Packaging, packaging, PACKAGING! Ugh, it gets on our nerves so much when companies use far too much packaging for their products. ‘Excessive’ doesn’t even cut it when you look at all the plastic, paper, and bubble wrap needed for a single tiny thing. Meanwhile, the Environment’s sitting in the corner, weeping, wondering what it did wrong to deserve this and why companies don’t change their outdated business models.

Some packaging is so horrifyingly unnecessary, it gets shamed on the r/EgregiousPackaging subreddit, a place that shows that excess is far from the positive thing that some customers are led to believe. Scroll down to see the very worst offenders and let us know in the comments what the very worst example was that you’ve seen with your own two eyes, Pandas.

When you’re done with this list, you can find more fuel for your outrage by reading these two Bored Panda articles about excessive packaging right here, as well as here.

If it's similar to how it is over here: they don't. During secondary school I used to work for a company that did mobile phone wholesale (I think, I'm not native so not exactly sure if it's the right word, but we basically had a warehouse full of mobiles, chargers, gadgets etc and send them out both to companies as well as individuals). The company had a "flatrate contract" with two parcel services, so no matter how many boxes we sent out in one day, they'd pay the same.

Shippers do this because very small packages are always stolen. I have rec'd a single microchip in a box big enough for a television. The bigger the box the less chance of it being stolen at the shipping point.

I agree that it is a wasteful way to send an item but I wonder if it helps to reduce theft and loss? In that a small box may suggest that the contents are valuable and it would be easy to steal instead of deliver. Also a smaller package is more likely to get lost than a big package?

Complete waste when they could have shipped it out in a FedEx extra small envelope instead. This happens multiple times a week. It infuriates me every single time.

More like these companies lie about everything. They all lie. Lie about prices, lie about being environmentally friendly, lie about anything and everything to get us to buy stuff we truly don't even need in the 1st place. Honestly these companies are only half of the problem. It's us the consumer steadily buying this stuff up that is the other half of the problem. It won't stop until we realize most of this stuff is materialistic and we don't need it to exist and live. These companies know our weaknesses more than we do. It's true, I'm afraid.

The r/EgregiousPackaging online community is fairly new. Founded in early 2019, it will be celebrating its 3rd birthday on January 16, 2022. In that time, the group has grown to 16.3k.

A while back, I spoke to four experts about packaging, plastic, business, and recycling. They went in-depth with Bored Panda about the reasons why companies actually focus on having more packaging than we might think is necessary, and highlighted what we as consumers can do to affect their decision-making process.

Graham Forbes, Greenpeace's Global Project Leader for the Plastic-Free-Future, told Bored Panda that companies have convinced people that they can use something once, for a few minutes, and then simply throw it away. “The problem is, we know now that there is no such thing as ‘away,’” he said.

1 turtle gets a straw up its nose and now everyone seems to think stoping using plastic straws will save the world. Its not like 10% of ocean pollution is microplastics, pieces so tiny some cant be seen with the naked eye, or that the textile industry is one of the biggest polluters. The straw thing is like conserving water by shutting off the tap while brushing your teeth. Honestly trying to reduce single use plastics isnt bad in and of itself, the problem is that people go "ok i no longer use plastic straws so now i feel like im making a difference and wont worry about it further" its a feel good solution that doesent actually have a big benefit overall. For waste reduction to be effective it has to be comprehensive, starting from the manufacturers. And yeah, if you wanna tackle 1 individual product, plastic bags are the way to go not straws.

Paper straws are trash with their own environmental implications anyway. I use plastic straws when I need to but I also have glass ones I try to use. It’s fine. I think people should do what they can but in a practical way. Being vegan is a bigger deal for the environment than anything else I could do and I’ll be damned if I let some omnivore tell me shít about a straw tbh.

Honestly to my mind ordering s**t online to prevent environmental pollution and saving the world is the complete opposite of preventing environmental pollution and saving the world. I bet most of this stuff is produces in the far east, shipped by enourmous ships over the oceans, then shipped by trucks over endless highways and autobahns, put into a big storage unit, then sold online (amazon?), wrapped into plastic and sh**t and moved around by trucks from other shipping companies to end up at your home... does anyone think this is environmental friendly?

“Less than 10 percent of the plastic waste ever made has actually been recycled, with the vast majority ending up in our oceans, landfills, or incinerated—polluting communities around the globe,” Forbes, from Greenpeace, warned.

“Companies are still stuck in this outdated business model that uses unnecessary packaging and puts the onus on the consumer to clean it up. It is up to all of us to demand accountability from these companies that continue to churn out throwaway plastic. It's time to demand systems of reuse rather than polluting throwaway packaging,” he said.

