19 New Comics By Vernessa Himmler That Cat Owners Might Find Very Relatable
Interview With Artist"Cats have the appeal of resembling stuffed animals but ask any cat owner what it's like to own one of these adorable creatures, and they will tell you the reality is not always so cuddly." That's how Vernessa Himmler, an illustrator based in Hamburg, Germany, describes life with beloved little devils and we couldn't say it better.
Living with two cats, Mikosch and Koschka, Vernessa decided to create fun comics showing the crazy side of being a "silly cat owner". The artist has been drawing since childhood and received a master's degree in illustration from HAW Hamburg. Over the years she has developed her own modern style and has created plenty of bright illustrations.
In the fun cat comics, the artist portrays her daily life as a "crazy cat lady" and the weird and funny moments with her two fluffy pets. We believe that a lot of the situations depicted in the drawings might be very familiar to all the cat owners out there. Are we right?

My mother always said "The next cat we get is going to be NAVY BLUE!"
At this point I'm at "The next cat we get is going to be HAIRLESS!!!"
Load More Replies...It doesn't matter what color cats I have. All balls of cat fur I find around the house are gray even if I only have one white cat, one black cat or one orange cat.
Bored Panda reached out to Vernessa to learn more about her creative process. The artist shared with us that it takes around one hour for her to fully finish a comic. She admitted that it can be quite challenging to come up with an idea for an illustration. "The gag must fit into the four panels and shouldn’t be too complicated but relatable for the followers."
This is totally unrealistic! The cat is puking on the floor - not on the couch, the rug or in a colourful rainbow down from the highest post they could find? I don't believe that for one second...
I have a chair that is trashed but when I mentioned throwing it out my 9yr old said "That is a 1 of a kind Gracie design' so I kept it
Friend has a big house full of cats. At any given point in the day (or night), one will be crapping, one will be puking and one will be hacking up a hairball. If you are lucky it won't be anywhere where you are going to put your feet. LOL.
Does she not have adequate litter boxes, diet or hairball control treatments for them? That sounds like a neglect situation. I have 3 cats. We never have accidents on the floors, they virtually never puke, and hairballs are few and far between because we make sure they have easy access to clean litterboxes, they have diets appropriate to their health and age, and they get prophylactic hairball gel to make them easier to pass without herking them up on the carpet.
Load More Replies...I have a theory that they head for carpet because it feels good on their feet and they're looking for any comfort they can find at that moment of extreme nausea.
...and they like to claw into it while inching backwards with each heave...
Load More Replies...That unique sound (cat owners know which sound I’m talking about) will instantly wake you up from a sleep so deep it’s next door to dead. You will spring up out of bed totally bug-eyed like you’ve had too much caffeine, and in a panic. You will frantically try to locate the cat, and hope beyond hope you get there in time to get them off the rug and on the bare floor, because it’s soooo much easier to clean it up after they’re finally done. Also to get there before the dog decides to eat it (yeah, not the mental picture you want, but reality).
Every time I hear that horking sound, I run like this. My cat could vomit on easily washable lino, but always goes over to the living room to do it on the carpet. Cats are nature's ultimate trolls.
I've woken up from a dream because I've heard that sound. It's an automatic alarm clock. cat-alarm-...9c05d8.jpg
my asshole cat ALWAYS goes under the bed to puke. every damn time, and its such a pain in the ass to move the bed to clean it up e_e
We found a solution for this! Just put something under the bed like an old sheet or newspapers or those absorbant placemat kind of things. If your cat pukes he will puke on top of it and you can easily pull it out from under the bed and wash it/throw it away.

The areas she prefers to work in are informative illustration, non-fiction illustration and editorial illustration. The artist describes her drawing style as versatile - made up of realistic, fine drawings and modern coloring.
Vernessa shared that she loves to create things with her imagination and to make people smile with little comics about real-life problems.
