40 Times People Were So Surprised By The Things They Found In Second-Hand Books, They Just Had To Share
The treasures inside second-hand books aren't limited to the texts they possess. From time to time, readers leave all kinds of gifts for others to discover. Some of them, like a pair of glasses, are simply forgotten between the pages but every once in a while, a good samaritan leaves behind a little thingy just to make your day. Found A Little Surprise In The Library Book I Borrowed
Leave the next guy $5 but and leave the note from the original person, lol
Or you could have had the library look up whoever had borrowed the book last and made sure they got their ticket back.
I do not think so. Imagine how sick they felt when they could not find the ticket, having forgot where it was placed... "Honey, remember the lotto scratch off..."
Load More Replies...I found a twenty dollar note once inside a book! Boy it made me smile.
I once found a $50 bill on the sidewalk in the Financial District of San Francisco. I was coming into work late that day and there was no one around where I found the money, so there was no way to return it to anyone one. I felt kinda bad because it was only a week or two before Christmas.
Load More Replies...no no no no - he must buy another ticket and only that ticket owns a place in the book
There are no official data for the size of the second-hand book market. But according to a survey by Statista, in both the UK and the US more than half of us are choosing to buy books second-hand instead of new.
Patrik Oqvist from World of Books, the UK's largest second-hand book retailer, believes the market is growing by 8-10% a year.
"There's no stigma to buying second-hand now," he told BBC. "We take them to the beach and spill coffee on them, but they don't stop working because of that." Other reasons might be important for buyers as well, for example, the lower price, and the fact that they're recycling.
Nothing Like Picking Up A Book And Finding A Photo (And Autograph) Of The Author Inside

I bought a book at an antique store in Maryland. It was written by a man who was an interesting character. It was called Senate Journal, 1943-1945. I knew it was signed by the author. I bought it to give to my oldest who is a government, history and political science teacher. Later my son in law discovered that the book had an additional autograph, it was Lady Bird Johnson’s autograph. Blew my mind.
As a huge SK fan, I am insanely jealous, but also very pleased for the person who found this
And, of course, there's the chance of finding something unique. World of Books received a call last year from a grandmother in Australia who had ordered an annual that she remembered owning as a child, full of quizzes, mazes and puzzles. When she got it, she couldn't believe it was her own original copy, with the inscription from her parents to her.
These 4 And 5 Leaf Clovers I Found In This Nearly 200-Year-Old Book
That's pretty awesome. My eyes immediately went to the words "immortal shamrock" on the page on the left. Which is also pretty awesome.
the other book says, "they are preserved " at the top of the shamrock
Load More Replies...That's awesome! I once found a four-leaf clover in a second-hand book I bought from a street vendor (a historical fiction about the Lady and the Unicorn tapestry). I was on my way to Ireland from Vancouver and I bought it the night before I left so I had something to read on the plane. I discovered it on the plane! The symbol of the shamrock was even more significant. I had an amazing trip :)
as said below; my eyes also went directly to the word "immortal shamrock"
There's quite a few of those hidden in my books. Had a clover plant that routinely popped out 4, 5, and even a 7 leaf clover.
I Found This In A 1949 Children's Book I Bought Today
It is Eletelephony, by Laura Elizabeth Richards. Not written by her, of course, since she passed away in 1943.
Probably practicing typing for class. With the uneven letters, the typos, and the "Poem 1" up top it seems a good chance that's what it is.

My Son Found A Report Card From Nearly 100 Years Ago In His Library Book
Maybe try finding her since the name is clearly visible. She could still be alive you never know!
Found her: annamae m valpey born 1914, lived in California- https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/categories/42/?name=Katherine+M_Valpey&pg=2
I love the fact that they had a class called citizenship. Classes like this need brought back! To apply for citizenship a person must know more than the average natural born citizen actually knows, which is sad that we aren't taught all of this.

Somewhere Back In Time, The Former Owner Of These Glasses Is Still Looking For Them
It looks like they have been in there so long, they have cracked the binding. Found in "The Story of a Fight" by Hugh Lloyd
I don't understand how someone can forget their glasses, the book isn't going to close properly with them in there so surely you would notice something was up.
Those are really old reading glasses. That sort of design folds really flat, unlike todays spectacle designs, but not flat enough to allow the book to close properly. I can see someone shelving the book in a hurry or this being one of many books being shelved that the person did not realize there was something in the book.
Load More Replies...That makes me weirdly sad. Mainly because my first thought is that the person was looking at the book, set it down to go to sleep, and never needed their glasses again... I've made myself sad.
I loved the title for this one. I can actually picture the owner right "now" (somewhere in time) looking for it. Since time is a dimension we just can't see, it's really happening right now.

