Travel Moments: Quirky And Bizarre Things Spotted At Airports

For a place that is supposed to be incredibly orderly, airports can feel weirdly lawless. It often seems like everyone is having their first day on Earth and the whole thing is one big fever dream.

You see people napping on the floor or doing yoga by the gate. Someone is holding up security because they thought a jar of Nutella somehow didn’t count as a liquid. Travelers are drinking beer at 7 a.m.

Even money starts to feel like a fictional concept when you hand over $8 for a bottle of water without batting an eye. Airports really do turn us into strange little aliens.

So why does a place that is basically just meant to get us from point A to point B make travelers behave like they’ve been dropped into a social experiment? Well, to be fair, airports can put us under quite a bit of pressure.

Psychologist Steve Taylor, writing for Psychology Today, explains that anxiety can influence how we respond to the whole experience. Some travelers are afraid of flying, while the crowds and constant noise can leave us feeling even more overwhelmed.

When that happens, small annoyances can suddenly feel much bigger than they normally would. It becomes easier to lose patience and react in ways we probably wouldn’t anywhere else.

Sociology professor Sheryl Skaggs told The Atlantic that this can be especially tough for people who don’t fly very often. They may not fully understand how everything works, which can make the whole process feel even more frustrating when it doesn’t go smoothly.

If this is their big holiday of the year, they may have spent hundreds of dollars and built the whole trip up in their head. After sitting through several delays or realizing they’re going to miss a family dinner they planned the journey around, it’s no surprise that tempers can start to flare.

As a result, a lot of folks turn to alcohol to take the edge off. The problem is that it doesn’t always have the calming effect they’re hoping for. Alcohol can lower our inhibitions and make emotions harder to control, which isn’t exactly ideal when we’re already stressed.

Not to mention, once we get on the plane and end up thousands of feet in the air, the lower oxygen levels and dry cabin air can make drinking feel even rougher on the body. Alcohol can add to dehydration and tiredness, which probably isn’t going to make a stressful flight any more pleasant.

Flying, in general, has become a lot less comfortable than it used to be. Alexandra Murphy, who has studied airline behavior, told The Atlantic that airlines once made a real effort to help passengers feel at ease in such an unfamiliar setting. Remember when you could get a hot meal on just about any flight? Yeah, good times.

These days, that often costs extra, or isn’t offered at all on shorter flights. Airlines have also squeezed more seats into cabins over the years, leaving less space between rows and less room to get comfortable.

There’s simply less to distract us from the fact that we’re packed into a plane with very little control over what happens next.

Of course, that doesn’t mean going to an airport is automatically a miserable part of traveling. There’s something pretty interesting about them too.

Taylor describes airports as “liminal” spaces because, for a while, we’re somewhere between where we came from and where we’re going. Once we pass through security, borders start to feel a little blurry. Time does too.

People are crossing time zones and sleeping at hours that would normally make no sense. Around you, there are travelers from all over the world heading in completely different directions.

For a while, normal life feels like it’s been put on hold. Maybe that’s part of why airports can feel so unreal. They bring out some very strange behavior, but there’s also something kind of fun about everyone briefly existing in that weird little world together.

So the next time you find yourself doing something at an airport that would seem completely ridiculous anywhere else, maybe give yourself a little grace. These places are stressful and strangely freeing at the same time, which is a pretty unusual combination.

For a few hours, we all step outside our normal routines and share the same slightly surreal world. And if that gives us a few hilarious photos along the way, that’s not such a bad bonus.
