Friends Leave Woman Behind At Airport After She’s Denied Boarding, Face Demands To Pay Her Back

Some friendships become strained and even break apart for the most absurd reasons, and money is one of them. In a recent survey, 21% of respondents admitted to losing friends because of money-related issues.

The story you’re about to read is part of that statistic. A woman could not board an airplane and join her friends on a vacation because she had something illegal in her possession. However, as the others decided to proceed as planned, she got upset with them and demanded they pay back her share of the expenses.

Highlights
  • Survey reveals 21% lost friends over money issues, highlighting fragile nature of friendships when finances are involved.
  • Conflict highlights differing financial priorities: woman’s friends feel it's unreasonable to cover extra costs due to her mistake.
  • Therapists suggest that managing emotions and understanding each other’s financial situations can help prevent friendship rifts.

The story’s author considers paying the disgruntled friend to keep the peace but wonders if such actions would be right. Scroll down for the full story.

Based on the author’s account, the woman put herself in a tight spot because she had something illegal on her. In that scenario, there is no one to blame but her.

However, refusing to support a friend financially, like what the group did, is a common reason for strained relationships. Debt.com says friendships can deteriorate and even fall apart if you refuse to help during desperate times.

Many may disagree with the belief that money is the root of all evil. However, people won’t hesitate to end a friendship if $500 is on the line. That’s according to a survey from Bank of America, where 40% of the respondents also said they would cut ties with someone if the disagreement involved $100.

As relationship therapist Simone Bose told Refinery29, “Money is an emotional issue,” and discussing it among friends shows vulnerability. It can explain why the tension between the entire group appears to be long-standing at this point.

The woman became irate about her friends’ decision to go without her, even if her ill-advised choices caused her to miss the trip. She may have let her disappointment get to her, lashing out at everyone.

In this scenario, trying to have a broader understanding of the situation could have helped avoid the ongoing rift. According to financial therapist Amanda Clayman, “money is subjective,” and trying to impose a “reality” different from someone else’s could lead to a touchy conversation.

In the story, the woman expected everyone to shoulder the expenses without considering each one’s financial situation.

“Maybe they’re making different choices with their money,” Clayman told Vox. “Maybe they’re focused on a goal, or maybe they have three times as much in student loans.”

The author did explain that they are on a tight budget because of recurring bills, and paying for their friend’s missed vacation may put them a month behind their payoff plan.

None of the people in the friend group are obligated to agree to all of the woman’s demands. But as a compromise, they could reimburse her for her supposed accommodation.

What do you think, readers? Should the author pay the amount to avoid escalating the issue further?

The author provided more details in their answers to commenters’ questions, but most of them sided against the woman

NTA. I am not a cannabis user (it's legal here), but I have brought back certain types of cannabis for my sister who uses it for medical purposes in my travels. Every time, I call the airport ahead of time and speak to security to ensure that I can legally carry it, even though it's legal here. People have to be responsible for themselves. The rest of the people on the trip should not have had to suffer for her mistake. This reminds me of basketball star BG who got caught in Russia with the same. It's terrible, the violence she was subjected to, but her foolishness created tragedy, because a horrible arms dealer was let free to repatriate her, and his contacts and abilities escalated the war on Ukraine and created casualties there. I wonder how many innocent Ukrainians lost their lives for her freedom because she didn't think to look up if she could take a vape pen to Russia?

When they booked they all agreed to split it 4 ways - that's the contract they had between themselves and it's what they all budgeted for. She fuct up, so she loses the money she paid for the whole holiday. The other 3 did not contribute to her f*k up, so they should not have to subsidise her mistake.

And those that say she 'subsidised' their holiday? Nah... the excursions will have been ticketed so they used their own tickets. They didn't use hers. Flight? Her fault. If it was a hotel? Her fault. Maybe if it was an apartment they could redistribute the cost 3 ways instead of 4. If they feel like it.

I'm sure the hotel or whatever accommodations won't refund them her share because she didn't make it.

Why should the friends pay for Sarah? She is the one who didn't check her bags before packing to see if there was something in there that shouldn't be. It's like the people who had bullets in their luggage and going to Turks & Caicos - fool, you didn't check and now you are in jail, FAFO.

I don't understand this. Everytime I travel I completely empty my luggage first before packing.

She did it to herself. Her friends didn't budget for her part of the bill to be added to theirs. And they shouldn't have to, they're not the ones who brought illegal d***s into an airport. Even if it's legal, some airports don't allow weed. What an idiot

She should be thanking her lucky stars that got found on her side of the Pacific. The State of Hawaii doesn't f**k around when it comes to weed coming in, esp. extracts and oils.

It doesn't matter if weed is legal in some places - you shouldn't casually be carrying it with you when you fly. You should just assume it's going to be illegal if you're found with it and that you're going to get in trouble. Look what happened to the US basketball player who ended up in a Russian jail for almost a year!