A 1970's Plane Ticket
Actually air quality was higher because they had to replace the air inside cabin more often. Now airlines replace as little air as possible and therefore the quality has tanked.
Load More Replies...haha id be that one person to bring the ticket up to the flight and be like- " so ya, im around 50 years late for my flight but uh..... can i still get that trip to New York.... ? ;D"
I think that Waltrud Ireland was an author in the 70’s. He (or she?) did a study on german communism which would explain why the plane ticket was found in a book written in german with annotations.
Last name Ireland, flying a Scottish Airline, located at at Scotland Airport, flying from New York, to London, and back to New York...go figure.

Back in the “good old days” when women didn’t have names of their own. This ticket belonged to the wife of Waltreed Vreland. I’m sure before she was his wife, she was the possession (oops, I mean daughter) of her father.
Looks like whoever issued the ticket, couldn't find a pen and just used a colouring pencil they had lying around.
Found This In House I’m Tearing Apart In A Book Like Someone Wanted To Keep Them Don’t Think It’s Real Money
This is a currency used in the Philippines when japan invaded our country..
Judging by the other comments, looks like they found an interesting piece of history
It's kinda real. It was the money that the Japanese empire issued for the Philippines when they occupied it in WWII (look down at #78 - they found an entire collection)
Cool exclamation marks! I'm using the BP app rather than a webpage because of issues when I do the latter, so emojis are not an option at the moment.

My brother made one of those. Probably kept his little stash in it. Those were the days. PS: He stole the little stash ('pot' or 'grass' as it was colloquially known then) from my mom. Who PS, had taken if away from my other bro who found it on the floor of our house of worship. Bro would take little bits from where my mom had put it, and replace with oregano, until it was all oregano.
I've made a couple of these - mostly as a secure spot for my Rx pain meds but also just for the novelty of it. The first one took forever to make, only to discover a really disturbing passage of writing that rendered it unusable; the second took only about an hour and came out neater. I used books from the library's free-giveaway shelf.

Load More Replies...I have one put away with my money collection, that I've had for many years. A shame that I lost the one that my great grandmother gave me the year I graduated (1976). Sadly, it got stolen.
It shouldn't be difficult to replace a 1976 $2 bill. Over half a billion ("b") were printed for the Bicentennial, and large numbers of them were saved as keepsakes. You should be able to get a nice uncirculated one from a dealer for maybe $3-$5.
Load More Replies...I've heard stories of store clerks calling the p olice on people trying to use these to make purchases, insisting there's "no such thing as a $2 bill." I have several, uncirculated that my mother had saved.
Go to your local bank with two dollars, and ask for one. They are still in circulation.
Load More Replies...duuuuuuuuuude real $2 bills are super rare! they dont make these anymore so its really hard to get them! i have at least three $2 bills on me.
They are not rare, not worth more than their face value and are in US circulation. Only certain years are worth money. I have a color 1976 $2 bill that's worth about $4.
Load More Replies...I love to play " dollar poker" and the serial numbers on this bill are "to die for"!!!!
I used to save those, but nosy granddaughters went through my stuff!
Modern green-seal $2 bills are uncommon, but they're not rare. They only make up about 1% of bills in circulation but that still amounts to maybe a billion of them. The problem is that people _think_ they're rare so they save any they do find in change, making the bill even less common, and so on. In any case the Treasury considers them to be part of regular currency production, with new ones printed every few years as needed. The bills definitely haven't been discontinued or withdrawn - in fact production's gone up somewhat over the last 3 or 4 years. FWIW, the US is one of the few major countries that *doesn't* have a regularly-circulating $2 denomination. If we did it would save us taxpayers a nice chunk of change because a lot fewer $1 bills would have to be printed.

Found In An 1860's Era Bible
This from an age when "Healthy" and "Harmless" could mean trace amounts of arsenic and lead, high quantities of opium or morphine, and quite a few other unwanted ingredients makes me question it's safety. Good news though, this seems to still be in use (at least a modified version of) and this card is now a collectible. Also, there are no listed problems with this powder, so maybe it really was a safe one.
Probably once belonged to a Swedish immigrant. About 10% of the Swedish population left their homes to try and find a future in the USA in those days.
From the little bit you can see of the pages, the Bible looks like it’s in excellent condition. It really preserved the advertising card too. Most ephemera that old, and not purposely preserved, get delicate and very crumbly, especially if exposed to extreme heat like in an attic.

Things I Have Found In Books
Amongst all these letters, photos and bookmarks you will see a report from the Adult Parole Board dated 1987. The person mentioned had been in Pentridge Prison since late 1977 for a very vicious murder committed under the influence of alcohol. The eleven page report states that he was quite intelligent and articulate but had been in trouble while in prison and had been moved around the prison system. It also says that he was hoping to start a new life once released and planned on changing his name. Whether he was released, or when, is unknown as I can find no record of him after the date on the parole papers
An eleven page report ? That should have left a pretty bump in that book !
Hahaha I thought it said "Adult Pardle Report" on the envelope and I was repeating "pardle, pardle pardle" in my mind to see if it was a word that sounded familiar. It did not.
This is fascinating! I used to live near this prison which is no longer a prison and is in fact now luxury apartments in the suburb of Preston in Melbourne, Australia!

