season. These guys eat nuts, leaves, roots, seeds, and other plants. They also catch and eat small animals such as insects and caterpillars. However, these tiny mammals have to be wary, as they themselves are tasty morsels for a lot of animals and have very few natural defenses.

Flying squirrels are a third type of squirrel. They live a bit like birds, in nests or tree holes. And even though they do not fly, they can move across the sky really gracefully. Flying squirrels glide, extending their arms and legs and cruising through the air from one tree to another. Flaps of skin connecting their limbs to the body provide a winglike surface, which help them to leap over 150 feet. Flying squirrels aren't picky eaters and eat nuts and fruit, insects and baby birds.

Like other rodents, squirrels' front teeth never stop growing so they don't have to worry about constantly crunching on something.

We're not allowed to feed squirrels in the park, but my boyfriend and I would do it anyway. One cheeky fellow climbed up my leg and onto my chest, asking for the unshelled almond in my hand. I gave it to him, and he scampered down my leg. That was a good day.

Hey just so you know there is probably a reason feeding the squirrels isn't allowed! It will ruin their natural instincts to feed themselves and the diet that they are supposed to have. I know it's fun to feed them but it's harming the squirrels when you do.

I had a squirrel friend that had a lame front paw so she was easy to spot. Ilean was about one year old when we met and we were friends for three years...I'm retired so we were able to visit a minimum of two times a day. She would call for me, if my bedroom window was open she would sit on the sill and for the last year of her life she would use our dog door and come into the kitchen. Ilean was smart she learned tricks, I amazed people that I could call her and she would come down out of her tree sit on my shoulder. She has been gone for three years now and I am still not over her. Ilean-on-s...22597c.jpg Ilean-on-step-5f076e522597c.jpg

I Noticed There Were A Few Squirrels In A Tree And They Were Going Crazy

I Noticed There Were A Few Squirrels In A Tree And They Were Going Crazy

After I climbed about 20 feet up a tree I noticed that they weren't fighting. They were stuck. THEY WERE ATTACHED AT THE TAIL. So I kept climbing and got these little guys into my bucket. I brought them back to the ground to try to figure out what I was going to do.
It may be hard to tell, but there are three squirrels buried in there. It seems that they made a nest out of insulation and dryer lint in a pine tree, and the sap kind of glued it to them, and them to each other.
I started pulling some of the insulation off, but it was a slow process because the sap from the tree was so thick it was pulling the hair from their little tails.
Believe it or not, they were really calm throughout the whole process. I used some warm water and scissors to help get the majority of the sap loose and the insulation off. The last squirrel was a total bro and let me take a few pictures with him.

Sometimes maybe. I think many animals respond to predators (us) by becoming as still as possible. Others fight. There is one man who lost both his eyes to a gannet when he tried to rescue it from plastic packaging. That was a crappy reward for a kind man.

They aren't landing on the ground. They are scratching for fleas. I've had three pet squirrels, and every one of them was simply Loaded with fleas. Getting rid of them was the first thing I had to do. Incidentally, they make great pets,.........until it is time to procreate, and then they want leave and do their thing.

At that age they are still too young to be on their own... they're incapable of fencing for themselves, so they seek protection. Another week at least, better 2, and they can be gradually released.

They are not tree rats. The way this comes about is when something hurts or kills the Mom or destroys the nest and she will come for them as soon as she is able to provide. Our one we named Chickory. (coffee colored)was fun and wonderful.

Scoutmac22, That's funny as can be, but that looks like a Public Street Sign pole, like for a Yield or Stop Sign. You should ask the City to come pull it up and empty it, allowing the Squirrel to have it's Winter stash back to hide somewhere else, but then to cover the top of the pole with a metal cap. Otherwise, the little guy might not make the Winter.

