The paradox of being a grown up is how very poorly prepared we often are for the adult world. Just think of the last time you called your dad to check on that suspicious blinking light on your car’s dash panel. Or the last time you asked your mom how to remove a wine stain from that new shirt you just bought. Speaking of the latter, I've lost count of how many perfectly fine pieces of clothing I ruined in my life just because I didn’t know how to wash, dry and take care of them. If you feel me, pull your seat closer.

Welcome to the amazing corner of Reddit named “Cool Guides” that’s dedicated to educating its whopping 2.8M members in know-how about virtually all existing things. Check out Bored Panda’s previous feature on this subreddit here.

This time, we’re taking a look into practical and seriously useful cool clothing guides that are basically saving our phone bill and dignity of being a responsible adult who has control in life. From doing laundry like a pro to the best ways to iron a dress shirt, you can thank us later!

It is sad when you dig into it and find how much of your thinking is dictated by marketers. Diamonds, meals, clothes, music and on.

I think it's frightening how much comfort determines our thinking, otherwise you would know that the colors of children's clothing were not an invention of the merchants, but had a centuries-old tradition. only for boys was pink...the little red of the blood....for girls blue like that of the virgin mary.

It is not that ‘parents didn’t see the point in focusing on gender until the child expressed an interest in it’. It is that clothes were handed down between siblings, relatives, and generations. This is revisionism.

Thank you, I was going to write about that as well. They didn't keep a boy in a dress until he expressed an interest in being a boy, at the age of 3 was when it was customary to have the child in male get up. Many would be sized for their first suit or just pants.

A couple centuries ago, among the well to do, pink was absolutely for boys.

When I was around 5/6 my great grandpa showed a picture of himself in a dress with "Nelly Olsen" curls . He said that's me when I was a little girl. Confused the heck out of me.

In 1870, there were 1,100,000 American babies born. In 1970, there were about triple that number of births, 3,740,000! The panel with "fewer kids, fewer clothes" is really misleading because even though individual families were smaller, the population had grown a lot. Maybe clothing makers just wanted to make even more money.

Ultra orthodox and Israeli aren’t interchangeable. Israelis as a culture aren’t inherently religious. And no one expect non religious Jews or non Jews refer to us religious Jews as Ultra Orthodox. But thanks for the chuckle. Oh, and not all Orthdodox sects wear Streimels. When we talk about longevity of clothing, we inevitably end up in much more important subject matter, which is clothing circularity. A circular economy for fashion creates better products and services for customers, contributes to a resilient and thriving fashion industry, and regenerates the environment. It prioritizes the rights and equity of everyone involved in the fashion industry, and will create new opportunities for growth that are distributed, diverse, and inclusive.

it's also worth looking at how the used shoes have worn. Is there more wear on the inside edge or the outside edge or is the other shoe more worn. It can indicate posture problems or that the legs may be of different lengths. Before my knee surgery, the other shoe wore out faster on the inside edge. Now there is no more uneven wear. With surgery, they moved my kneecap seven millimeters lower and I became a "balanced" person. Oh, and the arch of the feet always gets lower with time or because of being overweight or because of pregnancies.

I recommend finding someone who knows how to properly knows how to use a Brannock device, which is the foot measurement device. See if they know what it’s called. See if they know what to do with that arrow shaped side on the with the arch, it should be nestled around the “bunion “ bone. This tells you the right length; most people are wearing too short a shoe and the support is all in the wrong place. Most people have narrow to medium feet; they think they have wide feet as that bone is in the wrong place so it pinches. On the outer side of the device determines your width; with the bone in the right place, push the flat side up to the foot. There’s an arrow there that will tell you your width. Where you toes are on the device isn’t muck relative; our mothers checked the toe for growing space. De Castro said that while there are many ways to make your clothes wearable for longer, maintenance and how you carry them and how you wash them is super important. “Try not to wash them too much because that damages the fiber. Try to understand the properties of the material so you wash your clothes correctly.”

Moreover, according to de Castro, washing is unnecessary most of the time and the rest of the time, refreshing and spot cleaning if there’s a stain is enough.

And when it comes to bras, the wearer's figure would also be a factor: larger ladies will often find sweat accumulating more in certain places so want to change our bras frequently.

This one is really stupid. Wash it when it smells or when it obviously looks dirty! It's that simple! Plus: This way it is more environment-friendly, saves you from a lot of house work and your clothes - surprise - will last way longer.

Yes. I think in the last few decades a lot of people in western culture have learned to wash too often. Probably through advertising. So that we can buy detergent. And clothes, because they break down more quickly due to frequent washing. Similar to taking a shower. Taking a shower every day is bad and unhealthy for the skin and its natural protective shield.

What type of formal dress is being washed? And I rarely wash formal attire. If something gets on it, I have it dry cleaned, otherwise, it get refreshed, steamed and stored in a garment bag until the next use.

Actually no. Slk is an extremely delicate fabric and it's nor recommended to wash it in hot water. So, if you wear a silk garment for a long time or you sweat in it, it would be hard to wash it thoroughly.

It depends where you live. People sweat here in Texas a lot. All over. You have to wash your clothes daily. You may not smell your own oder but believe me everyone else does. There have been plenty of times where clothes are changed and put in the hamper after work if you are going out for the evening. Please bath too. In this day and time with Covid and SARS and other illnesses you need to wash. I agree with formal wear being dry cleaned and bagged until you wear it again. And coats get washed as they need it. Just get a wiff of your hamper. You'll get it.

