Father Publicly Disowns His Son With A Powerful Open Letter After He Marches In Charlottesville Protests
The small town of Charlottesville, Virginia, is making international headlines after a right-wing multi-group protest scheduled for August 11th turned shockingly violent. A Fargo, North Dakota man named Pearce Tefft has bravely stepped forward to denounce and disown his son, who identifies as a white nationalist and marched at the fateful Unite the Right rally. “Peter Tefft, my son, is not welcome at our family gatherings any longer,” he writes in a powerful open letter published on August 14th.
The Tefft family announcement comes just 6 months after Peter was labelled by locals in his hometown as a ‘Nazi,’ following the discovery of disturbing Nazi Germany-related content he had shared on social media. Though Tefft has refused the title and prefers to be known as a “pro-White activist,” his father admits in his letter that Peter has made jokes about throwing non-Fascists “into an oven.” Pearce Tefft, a liberal Democrat, maintains that his wayward son did not learn this discriminatory behaviour at home, and that the entire family rejects his actions and beliefs.
The Charlottesville protests, which Peter traveled from North Dakota to attend, escalated into chaos after a man associated with the neo-Nazi movement rammed into a crowd of pedestrians with his car, killing a 32-year-old woman named Heather Heyer. The rallies were triggered by plans to remove Confederate monuments from public spaces in Charlottesville, and have spurred new conversations about interracial conflict in the USA.
Read Pearce Tefft’s poignant letter below, and tell us what you think at the end.

The protests, triggered by plans to remove Confederate monuments from Charlottesville, later turned violent and claimed a 32-year-old woman’s life
Now, that same man’s father, Pearce Tefft, is stepping forward with a public letter addressed to his son, who has been labelled a ‘Nazi’ by his hometown peers
Silence was not an option for this dad, who identifies as a liberal Democrat and maintains that he has raised his family as such
After endless reports of chaos in Charlottesville, this was exactly what the world needed to hear

I agree that he was right to do that, but homophobic and transphobic fathers will disown their children very vehemently as well. In this case however, rather than because of something ingrained in values derived from religion, it's from the very human and universal idea that you shouldn't promote hate and violence, which is a very valid reason.
Load More Replies...Terrorism is terrorism, no matter what label you give yourself. His son is no different to the members of ISIS.
The thing with this is that people only go along with these things when they are vulnerable individuals or incredibly ignorant of the world. It is the reason ISIS has managed to recruit so many young people. While I agree with the stand this father has taken, I would like to know how many times they have tried to reach out to him and talk about this, to understand why he thinks like he does. The guy is young, impressionable and an idiot in understanding race. While what he has done is inexcusable, everyone should be looking at why someone from such an accepting family could be so easily swayed to hate the world. I don't see public shaming and isolation can possibly help him. I don't know what the solution is, but I'm not sure this is the right one. I guess it all depends on how much his family means to him and whether he is prepared to lose them over his feeling of superiority.
There is a part of "young and stupid", but it's also a part of society letting the ideas they're trying to promote fester. It's actually super easy to sway youth into radicalism, regardless of the religion or ideology. You just need the right people to twist it, especially in a society that still fosters a deep divide between races and harbours and feeds prejudice and hate. Everyone knows it's there, everyone knows why, and it'S not getting addressed, because it's white hate. It's that ugly chair that's been part of the furniture for so long it has got sentimental value and no one wants to throw it out. As for the son, well, when someone starts spewing hate and promoting, if not even engaging, in violence based on that hate, the priority is to protect the people it is aimed at, not the people who are performing that violence. The priority should not be to rehabilitate individuals, but to condemn the hate.

My question is, even in the face of freedom of speech, why in hell do we as Americans that sent our young men and women to fight against the Nazis, allow these animals freedom to roam our streets?
For an embarrassingly long time while the Nazis were wrecking Europe, the United States stood by and did nothing. Hitler was in admiration of what the US government did to the First Nations. There were quite a lot of Nazi sympathizers in the US at that time too, and Jewish refugees were turned away. The US joined the war when Japan bombed their territory. In light of that, I personally don't find it all that surprising. The values in US history sadly share a lot with the basis of nazism, and there are still too many of those that aren't getting addressed.
Load More Replies...This "pro-white" stuff reminds me of another phenomenon that's prevalent in the U.S. called "Christian persecution". Basically, some Christians (mainly Evangelicals) think that they're being persecuted because, nowadays, people won't like them if they bash gay people or they get pissy about people not putting Jesus first in Christmas (while not knowing or acknowledging that the majority of Christmas stuff is hand-lifted from pagan holidays like Saturnalia, and Jesus was just shoved in afterwards to fit Christianity into already familiar holidays and practices). The reason they feel like this is that they used to be, basically, the only respected group in America, so the introduction of social equality causing them to have to tolerate other people feels like persecution to them.
"Losing privilege" feels like "losing rights" to privileged people. They get mad about being called on their bigotry, because they used to go unchallenged. They used to be the only voice, and now they have to share the open space with the rest of the population, which has always been as diverse.

