We often hear about crazy names people give to their babies, or names they were gifted by their very creative parents. But it turns out that pets too can have names that lift eyebrows—if not of their fellow animals, then surely their vets’. Well, according to this viral Twitter thread, at least.
It all started when Brittany Means, a writer and editor from Albuquerque, NM, shared this tweet: “One of my greatest joys in life is when Jeff calls the vet to make an appointment and they ask for his name, and he says, Jeff. Then, they ask for our cat's name, and I watch him gather his strength before he tells them, Baby Jeff.”
This hit all too close to home to many pet owners out there who took the thread as an opportunity to share the ensued hilarity behind their furballs’ names. Especially when it’s time for a vet’s appointment.

Yes! When I am financially stable and able to, my dream in life is to adopt senior cats and dogs and give them amazing golden years!
Load More Replies...I adopt older animals….it will break your heart, but it is always, always worth it. You don’t get as much time with them, but their love and gratitude is incredibly moving and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
It's so hard. Our last senior only had a few months with us and I still miss her.
Load More Replies...we only adopt old cats...age 10ish and up. You have no surprises, because their habits have been formed. And even though they take longer to adjust, it's so worth it. I am gazing over at our Maya, about 13, and our Oliver, about 16. Both elder rescues. both perfect babies 💛
Awwww! My nickname is Tweety and I have a tattoo of the character, but I"d rather have your Tweety!
she's beautiful, and I hope her retirement with you is long and happy
There's a sweet girl at the shelter I work at and she's a year older than me. Super sweet darling
I applaud people like you, I wish I could be the type of person that could be the same, but when an animal dies it's actually to much for me to bare. I once read a story years ago about a man who was fostering terminally ill children that were in the system so they had someone to hold them when the time come. It was an older American man, but the emotional strength it must have took to put his own feelings aside to comfort those kids must be immense.
What a wonderful gift you are giving her. Each of you will receive such great rewards from each other !!!!!
I wouldn’t let my brother in law or sisters in law send their dad’s 10 year old chihuahua to a shelter when their father had to go into hospice. She has no teeth and a heart murmur that causes fluid build up in her lungs. She’s been with us for almost two years now and aside from her occasional bowel issues (she has pooped diarrhea twice ON THE SOFA in the past month) she’s a sweet heart. She has learned how to be a dog here, and our 3 year old Maltese has taught her what puppy play is! She keeps up with the puppy’s energy and it’s wonderful to see
Annie, Max, Sheena, Benny, Damon, Jake, Andy. I always choose "hooman" names for my cats.
more people need to go to the shelter and just ask for either the oldest animal or the one that's been there the longest, if they can manage that emotionally/financially
Nuisance will be 18 in June. And we've had her since she was 5 weeks old. (The mother's owner was going to throw the kittens in the trash because the queen got killed.) Nuisance will be cared for until she goes.
Thank you for saving her and giving her the best life ever in her senior years! My Brother’s cat lived to 27.
I once had a cat who lived to be 17. Her name got worse by the years... Rip Moldie P**n
Bored Panda spoke with Molly DeVoss, a certified feline training and behavior specialist with a vision to reduce the number of cats euthanized in shelters, who runs the Cat Behavior Solutions agency. We asked Molly how important, in her opinion, the name we give to our cat is and she said that a cat’s name is more important to you than others.
“So pick something you love – or something that makes you giggle,” Molly suggested. She also added that the cat doesn’t speak English so he has no idea of the meaning behind his name. “Cats will learn their names fairly quickly and it is an opportunity for you to get their attention on cue.”
For those who are wondering if cats actually recognize their names, and Molly confirmed that cats indeed do recognize them. For that reason, “if you ever decide to change it, try to pick something that has the same number of syllables and ends in the same sound,” the cat behavior specialist explained.
Moreover, cat names, just like human names, have their trends. “I see cat names trending with popular movie characters, TV shows and heartthrobs. Timon and Pumba (the warthog and meerkat) from Lion King are cute for siblings,” Molly told us.
“Working with a lot of shelter cats, I see a lot of names – and have the opportunity to name a lot of cats. Food themes are popular; we have candy cats with names like Skittles, Jelly Bean, and Pez. I typically adopt red cats and name them in a spicy theme: Tabasco, Salsa, and Pico de Gato.”