According to the co-founder of Fashion Revolution, our unwanted clothes will inevitably end up burdening the economy somewhere else, potentially in Africa or Chile or other countries we already been exploiting for hundreds of years. “So maintaining our clothes in good stay is incredibly important. And you don’t have to be very tidy, you can still be as messy as you want. The point is understanding that clothing longevity is the first step towards circularity.”

Oxblood ( which now gets called "burgundy") is best with navy. In fact, it's a very versatile color. You can wear it with anything brown or earth toned and it goes well with gray (but not black). You can be well dressed with three pairs of shoes in black, brown, and burgundy. Tan is hard to keep clean, and navy shoes on men are just not popular for some reason.

Flip flops are called thongs in Australia, and gumshoes are usually known as Converse :) Trainers are either runners or sneakers. Pumps are just called heels or highheels. Chelsea boots look like what we would call work boots or Blundstones (even if not that brand), or if they have them are called steel caps, though often work boots will look like the army boots too. Also, no mention of Uggs?

I went shopping this afternoon for a long sleeved t-shirt with a crew neck. Did I come home with one? No, I didn’t because things described as crew neck are anything but. The necklines are so wide. What is wrong with you manufacturers? Another problem is the length of sleeves. The chubbier you are does not mean your arms are longer except manufacturers think the opposite.

While this is a useful chart, for a lot of people this would require custom tailoring. Having a tall torso and short legs, if I find a shirt that tucks in properly it's going to have extra room in it.

If you have the money to spare getting your shirt and suit tailored is a great idea. It can make a cheap 100 to 200 suit look like a designer suit. Tailor down the road from me will do it for $50 in most cases

If your shoulders are wider than your hips and you have a belly even with or slimmer than your chest look for something that says "fitted" or "athletic fit" if your shoulders are about the same as your hips or you have a bigger belly look for classic or relaxed fit. A quality shirt should give you chest or shoulder and neck measurements so find the one that closest matches those two. Avoid dress shirts that just come in small medium large etc. Too much variation person to person for that to work with this style of shirt

School always made us wear shirts with the collar too tight. Probably because there was only boy's ones available for both genders, unless you spent a lot more money. Plus teenagers grow fast.

Firefighters will commonly put on their turnout boots and pants at the start of their shift, then stand by their spot on the truck and take them off. When there is a call, all they have to do is step into their boots (through their pant legs, as shown in the bottom picture) and then step onto the truck. Bonus points for leaving helmet, coat, and tank on their seat on the truck.

Black-Tie is only Semi-formal. White-Tie is fully formal. Furthermore, a Dinner Jacket with Black-Tie (Tuxedo for the Americans) is only appropriate for an evening event - it should not be worn before 18:00. Prior to then, one should wear morning dress

Suppose it isn't called for much anymore, but there is a step more formal than black tie called white tie. If I remember correctly that requires tuxedo with tails, very specific style of shirt, and a white bow tie. Much more limited on acceptable hats too

I just went to a 60th that said on the invitation 'wear black &/or white only. Weird mix of people in smart casual/semi formal and people in football (AFL collingwood) jerseys. I thought it was great, because everyone did wear what they were comfortable in.

No, no, no. Owners of boobs, please check out the subreddit abrathatfits. Measuring boobs correctly is very different from this chart here. And also, do NOT add inches or centimeters to your underbust, because you will end up with a bra that doesn't fit properly.

I used to work in the lingerie department of a major department store. This is NOT the way to get an accurate bra size. Also keep in mind that not all brands fit the same.

    StrangeOne

3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Even when you find out your measurements, very rarely do you find a bra made for you. Seems the larger the band size, the larger the cup size the bras come in. You can only adjust so much, but adjusting also alters how the bra sits and it won't fit the way it should.

    Lillian Swaim
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

This one is garbage. Why would you wear a bra to measure for a bra? Also it's easier than all this, it's underbust inch = band, then bust inches-band inches= letter. A=1 in difference, B= 2 in difference, etc. Then again all the brands have different rules. See r/brathatfits even then it's not going to work because all bodies are different and screw you if you have small ribcage because no one sells under 32in bands

Unpopular Opinion - please don't read if you are easily offended: I have observed that the average American adult is still too traumatized by high school to develop their own style as an adult. In high school being different could and did get you ostracized. So, if you want to develop your own style as an adult it is important to first eliminate any and all jeans from your wardrobe. Look around you; find somebody (other than me) who is not wearing jeans. Jeans, in my opinion, are a symbol of conformity, a uniform. Also, they are cold in winter (unlike wool, silk blends), hot is summer (unlike alpaca, wool/linen blends); shitty front pockets and shallow back pockets that don't button so pick-pockets have an easier time.

What if my adult style includes jeans as a conscious choice? I live in a climate where they are comfortable pretty much year round. I find the right ones comfortable. I don't carry much in my pockets, I find ones that have pockets that will accommodate what I do carry. To me, not wearing something because other people do is not developing your own style.

100% poly is NOT odor resistant in my experience. Quite the opposite.

Agree. Polyester makes you sweat and stink a lot more than natural fibers. They show less the typical sweat stain though.

I find it hard to believe the retail stores take in half the profit. The manufacturer only making 5% profit doesn't seem like a feasible business model.

Wow. If this is accurate, the retailer could sell the pair for $62.50 and still make 20% profit. (12.5 / 62.5 = 0.20)

Asymetrical is usually different length front and back hems, like the bottom of the mermaid or right and left side different. Plus there is no standard 'wedding dress' it is often a mermaid, princess-line etc

I don't buy brand name stuff, so not owned most of these. I did get a few pairs of converse as hand me downs which was cool. Also, Uggs were originally Australian, America just bought the name.
