Early 20th Century Images Of Native Americans

The pictorial history of Native Americans, from the Southern United States to the Pacific Northwest, and Alaska provides a fascinating insight into the beauty and majestic presence of Native American peoples, their culture, and the men and women that fought to preserve their way of life.

Traditionally few images are known in the context of this narrative. The images taken by Edward Curtis of Native Americans, are what is most familiar to most of us in known and familiar pictorial histories of these cultures; however, a unique and unexpected journey takes the form of vintage postcards, real photograph postcards, and other types of related ephemera that show another less filtered and less careful presentation of images related to early American history, and the indigenous peoples of North America, The Pacific Northwest, and Alaska.

Some of these images were first presented in the context of photographs and then transferred to the postcard format or related format. These pictures, all of which are in an old postcard format shown here, represent a series of engaging themes and subjects, in an old black and white color contrast that adds to the pictorial charm and historic quality of these postcards

These images present the format of landscapes, portraits, gatherings, and groups across a range of Native American, Pacific Northwest, and Native Alaskan peoples.