“By utilizing reusable bottles, bags, or containers, we can start to build the systems that we want to see from large companies. Ultimately, large-scale systemic change will depend on companies like Nestle, Coca-Cola, and PepsiCo changing their business models to reject throwaway plastic packaging. By rejecting throwaway culture, we can move them in a better direction quickly,” Forbes explained to Bored Panda.

Meanwhile, Kara Pochiro from the Association of Plastic Recyclers noted that “packaging often has a variety of uses that the general consumer does not realize such as protection and preservation.” In short, there are clear reasons why companies add a lot of packaging that we might find egregiously excessive. However, this doesn’t mean that we can’t change how companies operate. By changing our spending habits, we can affect the business models that corporations go for.

One day there won't be any animals from COMPLETELY EGOTISTICAL CRUDS who trophy hunt. There won't be anything left in the ocean because the world uses the ocean for a dump. Animals die just so they provide some aphrodisiac effect on them Not even!!!! Sun bears live in iron cages with permanent holes in their abdomen for their bile. Talk about cruel. I saw a special on tigers on Japan to are so abused I couldn't believe my eyes. One tiger minus teeth and chained almost to the floor for the amusement and pictures of these ?????. I think the special was with Lisa Ling. Murdering elephants and rhinos for their tusks and horns.Goose and duck down have their feathers and down ripped from their live bodies, not just once. Four maybe five times. Foxes in Finland kept in metal cages walking on wire, no light are slaughtered for their fur. year

I see what they did there (with the title). This is sad, but typical of chocolates, and you could make a reasonable argument that the container to product size isn't that egregious compared to even just normal stuff like juice boxes or blister wrap. Sometimes that plastic is probably compostable PLA too, though I wish they would label it better.

This one isn't dumb. Like they have to be separated so they aren't damaged in transport. It's better than individually wrapped. As far as packaging goes, this isn't the worst. You literally need to have space in the products.

The CEO of Plastics for Change, Andrew Almack highlighted the fact that getting rid of plastics in packaging would require a lot of effort on the part of companies.

“Removing unnecessary plastic requires companies to redefine their supply chain. They have to do RnD while keeping in mind challenges like the visual appeal of product packaging, the durability of alternatives, sustained supply of alternatives, costing, and manufacturing,” he told Bored Panda that this may be part of the reason why some companies don’t make the switch.

This hurts my heart to see… the unfortunate waste that shipping causes! So like when you order from Amazon, etc. instead of going to a store to shop, there’s more shipping waste that happens. Stores get pallets of items in and stock the shelves. So it’s only 1 box of a certain item that has a quality to it, you pick it up and take it to the register and say for it. But when you order something it has to be boxes and bubble wrapped… 🤔🤔🤔🤔

Assuming much?! I know of several cases where people ordered several similar items from Amazon in one order, checked the option to group order, and yet the orders were sent out with each individual item separately packaged and shipped - which then all arrived together, once even on the same day! Something is definitely malfunctioning logistically over at Amazon, whether just stupid decisions or else worker sabotage... Either way, I'm boycotting Amazon from now on, they need to start treating their workers decently!

And it probably never would’ve bothered me before COVID, so I don’t have a problem with this.

I understand the ears of corn - it's to prevent the a-holes who somehow think it's alright to shuck the corn right there and just throw the husks onto the floor. I've seen it in the wild, and the "lady" wasn't doing to check the ears for quality or anything. Just one after the other... shuck, shuck, shuck - corn in the bag, husks on the floor. Shuck that!

Was that USA? They do that where I live, but the stores provide barrels for the shucks. I don't shuck mine because the corn stays fresh longer, and I microwave in the shuck because it's easier than boiling.

“It is important for customers to purchase and use products made by businesses that focus on sustainability. When people start buying from eco-friendly businesses, the demand for such goods would increase and ignite other players to cater to this trend which could be done by a simple change in current company policies,” Almack said that customers can be a force for change.

“Being more conscious about our throwaway culture is where one should surely start. Simple changes to eliminate single-use plastic go a long way: avoid gum and plasticware, reuse storage containers and use razors with replaceable blades,” Almack explained what we can do as individuals to help the environment. Every small bit of effort matters, even if it’s the large multinational companies who hold most of the power to affect change.

Reminds me when I got my EGO Nexus power station. It came in a larger box with air fill. The product box was shipping quality already. The larger box (because not full) got smashed and deformed during delivery; and was awkward to carry because it wasn't balanced at all.

In Poland a lot of small stores sell bread in slices, so you go to the store, ask for (for example) six slices of bread and lady is putting to the bag the six slices you asked for. Why can't it be just something normal?

It looks more like a pump bottle that has a plunger moving upwards from the bottom and a dispenser withdrawing the product. This package isn't too ergonomic as there's still plenty of product left when it doesn't have enough pressure to withdraw and also requires lots of plastic and a whole mechanism to dispense

    Deja Katz

It’s not a pump bottle, it’s Nivea skin energy moisturising face gel for men. It comes in a big jar with a screw cap, for this miserly amount that you get within the false compartment. So that is indeed a destructive example of misleading and excessive packaging.