Ehh, I love cats, and have had cats and dogs in my life since I can remember—-I now have three, used to be four but our 19 year old cat, Baz, who we adopted at 9 weeks old died this past summer (Miss You So Much Bazzy!)—-but I draw the line at the majority of cat-themed stuff, and prefer to choose my own. It has to be unique and appeal to ME, and most of it doesn’t come close to either.
my grandma: close your mouth or a fly will fly in and get stuck in there
According to the artist, all situations in these short comics are based on true events. "Sometimes I exaggerate the situations, so it gets funnier."
However, Vernessa's art collection not only consists of black and white cat comics but colorful and vivid illustrations of people and animals as well. If you're interested in seeing more of her artworks, you can check out Vernessa's Instagram page as well as her website.
We do this with my cat a lot. He spreads all his toes out wide when we do it, so my husband yells NAAAA SAAAWENYAAAA MY TOES ARE SPREADOUT 😹 Makes me laugh every time.
hahahhahahahhahahahhahahahahahhahahahhahahha😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹
Load More Replies...My aunt used to do this with my black cat but she’d yell “sacrifice” when she held her up like she was in some kind of ritual. Ha
I have a 5 month old blue nose girl.. we've been doing this far too often since we got her at 2 weeks.
I save the fur, twist it into a thick yarn when I have enough, and then make cat toys out of cat fur. Bizarrely, other people's cats really love them.
Why didn't I think of this? Mora's getting a mohawk next time brushies happen
Vernessa's works have been featured on Bored Panda before and the artist got a lot of your positive reactions and comments. If you want to look at the previous illustrations, you can do that by clicking here and here for more uplifting comics by Vernessa.
Do your cats seem to expand during the night? Mine apparently do, and I usually end up with about 6 inches at the edge to try to sleep in, or only the top half of the bed, so have to sleep at an angle or all scrunched up.
Load More Replies...I’m laying diagonally as we speak because of this very reason
Same and have been for about 2 hours now. But starting at the middle of the bed so I'm also scrunched on an angle.
Load More Replies...My hubby: "Where am I supposed to sleep?!" Me and the cats: "We left you room." (Sort of...)
OMG! The girl in the comic strip only has 2 cats.. I have 3. One HAS to sleep in between my legs, one sleeps on my pillow and one is nestled under my arm pit. I wake up with leg, shoulder, and neck cramps almost every morning.
My cats won't cuddle with me right now as I want them to. I go to sleep freezing and wake up boiling. Each of my cats has their preferred spots. CoffeeCake on my left. Rascal on my tummy, chest or btwn my legs. Sometimes I wake up with her staring me awake. Smokey on my right. They keep me pinned down in my bed. Followed by making me feel bad when I have to head to the bathroom.
Load More Replies...Um, replace “you don’t need to” with “that are way too dangerous”, and you’ve nailed the truth.
My cat looks at me when she scratches out of retaliation for not getting whatever it is that she wants at the moment…she KNOWS it pisses me off. 😒
I have a cat tree next to the window. The cats have broken 5 slates on blind right at the highest sleeping spot so the can look outside without moving and also sleep in a sunbeam at the right time of day
My two cats fight over any box that comes into the house. I've got a very chonky cat and a very skinny cat. Sometimes I think I can see the complicated geometry going on in chonkys head to see if she'll fit herself in that tiny space.
The youngest of my cats, Tabby, was abandoned alone in our yard at about 5-6 weeks old and not even weighing a pound yet. She practically lived on my neck and shoulder the first two weeks after we finally found her and adopted her. She’ll be two years old in April, and still thinks I’m her Mama Cat. Cats show affection through grooming each other, so she tends to “groom” me on my hair or any exposed skin, especially before dawn. Not as noisy, but just as effective, as the yowling or sitting on you. Besides, she’s still tiny, barely seven pounds, so I’d never notice her sitting on me,
My kitty turns the bedside lamp on and off (it's a flat button), climbs the headboard and jumps onto some random body part, or climbs the curtain to wake us in am for food. I wish she'd just meow.