Found A Garden's Worth Of Pressed Flowers And Plants In A Book From 1833
Found in volume five of "The New Testament with Commentary and Critical Notes by Adam Clarke" published by B. Waugh and T. Mason
I’d take them to a local botanical society or university Botany Department. It’s possible some of those plants have changed in almost 180 years (if these are vintage to the publication date of the book), or may have become rare. Probably not, but maybe. Someone (botanist or botany student?) might be interested in identifying them and comparing them to modern versions.
I found something similar over a series of pages from my ancestors that dated back to 1873... One of my relatives kept a scrap book filled with old articles and on many pages their were pressed flowers and little drawings.
Sometimes What You Find In An Old Book Is A Bit More Exciting Than The Old Book Itself
I imagine most things would be more interesting than a book about the public service of James A. Garfield.
Last time I used francs in the 90's a franc was worth about fifteen cents.
France revalued the franc numerous times. It was about 15¢ the last time I used them, too, but before that it was anywhere from a quarter to fractions of a penny depending on what version. Of course now it's all euros.
Load More Replies...Cool find! I did a bit of research and the bill appears to be from the first issue of Allied military currency printed after the liberation. That's consistent with the date (Series of 1944) and the logo "Émis en France" (Issued in France). Sadly it's probably not worth much as a collectible - maybe 5 bucks in top condition. But it's a heck of a reminder of those eventful days.

Empty Box Of Mr. T Crayons Found In "Encyclopedia Brown Carries On" By Donald J. Sobol
am i the only one who notices how many necklaces he is wearing..... yes. Ok 😂😂😂😂😂
Mr. T is famous for his love of gold necklaces and 'bling'. Apparently, there's actually profound meaning behind all of it. He said his necklaces are connected to his African slave ancestors, who were brought to America in iron chains, and he turned that to gold. He said he still felt like a slave, bought and sold by 'the powers that be'. And, yes, also because he loves gold. His hairstyle was inspired by the Mandinka warriors who are descendants of the great Mali Empire in Africa. I won't even go into his earrings, but there's great symbolism behind those as well.

Don’t Have A Bookmark? Try Using A Taco (Actual Photo Of An Actual Book Found In The Book Drop At My Library In Indiana A Few Years Back)
I don't know the bigger offense. Ruining the book, or not eating a taco.
Yup. Sounds like Indiana. (I'm a Hoosier myself and some very dumb people live here.)
As an Indiana native, I apologize sincerely for what my fellow Hoosier has done. They will be shunned and forced from our lands, forbidden to ever step foot back into our Taco joints again.

Friend Just Found This In An Old Shakespeare Book. Any Idea How Much They Owe Now?
well, today is 09.10.2019; back than 20.11.1953 (dd.mm.yyyy) so there were 24064 days inbetween (thanks internet!). 0.1$ for every day.. on day 1= 0.1 on day 2 = 0.2 3 = 0.3 and so on... day 24064 = 2406.60$ i hope this is not totally wrong :D
24064 x $0.10 = $2406.40. You're overcharging Lindsey Emerson 20 cents.

In my family, it’s not rare that parents put a lock of their children’s first hair away. I don’t know why, but my mom has a lock from my first haircut.🤷🏼♀️

Ok, I am now going to leave random bookmarks that I drew myself in books because why not.
I was going through my grandparents-in-laws book collection and came across an 1880 $10 bill. I showed it to them, they had no idea it was there. They put it back in the book and back on the shelf. Years later, they said they donated the books to a library. I asked if they took the $10 bill out. They forgot about it again. Someone got a nice collectors item probably worth a bundle.
I just had to say I love your screen name, lol :) Gave me a smile on a very early morning!
Load More Replies...Not long ago we found a birthday card with 50€ (55$) in a library book, we explained it to the librarian who got us in touch with the previous renter, checked that he was the the recipient of the birthday card (his name was on it) and gave him his birthday money... this young 18 year old guy was so surprised and pleased, he offered us a box of chocolates 😉
If you come across something meaningful or valuable in a library book, please consider taking it back to the library so they can hunt down the owner. Our software could tell us the last person to have the book, so we were happy to return things to our patrons.
The library I used to work for enacted measures to preserve anonymity in checking out library books. The Patriot Act gave the government access to this information which was previously protected by the first amendment. As soon as a book is checked in the record of who last checked it out is purged. All we know is the number of checkouts in a given calendar year. It's better that way, really.

At a fleemarket, I found a book with drawings and poems published just after WW2. To my astonishment I found this (Dutch) Jew star between the pages. P1080203-5...3383ec.jpg
Wow. It must be like touching history. I'm just curious. Were the artists/poets survivors of the war?

Check out Goodwill, etc type of stores. They have a great selection.