I'll be in the minority, I'm sure, but eh I'm kind of used to it. This marketing shindig is going on everywhere. You finally think you find some affordable skincare and then you get curious why the ml/oz info doesn't fix the box. You start digging - and there we go! And don't even get me about night creams! Sell a tiny amount of (usually) the same product for a jacked up price? No, thank you.

I love the body shop because a lot of their lotions and creams come in containers where you scoop it out and so you can actually get every last bit and properly wash and recycle it. They've designed their products, as much as possible, to at least be easily recyclable.

Actually this is a fantastic idea. We already have agencies regulating package labeling, should have something that decides the weight of packaging for the weight of certain products. The thing is though, the companies will then pour in a ton of money and effort trying to circumvent that too. Honestly if companies spent half the energy they do on scamming consumers instead on growing their business, wed be living in post scarcity magical space communism by now. Its like that guy who tries so hard to avoid doing work that he spends way more energy than it would have taken just to do the work....

These boxes are big because per regulations they need to put ingredients, allergy concerns, warnings, poison control stuff, dosage information and other stuff on that box. When I order a CD from Amazon, it usually arrives with no padding and a broken plastic case, things like Covid masks, books, and other things that don't need padding come full of the stuff. Last week I got two flat pieces of cardboard stuck together with nothing inside. When I went online to find out what had been "delivered", I found that a book was supposed to be in between the two pieces of cardboard. The customer service agent was very nice and asked if I'd like "another" book or a refund. Since I hadn't received the book the first time I thought that was an odd phrasing, but requested that they send the book I'd requested and paid for already. It arrived this time in a box with generous (and unneeded) padding and is excellent, "The Paris Library."

If it's properly sealed, but not from going bad. Is it really that wrong to buy a whole avocado (I mean I don't know any single person who would eat avocado as it is) and do some nice spread or smoothie or something? These are expensive (at least in my country), the packaging and processing will probably be even pricier and the plastic is unnecessary. But that's why here, in this topic, aren't we? :-D

When avocados became trendy here in the UK a few years ago, the incidences of 'avocado related A&E visits' sky-rocketed - people all over the country had no idea how to de-pip or skin avos and ended up slicing themselves 🤦‍♀️🤣. Maybe this was thought to be a resolution? (I'm not agreeing with the packaging; just saying.)

Actually search the partnumber and you see these are Boeing aircraft parts, that come with a certification. Putting them in a tub together almost certainly ruins that certification (and shelflife)... The fact that you must log in to get a price also tell you they're several $ each. E.g. https://www.acinv.com/E-Cart/Inventory/Details?Partnumber=66-2955-4&Subp=1 Soo... red herring/ this doesn't belong in this topic.

There’s a reason for this. It makes them easy to steam individually. They also sell potatoes unwrapped if you don’t need a single steamable potato. I used to buy these in college. I know of what I speak. Yes you can cook a potato without it but the plastic prevents the steam from escaping and overcooking the potato and hardening the skin. Also it cooks it faster by containing the steam so there’s no guesswork when it comes to how long to microwave it.

There's nothing wrong with this. The ones wrapped in plastic are so you could just throw them in the microwave for a baked potato. Which takes 5 minutes versus wrapping it in foil and putting it in the oven For an hour

Sephora is ridiculous, I went there this weekend to buy makeup for my wedding and by makeup I mean foundation, powder and mascara. I had a gift card for 30 bucks from my birthday back in August. Literally still spent 60+ dollars for THREE items. Never again.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER buy "flea drops" except from your vet. Dogs die from these "over the counter" crap. My BIL, I TOLD HIM AND TOLD HIM TO GET FLEA MEDS FROM THE VET. THE BASTARD BOUGHT IT AT WALMART'S. The dog died the next day from the wildly over strength flea drops.

No, seriously, only buy the topical flea meds from the vet. There have been so many reports of burns, seizures, and deaths from generic brands. (Hartz is a big problem). Personal experience, I bought some at the supermarket and within a few minutes of applying the cats were scratching like crazy. Luckily washing the cats thoroughly helped alleviate the problem.

Well, at least the tic tacs are packaged in rigid plastic boxes which can be repurposed for a variety of uses, rather than in small plastic bags which would just be thrown away after use, and the small boxes are stuffed in a large rigid plastic box which would also be useful for storing, so I am not sure that this counts as excessive packaging...

I'm going to stick up for this one. It's what they do (http://www.regaloteas.com/Gift-Collection.php). They're those fancy-schmancy pyramid tea bags in different flavours, so packing them together would ruin the taste. They're also packaged for gift-giving. Not a big fan, still killing the environment, but not scammers as so many others on the list are.