Well apparently, the Jews are conspiring to wipe out the white race, so white nationalist need to preserve their race and make sure it remains the majority. This is genuinely what they believe, I kid you not.

Most of my family was killed by the Nazis in the ovens in Poland, Germany and other countries who were members of the Axis and not the Allies. To go back in time over 75 years to a different time in our country's history means we have not grown or changed in all these years. Why have we not learned from the hatred we spread so many years ago?
Because the US has not faced the negative consequences of that hatred. As a society, it gained from the conflict. Germany lost a lot; Germany remembers. The US reaped rewards when it finally did something after standing by for so long. They got to be the heroes and get the loot, after they reacted to being attacked at Pearl Harbor. It wasn't a fight of ideology.

Yes, the father's decision was absolutely right on, as difficult and painful as it must have been for him and the rest of the family. Young people need to understand that their actions have consequences. Unfortunately, the present poor excuse for a US government doesn't understand that, either -- especially the inhabitant of the WH.

You're assuming that this is the first thing the father has ever done about it. That he has not already spoken, reasoned, fought with his son about it. Where is the blame on the fact that the son - a grown man! - decided to participate in fascist rallies? He chose to do this. He's not a kid who wasn't taught better. As for making an impact - his son is probably past having an impact made on him, if he doesn't wake up with that. What the public statement did do, however, is send a message that nazis are standing to lose things because of their hate. I think they've been forgetting that. It's called consequences.

While the bible is a very bad parenting guide - I mean, god let his son get crucified, not quite a good example to follow - there is little better to teach children about consequences than letting them reap said consequences.

I as well support the dad. He told it like it is. I as a father would do the same. However, both groups are wrong. Bringing down the statues of history is an ISiS thing. Regardless of what the statues stand for.It is important that the generations that follow know the good and the bad of our past.
Lets see the son makes a joke about "us fascists" and the lib father doesnt take this kid out to the woodshed or how about taking him by the ear to the nearest computer and show him images of Musollinis atrocities and say thats what fascists produce.. or if he is so appalled why didnt he say something when his kid uttered that "joke" This guy and family did what libs do . Which is dont do anything to prevent something nooo say how outraged you are after it happens. i.e. illegal immigration = MS-13
I wish Mr Tefft had left the door open for his son to return when he finally renounces his throughly hateful and ignorant views. You can bar the door & shun a person but if you really desire true change - you must offer an alternative safe haven.
I think that is just what the father has done. Read the father's statement. He offers the son comfort and a return to the family but only after the son renounces his hateful and hurtful ways. I feel sorry for the family and can only hope the son finds his way home.

Just because it's referred to it as such, doesn't mean it is. Like people calling things reverse racism when that doesn't even exist. What a great father! So what he is basically saying is this. I can't raise my son, so here world he is your problem now! Why even have a f*****g kid in the first place if you're this f*****g stupid lol!?!??!
I suppose unless his son was trying to indoctrinate relatives at gatherings, I think it's weird that his father disowned him and weird that he made this public. Load More Replies...No. Being gay or LBTQ is what you are, it's part of your genetic make up. You can't change it because it's simply you. Being a vile racist is something you choose to be. A decision you make, and one that you could decide to change because it's just a choice. Disowning someone because they choose to hate and have brought that hate on others is NOT the same as disowning someone because their sexual preference differs from yours.

Additionally, white people getting killed in South Africa has absolutely nothing to do with nazi protests promoting hate and violence against anyone who's not white in the US. He's misdirecting.

Looking at some of these comments, it might just make it on the next future New York Best Seller's list.
I suppose he's tried to talk with him on multiple occasions so what do I know? but alienating him is only going to push him into the arms of the crazies.
What?? Just throwing in random buzzwords, are we?

BLM basically just wants white people, and especially police officers, to stop killing black people just because they have the opportunity. So the difference is that HIS movement literally advocates hate and violence, and BLM is literally against hate and violence. How is that a difficult concept?

I was told once that a job vacancy in one of our leading insurance companies could only be filled by a black, disabled, south african born woman... We call this BEE (Black Economic Empowerment) but really it is just reverse apartheid. All that said, I am not sure what it has to do with “pro-White activist” in the USA...

A decision you make, and one that you could decide to change because it's just a choice. Disowning someone because they choose to hate and have brought that hate on others is NOT the same as disowning someone because their sexual preference differs from yours.