When it comes to the names you don’t want to give your furball, Molly reminds everyone to not name their cat anything that might offend someone else. “Name your cat something that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside,” she concluded.
My son has a cat named Frank Sinatra. But he's Siamese with blue eyes and we call him old blue eyes!
Fattie Harris was a footballer. Not as famous as Fatty Foulke, but he was a solid 'keeper in his own right.

I approve of your boys. But I do not think that means what you think it means....
Load More Replies...My son named our cat Spatzio. He was three. Here is a good suggestion for a cat name Catnis Everpreen feel free to use it.
I had a cat we named Al Qaeda Marie. She would attack and then hide in her box fort. (It was 2003 so they were talked about a lot more than they are now.) The vets refused to call her Al Qaeda, so we ended up calling her Allie Marie. It used to crack me up to see them fumble over her name.
We would feed this one stray cat and one day she came around with kittens. The kittens were polydactyl and I named them Sechs, Sieben and Acht (6,7 and 8 in German) to match their extra beans.
My 8-clawed little monster is Sasquatch. He's a house panther, too smart for his own good.
Load More Replies...I have served: Senator Augustus Finchley ‘Fatso’ Pinknose, Esquire, Heather Frequent-flyer Battlecat from Hell, Prozac Mothcatcher Speightsbox McSpike, Suckles Slugbutt McScrattigan, and finally, Nermal.
My cat's name is Vic after the heroine from Nos4tu. I have to spell it out everytime I call to make her an appointment and they call her a boy for the actual visit no matter how many times we tell them she is a girl
No unusual names for my 2 girls, just Stefany (Steffy for short) and Mazikeen (Maze for short), although I did see a family on TikTok who got a hairless cat and called it Lord Nutsack 😆
we have a Kareltje de grote (Kareltje the great) A red tabby with the additude of his namesake. He was found on a German autobahn in the middel of nowhere. Just a few weeks old, scared, dehydrated (it was 35 celcuis outside). A friend of us found hi and took him home. Only to find out that her boyfriend really f*****g hates cats (and he got locked.. the cat, not the boyfriend.. but he got locked in a catcrate) So we got him from this friend and took this bundle of chaotic energy with us.
Poor Thing. Best cat ever. He appeared as a small kitten, managed to evade animal control, and sat on our back deck otherwise. My mother would shout, "Could someone feed that poor thing." Turned into, "Feed Poor Thing." It was his name after awhile. Big tough tom cat who wore a big bright red bow at Christmas proudly. Made sure you noticed (if he wanted it off, he could have easily removed it). Loved by all.
We had the most gorgeous, elegant cat with an innocent-sounding girly name. She was hella dangerous though, and after a few mishaps the vet put a sign on her cage: GLOVES! The other cat in the house was fiercely protective of her, even if there was absolutely no need. His name was Mao.
Our (f) kitten has been named by the kids... Snoop Moggy Mogg. Vet loved it! :D
I once found a stray cat. He was severely infested with stomach worms and made his entry to my home by puking them up behind the computer in all the wires. (Obviously after a hard and from my side bloody fight to catch him) He was named Syntax error, because he more or less made one. Later on he was renamed Syntax Ok because he started to function normally.
My girl is Princess Voodoo Grumpypants. And my boy is Mister Spider Monkey. We call him SaM. I also have a limited time (2 yrs while my son is on a ship in the Navy) that is named Marcus.