This is my life while trying to cut back food to make Junior less chonky! I bought ear plugs. 😆
I feel you. Mine are all four at once some days. *sigh*
Load More Replies...Our fat cat, Schrodinger, is the bully. Our other cat just sits outside the box we feed them in and waits. ;(
the "well behaved cats" is only once a month for me The bully is 24/7
One of my cats will follow me after I've fed them and will only eat after I've sat down and the other thinks my sole purpose is to provide food
what about the switch-a-roo? when they start out in their own bowls but end up in someone else's?
One time, our Rosie said "I love you" as clear as day, and as the silly hooman, I made a huge deal of it. My husband (and our Rosie, come to think of it) seemed rather nonplussed about the whole event, but I knew that she really meant it, even if she didn't right then. 😉😊
Lot of my cats I pick them up they hug me go prrrr prrrr prrrr. Try to put them down they're velcro cats. PS my dogs are too big to pick up
My cats love that I am working from home at the moment - they are visibly upset whenever I but on shoes in order to leave for grocery shopping...
My husband took my house plant to work because our cat chewed on it and it is poisonous. When he started working from home, the plant came with him, and now lives in a cage.
I was smart and got fake plants. Then they chewed on those. I am not smart
For an obligate carnivore, my black cat wants to eat wheat grass *every flipping day*. I asked the veterinarian, who said, "Her poop and bloodwork look great, let her eat it." So now I'm the weirdo who grows wheat grass... for my cat...
there's a picture where a woman is asking "What kind of creature eats just the tips of plants?" in reference to the tips of her aloe vera being bitten off. The next picture has her cat caught in the act doing it further and the caption "Never mind."
Ya, check their hiney and sleeping areas for worm segments and eggs. Or they could have an infected a**l gland or some other issue, so get it checked out. Shame on the person who downvoted you!
Load More Replies...Mine always do it on the white carpet in the hallway when they get a bit of poo stuck. Also called the cat puke carpet.
Thats cause it's a white carpet. Those are the best to ruin and you know your cat knows how best to irk you
Load More Replies...Mine don't care about ours. IT's just a new thing to hide under. No care for climbing it. Then again, they have umpteen other things to climb!
Load More Replies...You people do realize cats can be trained, right? I have two and they don't do any of this stuff.
My cat never tried to climb the Christmas tree, or knock any ornaments off. He did love sleeping under the tree though.
Never had a cat do that. Mine always declared the tree skirt their new bed, and just liked to be under it. 'cept Pete; who just wanted to eat glass.
My cat has learned to leave the tree alone after a particularly bad fall.
Once when the christmas was over and we were right about to get the tree off, the cat knew it, he knew it! He ran as fast as he could to the tree, the tree dramaticly fell on the ground, ok it was helpful, but IMAGINE THE MESS - ALL THE BALLS (half) WERE BROKEN IN LIL PEACES!
Don’t understand someone please explain (edit) thank you for explaining
It's a little bit confusing without context. A few years ago I worked on my master degree: an illustrated book about cats. So I illustrated more than 100 cat breeds. This was very exhausting. If you visit my IG or FB you’ll see some pics of my book and cats illustrations. 🤗
Load More Replies...That's to many you have the fluff ball, scrunch face, gremlin, meowmix, and the chonkzilla(maincoone)
I wonder if the artist illustrated a snowshoe cat. They aren't very popular. She half Siamese half domestic. Has blue eyes, white boots and white on the face, rest looks like Siamese except for the personality. She's totally quite, doesn't talk, doesn't purr but is always near me
There is a puzzle version! I hope the website ships to Slovakia because I must have it!
There's an insane number of cat breeds out there. People don't generally realize.
Load More Replies...I don't understand this in cat terms but I imagine it makes sense to the people who competitively play pokemon games.
Love the illustration style! Essence captured with very few lines, Haiku style illustration!
Had been hoping for this next dose of Mischko and Koschka. The illustrations are unique, especially the mouths!
Thanks for reminding me why I never got around to getting one 🙃 😅
Very cute comics...gotta ask though...am I the only one surprised to see the last name? Like, how did every family with that last name not change it 75 years ago? Obviously completely tangential to the post, but seeing that surname in print is legit jarring.
