They probably use always the same text they set as default and don't bother to check twice.

This has happened to me with my full-sized mailbox. Usually the mailman leaves larger packages on my porch, but I bet there was a lazy substitute that day. Took me forever to get that package out and it was squashed to fit in.

We don't actually know if he knocked or not. As a USPS worker, I've seen my colleagues not even knock, and I have also seen where we'd practically knock the door down, get no response, then get an irate complaint how we didn't try. People lie, both customers and delivery workers.

Yea, it’s always the drivers fault. Why carry a package all the way to the door, not knock, fill out a tag and leave just to have to come back the next day. My guess, the idiot left thinking the driver would be coming later or their sitting 5 feet from the door with ear pods in and couldn’t hear if the driver kicked the door in, Jesus Christ, people are stupid! Blame the driver!

I didn't see that this was a photoshop covering of the address at first, so it's possible that the carrier, probably a sub, left it... However times are changing and many companies WANT packages LEFT / delivered rather than returned to the post office undelivered.. Thus the ' CARRIER RELEASE ' notices on the packages. As a career carrier tho,, I would have left it at their door, not like that...

WAIT A MINUTE NOW,, THE CARRIER DIDN'T DO THIS ONE.... , THAT PACKAGE IS ONE A CUSTOMER PUT THERE, [ TO GO BACK TO SENDER ] .. ALL THE ADDRESS INFO HAS BEEN MARKED OUT.... THEY ARE REFUSING IT.. AS A RETIRED CARRIER, I'VE HAD MANY PEOPLE DO THAT TO ME.

I actually have an answer for this--my brother worked for UPS, and he said they frequently weigh packages several times to accommodate for a) customers over/under weighing their parcels, and b) customer service specialists not checking. So, it's entirely possible what was being shipped was something very light (e.g. a collectible baseball card) and just entered a random number, and later it was re-weighed and the data updated to '0' to reflect that it was under a pound. Now, the fact that no one bothered to see the giant gaping tear in the envelope is a different matter entirely.

Not exactly. The receiver has the choice on either a refund or replacement from the retailer. The retailer files a claim with the carrier to be reimbursed of the item cost.

A good idea is to plan ahead - check the expected size of the products you are about to buy before buying them - that way you can specify to your carrier exactly how and when you will want it delivered. The surprise alternative is as big a frustration to the carrier(delivery man) as it is for you.