When I was living in the Middle East in the late 90s, I found 3 very young filthy hungry ferals. I hadn't had a cat before and figured that one would be plenty of work. So I picked the one that seemed the healthiest to me and gave her an angelic name: Misha-el, which means "next to god." I plopped her into a warm bath and cleaned her up. I already had bought a baby chick because I was feeling rather lonely. Misha and Charlie got on with each other right away. Three days later I stumbled across her sisters, who were now looking even scruffier. Now having a better understanding of how sweet kittens can be, I felt very sorry for them. I ran home and grabbed a couple of towels, returned and wrapped them up to keep my dress clean. Back at home, they got the warm bath treatment too. Nobody objected and soon the three were tumbling over each other and the chicken. The noisiest became Gabriele (The Angel with the trumpet). The sweetest looking most mischievous became Lucifer, the light bringer. She was Lucy
My youngest is named Domnişoară Mărăcine .... (Ms Bramble) because I found her in a bramble bush. However, I currently live in the UK and no one can pronounce it. xD so she gets called "Mara" >.>
My cat's name is Magic Fuzzypaws. I got her as a rescue, she already had the name Magic which I thought really suited a long-haired fluffy black cat. Over the years I've had Morgoth, Arwen, Galadriel, Pixie, Tiggy, Cinnamon and her sister Nutmeg and their brother Aramis, Sugar and her brother Spice, Max and Silver. My first cat was Jennyanydots from T S Elliot; her fur was of the tabby kind with tiger stripes and leopard spots x
As a child, my partner had a male Siamese named Prudence, whom she declared was "an honorary female." Now, we have a ginger rescue boy. From his chip, we found out he'd had a previous family who'd moved O/S (he had run away in the confusion of packing; they were overjoyed he'd found a new family.) Anyway, due to double-family, indecision and us, he now rejoices in the name Pushkin Sawyer Sher-Khan Jones Mc(partners surname) Hooley esquire. aka: Catty Pops, Tiddles, The Cat and Wee Orange B4stard.
We have 4 cats. Sir Salem and Rayna Joy are tuxedo cats. Niko is our littlest (not youngest) and we call him Nikolai The Terrible when he's bad but his name is actually Niko Butters Poptart. He was sick as a baby and only stopped crying when I said "poptarts" so.. My hubs added the Butters. He's always really bad or really loving. Makes it hard to be mad. My last one is Poppy Ann. Popsicle is her nickname. My husband called the vet once and said he needed "an appointment for Poppy. Because baby Pop-pop wasn't feeling well". Ha. I fell off the couch. The receptionist texted me right after asking if I heard what he said! The cat he didn't want at all is certainly not MY cat! Lol! It's okay. Salem (Sally) loves me more!
I currently have Miss Mitty the Kitty (my profile pic) and Natty Catty. Previously I had Lady Zara and Sir Edward (just felt right to have them titled), and Vinny & Touly (after Vincent Van Gogh and Toulouse Lautrec - Vinny the cat was an insane redhead, but was not missing an ear thankfully!)
My dog's full name is Princess Jasmine Rice. Watching vet techs try to decide whether to call her Princess or Jasmine always makes my day (we call her Princess. Or Pinches, Punches, Pibby, Squishy, Fat Baby, Baby Dog, Bababooey, Long Grain, Spicy Rice...)
not as good as some here but we had a Baby Girl, Vinny, Tripod (3legs), Salem. Then outside- Guy, Sophie, Pretty girl, OC (outside cat). Now we have in house - Taki, Bacardi, Coke, Lime, Joey, and Lucy (lucipurr)
When I rescued my cat from a bad home situation her name was Frankie. But then the vets would confuse the name thinking she was a boy. So, I changed her name to Miss Frankie. Then, I dont know why, I started calling her Miss Frankfurter. Now she is definitely Miss Frankfurter.
My kitty, Catgirl, says she appreciates her name even more now. Boy says that's his name, don't wear it out.
I named my cat Noah- after I brought him home from the shelter I felt I was constantly saying "No! Ah!" And it stuck :)
My next door neighbours cats are called mummy cat and daddy cat 😂 daddy cat is a lovely cat but likes to sneak into my house. Been woke up from a nap a couple of times to him cuddled up to me 😂 Her son named them when he was 3 😂
My cat's signature on birthday cards, etc. is Woodgie the Wondercat - that's the name on her Twitter account, too.
When I was a youth (20ish) I got two tiny kittens from a co-worker. and named them Buster and Ball. Just so I could call them Ball Buster, my co-worker was not impressed, not impressed at all. Oh and my 130lb male Akita (dog) is named Kitty. It's fun to call him at the dog park, Here Kitty Kitty Kitty and a 130lb dog comes.
