On September 16, 2026, Emmy Rossum appeared on an episode of the Pretty Tough podcast, hosted by former tennis star Maria Sharapova.
The actress recently starred in the television series Furious, where she plays FBI agent Alice Black. The series was renewed for a second season in August 2026.
While discussing her work on the new series, Rossum also reflected on her time working on Shameless. The American adaptation of the British comedy-drama starred Rossum as Fiona Gallagher, the impulsive eldest Gallagher sibling.
During the conversation, Rossum revealed that dating became tricky because of the frequent nud*ty involving her character on the show.
“All of the guys that I would go out with had preconceived notions of who I was or how I was se*ua*ly. It was totally bizarre,” she said.
She recalled once going on a date with a man who aspired to become president but worried that dating someone who had been “exposed” on television could affect his campaign.
She added, “I was like, ‘This is an insane conversation to have.’”

Rossum’s comments drew mixed reactions online, with some fans questioning the need for intimate scenes in films and TV shows.
On X, several users argued that an actor’s onscreen persona can easily be confused with their real personality, with viewers sometimes struggling to separate fiction from reality. Others claimed such scenes were entirely unnecessary.
“Case in point as to why these scenes are useless and off-putting,” one person said.
A second wrote, “The real issue is how Hollywood uses nud*ty as a character shortcut. Would men face the same ‘preconceived notions’ for similar scenes?”
Meanwhile, some users criticized Rossum’s comments, pointing to her decision to film the scenes and her financial success from the show.
“Yeah, they didn’t get those preconceived notions from your character on the show. They got it from the fact that you were willing to film them,” a third user added.
A few others also questioned Rossum’s account of how the intimate scenes affected her dating life, noting that she was married for much of her time on the show.
Shameless premiered in 2011, and Rossum began dating writer-director Sam Esmail in 2013. They married in 2017 and have two children together.

“That was quite a drastic measure, but there weren’t any coordinators. So I used ink,” she told HuffPost UK in July 2026.
Earlier this month, Aubrey Plaza also drew attention to Hollywood’s approach to intimate scenes. In a resurfaced interview, the actress recalled an unscripted moment she was asked to perform while filming a racy scene with Robert De Niro.
The moment prompted some fans to question whether clear boundaries were in place during filming.