Little Thumbelina Is An Eastern Grey Squirrel, Who Was Born On A Frigid March Morning

Little Thumbelina Is An Eastern Grey Squirrel, Who Was Born On A Frigid March Morning

Her Momma's nest was destroyed due to nearby construction, and in a desperate attempt to keep her family safe, she crawled into a 10th story window and gave birth two tiny babies on a stranger's bed, while he was away at work. When the apartment owner arrived home, he was surprised to find two tiny pink babies resting under his pillow, amongst some dried pine needs and branches .
Although we tried for hours to reunite the babies with their Mom, she refused to take them back out into the wild with her. After some time, Mom decided she could no longer return, and the two little sisters were adopted by local wildlife rehabbers . Although, sadly one sister passed just a few hours later, tiny pink Thumbelina got a second chance to begin her new little life.

Be very, very careful not to feed squirrels too many almonds as they contain cyanide (deadly) and squirrels can't process it very fast. Over the winter I started to feed my backyard squirrels and read that almonds should only be an occasional treat. They love peanuts!

She has been gone for three years now and I am still not over her. last-squir...4bcc02.jpg last-squirrel-5f0771c4bcc02.jpg

I feel your pain Dolly and like you I miss my little buddies. I don't exactly know how any rescues I did, I know it was at least 30. A tree cutter also heard of me and when he would come across babies, I'd get a call. One time I had 6 little ones, three different batches. Ha! The first few rescues I got it was hard for me to let them go. When they were old enough I'd take them outside, several times a day so they would learn the outdoors. After seeing how much fun they had running in the trees and learning to jump tree to tree it was easy to let go. when they played it was halirous!! A few squirrels did hang around or come visit. One female stayed awhile and had two liters up in the rafters of our porch. I thoroughly enjoyed the Squirrels and would gladly do it again if i rum across one that needs help. Got a lot of good memories.

Wow! I can think of hree possible explanations: 1) Color gene is on the X chromosome, and this is a female with X chromosomes coding for different fur color, 2) there was a mutation very, very early in this squirrels life that messed up the color gene, 3) two of the fertilized egg cells in the mother fused early in the development.

It is called piebald, you can see it in lots of animals: horses, snakes, dogs. From wikipedia: Location of the unpigmented spots is dependent on the migration of melanoblasts (primordial pigment cells) from the neural crest to paired bilateral locations in the skin of the early embryo.

For all we know they may be siblings: the white one has black eyes, therefore is not albino but a leucistic squirrel, and the black one is a melanistic squirrel... both are genetically grey squirrels.. It's no different than you and a brother having hair of a different color. ;)

We have a squirrel who likes to put nuts in the driveway, likely so that when the car comes in, it'll run over the nuts and crush them/crack the shells open. Smart solution, if you ask me.

There's a squirrel(s) I feed peanuts and he drives my cats nuts, but they go insane if the patio door is open and it climbs the screen.

In Houston, my friend's Frenchie would just go crazy chasing a squirrel. One day the squirrel ran to a tree with a branch that stretched across the street. When a car came, the squirrel ran across that branch and the dog ran in front of the car. Fortunately, the car stopped without hitting "Shea" and I could just imagine the squirrel laughing about how it almost killed that pesky dog.

He is very tame and as you can see is really cute. They call him Yochen (he is a German squirrel so an "eichhörnchen").

I have a very lively garden there were actually 4 squirrels this morning but one kept running of and they were chasing each other. the kids no longer use this mud kitchen so the sink gets filled with nuts daily what with the daily visits the squirrels there are also a wood pigeon couple, magpie couple, a jay couple oh and a friendly seagull who bangs on the oven door to tell me he wants bread :) and at night we have a hedgehog but he has his own food and water. squirells-...e8ae21.jpg squirells-5f0c000e8ae21.jpg

We tried so hard to get it to drink, and it wanted to swallow so bad, but its little organs had started failing already - it couldn't move, barely could blink. Needless to say, baby bunny didn't make it. :(

That and the white-and-brown one a few posts over seem to indicate some form of domestication. White spots or even white fur all over would normally be a beacon for predators, but when there's not much danger, the white can spread among the population. It might even be helpful, as humans would probably be more kind towards animals tehy can easily recognize, so that would speed up the colour-change in the species.

Aww. The grey ones tend to be very tame and ask for food, the red ones are shyer (at least in the UK)