Cats from the shelter have funny names. Currently we have Mr. Finnegan (shelter name Chuckles} and Jasper (shelter name Captain America). Our 1st cat when we got married was named Sam. SHE came from our neighbor and she was pregnant. She was mostly grey. She had 4 kittens. Alice, B&W. Boo, all black. Sneakers, tiger stripe with white boots, and Lucky, brown and white
My brother's kitten is Calcifer and she is adorable. I have always adopted cats with pretty regular names and I don't like to change them. However, if I could name one myself, I would have a big ginger Tom and call him Chairman Meow.
We've got kitties named Phileas Fogg (Jules Verne character ) a.k.a. Fatty Finn and Winnie Cooper. Woofers named George Pup Pup, Jackson Muttley, and Charlie Brown Dog.
My cat (a male, white Burmese with a touch of ginger along his back) is named El Dorado.
My cat's name is Wonky Eye Luna. We found her tiny, cold and hurt. So she has one big yellow moon eye and a little blind winky eye.
I gave my sister a cat bday card one year. It had a lot of cats on the front so I named them all after mine (I had 7 at the time I think). One extra on the card for the ones I actually had so I wrote "Random cat" as it's name. So a year later a few of my older ones past away an I got a kitten. I named him Random Lee. He's a character. I've also had his face printed one year on a cup an shirt and gave them to her as bday gift. "Random mug" and "Random Tee" was also written under the photo. Lol. And his nickname is Mr Puffy Pants. Husband calls him A$$h0le.
My sister brought home a lab rat from school and named him Ratty Pie Snookum Baby O'Mine.
I had a cat named, Dr. Puss von Schpanken-Hardburger Esquire the 4th and a half. I still think about Dr. Puss all the time... I miss that lil guy.
Tricksy Dixie and her Royal Highness Black Dahlia Diva Flower approve these names! (Or, as we usually call them, Dix and Dammit-Dahlia)
The first cat I ever owned had a bad habit of falling into the bathtub almost every time it was occupied. He was the biggest "Dingbat" you ever saw...and that name stuck!
My first cat was Ranja von Ulthar (from the Lovecraft story), her adopted son was Mio Vargbane (wolfslayer). Then came Loke the norse trickster god, Theo the teddybear and Zita (named after Modesty Blaise). Sara and Siri were pre-named, but Felix the Floof needed a change (he was originally named after some football guy), and finally Kirepuss was Kira until I got her but my niece is also Kira
14 years ago I adopted a black cat... i'm from Italy and it was the time when Berlusconi did the unfunny joke about Obama that was " a bit tanned".. the volunteer that found my cat called it Obama, I didn't like the name but he answered when called Obi, so he became Obi wan kenobi..or Obi.. or Bobo..or Bobinski..
Our puppy's name is Dandy Chiggins. We like to introduce him as "The" Dandy Chiggins, lol
At 25 I had a cat named pumpkin and found a cat that I named Poopers, because I thought it was a funny word. In an absolutely unforeseen turn of events, in the next 6 years my mom met and married a man originally from Belgium. After the wedding, I go with them to meet the family. I spend 2 weeks meeting tons of elderly Flemish people, many asked about my pets and I said their names are Pumpkin and Poopers. They either laughed or gave me a weird look, which is the same reaction here in the US. Very end of the trip, at a dinner party, the host passes out pornographic shot glasses. Everyone is laughing and talking in Flemish, at which time it comes to my attention that Poopers is something sexual in Flemish. I'm not entirely clear on the translation. But I was mortified, replaying all of the conversations with people I had met over the weeks.
I found an abandoned 6? week old kitten. I named him Zeke. About four or five months later, it dawned on me to look. Her name officially became Zakia, but I always called her Zeke.
My neighbors have a cat named Chocolate Thunder (or just CT), we once cat sit a cat names Kittywampus, and my girl's full name is Daisy May Rose Princess Purrs Bunny Gidgit Clementine [Our last name] I also had a cat named Sketti, like Spaghetti (He was an orange tabby) But I was 6, and couldn't say Spaghetti.
Laugh In was very popular when I got my first cat. Named him Sweet Bippy. Mostly called him Bipper, but he was the sweetest cat ever!
This is "Not My Cat". He's feral, but gets very vocal when he wants dinner.
Oh, also.. the nickname I gave to a friend's dog is "Achmed" Inspired by Achmed the dead terrorist (the puppet), because... well.
My cat's full name on her paperwork is "Decogatto F***y Ferretti". She's Pixie now.