If it was just little boxes in a big box, I think I would totally agree but the thought of 16 little plastic bags in boxes in a box gets me (also because the smaller the individual pieces of plastic are, the harder they are to meaningfully recycle)

this is common at restaurants. We used to have a tradition here where restaurants had a sweet ("Candy") bowl at the exit for you to help yourself. Our health department did a study and found they were infested with urine from men who do not practice basic hygiene in the bathroom. So they made a law that if you have a sweet bowl, each sweet has to be individually wrapped. Fortuantely, most restauarnts do not do this anymore, but they still give you individually wrapped sweets with the bill ("check"). Still daft, but not as bad.

Amazon not only has it's own delivery fleet, they have contracts with major couriers. I doubt they lose any money on shipping.

I believe the warehouse software tells the packers which box to use, which actually is pretty sensible. Although it doesn't seem to have worked well in this case.

well, amazon makes sure that they dont damage packages by calculating the necessary size of boxes to fill up the cargo holds of the trucks. but this is rather impractical

Corn tastes better if you shuck it right before you cook it. DON'T shuck your corn in the store! Shucking your corn in the store pretty much guarantees you're going to have starchy, unappetizing corn. Doing it right before cooking means sweeter, more delicious corn. From an engineering perspective, you can now see the corn. Which is a significant improvement in that visibility dimension.

Ever roasted corn with husk still intact? Well not roasting more like steaming it in it's own natural moisture. I also microwave corn with husk on. It just tastes better that way. Try it you won't regret.

What is the recycle number on it? Some frozen meals I avoid, because they aren't commonly recycled. 1,2,5 can be recycled. 1 and two are commonly recycled (rather recyclable), 5 less so and 4, is uncommonly accepted. Of course I am talking about the States.

Hopefully they've changed their policy since 2019 (the best before date) as the black plastic can be recycled but the sorters have a hard time reading the black. Because of this, most of it just ends up in a landfill.

Why do they only come in twos? Now I have to reconsider my go to veggie burger, which has similar packaging.

OK I'm going to be the devil's advocate here. I buy those a lot. I have tremors in my hands and arms, and often cut myself cutting vegetables. Precut veges are the great for my condition. If it wasn't for that Yes, it is a waste of packaging.

My grandma and my dad both buy these due to hand tremors. So I feel for you. There is no need to shame precut veggies and fruits. I buy precut onions due to allergies from cutting them up.

I’ve cut the ends of two fingers (just the ends and they grew back) using a mandolin slicer because I’m disabled. Oh boy, apple blood pie! Now I have my daughter (32) cut things up when she visits. It’s embarrassing and discouraging so I can see the point, but c’mon…

Because people are lazy, there'll always be a market for it. Can't really package raw onion any other way.

pre cut food is often made for disabled people. this would be very useful to someone with limited motion, tics or tremors, or limb differences. if you don't know why it was made, it's not for you.

I actually bought tomatoes sold like this a while ago because it was all that was available. I found the tomatoes lasted a lot longer and now I reuse the clam shell packaging for the loose tomatoes I buy. It's stupid packaging, but I'm making use of it.

Yes! I recently discovered this! I think it's partly the "space" add partly that they aren't putting any pressure on each other. I bought a pack 2 months ago and they are still good!

During covid, my go to eggs went from cardboard to plastic clamshell with an extra cover to hold the top of the eggs. I hated them, not just for the extra plastic layer, but because I had to remove the carton from the fridge and lift two lids to get an egg.

For apples this will speed up the ripening process dramatically if it's fully sealed.

I'm not sure I fully understand this one. Is each blister pack a single day's medication? This looks like how nearly all medications are shipped - how is this extraneous packaging? The extra space between pills, designed to be easier to handle for people with mobility issues? Also, the manufacturers don't know you have a condition - your GP and pharmacist might.

If they're manufacturing the medication for a condition, they clearly know the limitations a patient may have. Blister packs are awful. A small pill bottle is much better.

Doesn't your pharmacist help with this problem? Over here they will take them out and put them in a pillbox for you if you have problems doing it yourself

I bloody hate blister packaging for meds. I have arthritis and chronic pain, and it's really hard to get one tiny pill out of that tough plastic without crumbling the pill.

I hear you. My arthritis makes me avoid blister packs as much as I can. Most of the time, you have to peel off the paper before you can push the pill through the foil. What a hassle. I've even seen some that have cut my fingers because the edges are so sharp. I have just learned to use scissors.

This may have to do with the pharmacy you go through. Some pharmacies put each dose of medication that is needed in a single pack. It separated by the day of the week and the time of day you take it. Should always ask your pharmacist for accommodations.

No wonder they are called BLISTER PACKS...you get skin cuts and blisters from trying to get to the meds. Hate them.
