The memes in today's collection are a great way to take your mind off the Monday blues, but if you're scrolling because Monday genuinely has you feeling a little miserable, you're certainly not alone. So, are the Monday blues actually a real thing, or are we all just collectively annoyed that the weekend is over? Research suggests there's more to it than simply not being a morning person. A 2024 survey by Genius Consultants, conducted among more than 1,700 employees, found that over 65% felt overburdened by their current work structure, while 78% described their workplaces as harsh environments involving factors such as peer pressure and expectations from colleagues and management. The survey also found that more than 45% of respondents experienced anxiety on Sunday evenings.

And it's not just one survey pointing toward a connection between Monday mornings and workplace stress. A 2024 study published in Psychological Reports looked specifically at the factors behind Monday blues among 181 employees in medium- and top-level management positions across different industries in Mumbai. The researchers identified three major factors associated with the experience: motivation to work, the work environment, and work stress. Their analysis found that work stress was directly associated with stronger Monday blues, while greater motivation and a more positive work environment were associated with fewer feelings of Monday blues. In other words, sometimes the problem isn't Monday itself—it's what Monday represents when you're heading back into a stressful job.

That brings us to the bigger issue: workplace stress. In Cheers to Monday: The Surprisingly Simple Method to Lead and Live with Less Stress and More Joy, leadership expert Amy Leneker describes five different types of workplace stress. The idea is that stress isn't always one giant, mysterious feeling of being overwhelmed. Sometimes, figuring out exactly what's bothering you can make it easier to understand why you're feeling so drained in the first place.

Schedule stress is probably the easiest one to recognize. It's what happens when there simply aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done. Maybe you have three meetings before lunch, 47 unread emails waiting for you, a presentation due by 3 p.m., and your manager has just added another “quick” task to the list. By the time you finally finish one thing, you've somehow created three more things to worry about. When Monday starts with a calendar that already looks like a game of Tetris, it's not difficult to understand why your enthusiasm for the week disappears pretty quickly. Then there's suspense stress, which comes from uncertainty and anticipation. This is the kind of stress you feel when you're waiting for your boss to respond to an important email, wondering whether a project will be approved, or sitting through a meeting where everyone keeps saying, “We'll know more soon.”

Social stress comes from the people around you. Maybe you have a coworker who constantly creates unnecessary drama, a manager who makes every interaction feel like an interrogation, or a client who somehow manages to turn a five-minute conversation into an argument. Even when the actual work isn't particularly difficult, dealing with tense relationships can leave you exhausted before you've even started tackling your to-do list. And unfortunately, you can't always solve this kind of stress by simply putting your headphones on and pretending everyone else has disappeared.

Sudden stress is the workplace equivalent of someone shouting “We have a problem!” just as you're about to leave for lunch. It's the unexpected emergency, technical disaster, angry customer, last-minute request, or project that suddenly catches fire and demands your attention immediately. One minute you're calmly working through your morning, and the next you're scrambling to fix something that wasn't even on your radar five minutes earlier. These situations can be especially exhausting because you don't have time to mentally prepare.

Finally, there's system stress, which is bigger than any single task or difficult interaction. This can come from problems built into the way an organization operates, such as inefficient processes, poor communication, unrealistic expectations, power imbalances, or workplace policies that consistently make people's jobs harder. You can be incredibly organized and motivated and still feel worn down when the system around you keeps creating unnecessary obstacles. Leneker's framework emphasizes that recognizing which type of stress you're dealing with is an important first step toward figuring out how to respond to it.

So why can Monday make all of this feel particularly overwhelming? Research published in Human Relations found that employees working a traditional Monday-to-Friday schedule reported greater job stress and lower job satisfaction at the beginning of the workweek. One explanation offered by the researchers is that a stressful event on Friday can feel easier to deal with because the weekend is just around the corner. On Monday, however, the same stressful event can feel heavier because there's an entire workweek ahead before the next opportunity to recover.

Sorry for your loss or Sorry about your loss

Of course, that doesn't mean everyone who feels miserable on a Monday has a serious workplace problem. Sometimes you're simply tired, you had a great weekend, or your bed feels unusually comfortable when the alarm goes off. But if that dread shows up every week, it may be worth paying attention to what is actually causing it. Is your schedule impossible? Are you dealing with a difficult colleague? Are you constantly waiting for answers? Or are you simply no longer enjoying the work you're doing? Identifying the source can be more useful than simply telling yourself to “cheer up.”

And if you're looking for ways to make Mondays feel a little more manageable, small changes can help. Calm suggests starting the week with activities that support your wellbeing, such as meditation or exercise, while also taking time to reflect on what is actually contributing to your Monday blues. Planning something enjoyable can also give you a reason to look forward to the day, whether that's meeting a friend for coffee, going for a walk, reading a book, or making time for a hobby you enjoy.

It means it is too heavy for the baggage staff to lift...

It can also help to change the way you think about the start of the week. Instead of treating Monday as the day that ruins your weekend, you could try viewing it as a fresh start—a chance to tackle one small goal, make progress on something you've been putting off, or simply get through the day without expecting yourself to accomplish everything at once. And sometimes, a little harmless scrolling is perfectly fine too. You don't have to solve your entire relationship with Monday before lunchtime.

Which brings us back to today's memes. Sometimes the best way to survive a particularly uninspiring Monday is to take five minutes, grab your coffee, and look at something completely unrelated to your inbox. So, Pandas, if you're already counting down to Friday, take a little break and keep scrolling. Hopefully, these memes will make your Monday feel just a tiny bit better.