We had Burt Reynolds (who the receptionist refused to say out loud lol) and we had little Huey. It didn't dawn on us until we took him in for a checkup. Our last name is Lewis. Yes, his name was Huey Lewis.
My old cat, Scylla, and my old dog, Charybdis, would appreciate this post. The vets' staff never knew how to pronounce their names. They obviously weren't Classics majors.
I heard a mewing near my car, and a thorough investigation revealed a gray kitten in the engine compartment. When we secured it we decided to name it Gris (French for Gray). After we bathed her, we changed her name to Blanca. Coming for fleas, my wife got a few bites, and her lymph glands got swollen because she got 'cat scratch fever.' Her final name became Blanca Evil Infector Gris Monkey. IMG_2004-6...0-jpeg.jpg
"Litte Orphan Annie" because we found her as a tiny baby abandoned on a vacant block. She was a wonderful cat. And 'Devil" all Black, graceful and loving. And "Blackness" our first cat when I was a child.
Mine are Winston, Hemingway, Atlas, Johnny, Marvin and...Pineapple. My husband named one of these cats lol
My fat cat is named Mini Horse but she goes by Minna around the house- I love making appointments for her haha
i have a kitten named gizmo.he has to have his balls chopped off today
Our cat, Herr Erwin Schrödinger. My husband named him, he is a physisist. The problem is, he lives up to his name. Half the time we don't know if he is inside or outside. Hege_ip5_I...49dbb6.jpg
I current wait upon Lady Samantha Diana Riley-Fuller and Lord Maxwell Richard Riley-Fuller. Aka, Sam & Max.
We had a dog many years ago named Shadow (which are black), but was all white (we got him when he was 5 and didn't want to confuse him by changing his name). Now we have an all black dog (with a small white stripe on her head) named Misty (normal thought of as a whiter color), short name for Black Mist, though. We call her a Little Skunker when she misbehaves.
i love seeing all the cat names! i currently have: Tac, Caboose, One-Eyed Willie, Miaka, and (Pig) Penny. i have had: Ani, Charlie, Conner Baby, Maya, Nibbler, Kpu. Kpu is not a typo, pronounced Kippoo. when i was a kid, we had a cat named Shithead and another later named FI (short for F**k It). We also had a cat named Kitten, and a Steve.
I tried to come up with a beautiful name for my weird little kitty I found in the woods, but "Baby Bones" is what stuck. She loves her name, loves hearing her name but I suspect the vet secretly hates having to say her full name out loud.
I do post about my cats on occasion - Void and Orange. Erm...yes, their actual names are indeed Void and Orange ^^; Void is a solid black kitty and Orange is a ginger tabby, that is why they are named that.
My mom and I named my first cat she got me at age 5, Cuddles Fifi Grey Whiskers. A year later we moved from a big city to a small town and I made a new friend in Grade One, who perplexed me when she said her gerbil had the exact same name. I mean, how’s that possible? Who calls a gerbil who bites “Cuddles?” I still think they were putting me on. My Cuddles live to age 20.
My ex always wanted a dog named Stain so he could go outside and call it: "Come Stain." He was so immature, I realize now.
I had a Dooley's Honeymoon ( MC cat F ) and even an O Bama from Kentucky ( MC cat M ) both have passed but I still love to joke that I had a "president " in the house :) Miss'm both very much.
Almost forgot: O Bama's kids have the names "Monsignor Le Plumeau", "Diva Dame Fluffy", Joe ( Cocker ), Elvis ( Presley, he has sideburns lol ), "Snoezepoes", Theo(dore), and our little Bandida.

All of my cats are named after someone who worked with or are named after Paul Williams, our first cat is named after Paul Williams because we were watching a muppets Christmas carol and Paul Williams did the music for it, the second cat is named roger nickels, and the most recent is Barbara Streisand the cat nee bunny
My favorites are pets named the opposite gender and their owner's trying to make ammends. Boy Named Sue, Butch-erina. Even cuter are the owner's that double down on cross-named pets. HE is very in touch with his feminine side. Or She is a vey independent woman.
My niece's cat is called Princess Pickles. She is so regal and full of herself.
F A N N Y -- I did not name her. That's the name on her birth certificate. :P
