Find Some Lost Places In The Canaries

Travelling to the canaries for holiday means spending the day on a crowded beach for a lot of tourists. Many miss the beauty and history of the islands you can find when you leave the big touristic spots.

During our stay on the island of La Palma, we discovered this little gem: the old port of La Fajana in the north of the island. It’s been abandoned a while ago but you can still imagine how it looked when it was used to transport goods to the capital Santa Cruz.

It’s an impressive trip down there on a small, windy and risky road. The nearby village is close to being a ghosttown, too as most inhabitants left it years ago and only come back to spend the weekends in their old homes.

Driving down on the old road from Franceses

The road is small and full of small and not so small rocks

you constantly hope for no opposing car

After passing through a small forest you arrive at almost sea level

a breathtaking view over lava rocks and banana plantations is granted

Between the plants you walk to the old port

The ruins on the rocks are a great sight

And the width of the sea lets you mind flow…

… to the times when this small port was crowded by workers and goods

From the past you walk to the present

The small village has only few inhabitants left

Those who stayed live a hard working life in this forgotten place

Most people only come back for the weekend

Or work in the bananas

you still expect them too be back, though
