I read a book about this, written by Hingson (he dictated it to his wife). Several firefighters offered to carry him down the stairwell, but he refused and insisted on waiting in line with everyone else.

People who use service dogs typically have a disability that limits their ability to perform activities of daily living. For example, a person who is blind may rely on a guide dog to help them get around. A person with a mobility impairment may use a service dog to help them with tasks such as opening doors or picking up things that they have dropped.
Therefore, service dogs can provide invaluable assistance to people with disabilities. They can help increase independence and self-confidence, and provide companionship.

I lived in a regional city in Australia & read a newspaper report about one of these dogs working on a nearby farm. The owner said that when the dog needed to visit a vet clinic for vaccinations etc it became so stressed at leaving the flock behind that they had to take a sheep along with them in the back of their 4WD

I've never had as good a human friend as I have had dog friends. If the chemistry is there, and it usually is, the bond you can form is, for lack of a better term, soul deep. The best thing to come out of social evolution is by far our relationship with dogs. Molly was a real hero and a real example of the love and devotion dogs have to offer. A special pup! Between the public access manners and the specialized skills required for a particular disability, based on the International Association of Assistance Dog Partners (IAADP) guidelines, training a service dog requires a minimum of 120 hours of training for at least 6 months (depending on the dog and the required skills). During that time, dogs also need to work a minimum of 30 hours in public settings to help them generalize their skills and teach them to be responsive and unobtrusive in a variety of public places.

This is awesome! We will get our puppy in November and the breeder (a vet couple) visits a seniors' home with her dogs once a week. She also brings a puppy from time to time and said, how much the people appreciate her dogs. She found out that especially older men enjoy the time with the dogs, because they are often lonely and rarely experience affection. This inspired me, so we agreed to find a "therapy-suitable" puppy for me that I can take to work someday (I am a social worker).

Former Search & Rescue K9 handler here. We train our dogs to think that their job is the most fun they could ever have. That's why the dogs go to it with such enthusiasm. Sometimes the encouragement and praise is a bit much for the public or media to see as they don't feel we are respectful of the victim. We try to keep family and friends and media away from search scenes, especially if the outcome is expected to be bad. We still need to praise the dogs for doing their work.

In case you wonder, it takes a special dog to be a service dog. Many dogs can be trained to pick up objects, alert to changes in glucose levels, help with balance, interrupt repetitive patterns and offer comfort. Not every dog, however, can handle going out in public. Going to a mall may not seem like a big challenge, but the crowd, the sounds, the shiny surfaces, the carts, the elevators, etc. can be very stressful to many dogs.

A year or two ago, a k-9 from my town named Hando died to take down an armed man in a swat raid. The funeral service included a procession that took 5 minutes to pass my house, and had cops from 2 states and more that 20 cities, including Las Vegas, which is 6 hours away.

Depressed 9/11 Rescue Dogs
Finding survivors was dangerous and thankless work. The rescue crews suffered limitations, like dangerous and smoldering debris, and tight access. To aid in their efforts, some employed dogs to help. After the collapse, they pulled only 23 people from the debris, 15 of them rescue workers who'd compromised their own safety. Rescuers removed the last survivor 27 hours after the collapse.
Rescue dogs were finding so few living survivors, they would become noticeably depressed, thinking they weren't doing a good job. Handlers would hide in the rubble to allow the dogs to "find" them, boosting their spirit and morale.

I read something similar in a book about a police dog- it was fiction but I wonder if it was based on this. The dog, Ellie, went to help after a hurricane and the same thing happened- she thought she was doing something wrong, so her owner had another officer hide so she could find someone living.

This is how training works in any capacity. If the dog continues to fail, eventually they stop trying. You have to give them an occasional guaranteed chance of success.

A good candidate to be a service dog is both a confident and social dog. A dog that is easy going and likes to greet every new person. For a shy and anxious dog, being out in public could be a source of stress and anxiety. Just like people, when dogs are anxious, they are more likely to be on the lookout for potential threats. They might bark, growl or even bite if they don’t feel safe. Additionally, a dog concerned about his/her own safety will not be able to focus on the handler and provide the needed assistance.

Staffies get such bad press cos twatbaskets get them and make them act really badly. I have a rescue one, had her 10 tears now, and she's the most loving,laid back dog you may ever meet. The cats adore her and would snuggle up to her when they were kittens. She has never gone for any of the older cats either and they knew she was a good one. When we had her sister from another Mr, she would let the pup suckle,even though she couldn't feed her. Unfortunately, like what happens with a lot of these beauts, she has arthritis, benign wart-like tumours, to top it off, she now has dementia. She still has a little play from time to time, but it breaks your heart watching her. Some would say, why not euthanize her, one day, but not while she's still reasonably happy. It will be a sad day when the time is right. I'd have another Staffy in a heart beat.

My mom had a little black dog with a similar appearance whose name was Teddy. She got him in 1960 and when I was born 9 years later he was so jealous he would bite my heels when I was crawling! We had him until he crossed the rainbow bridge in 1976. Miss you, sweet Teddy.

My husband has had Tonic clonic seizures for 50 years. Even with medication he would still have seizures. Terrible injuries over the years. Brass lamp fell on his chest when he was studying at University burnt down to the bone on his chest. 3 months in the burns unit. Suggested we get a dog no no no he said so I got a dog. That was 7 years ago, hasn't had a seizure in 6 1/2 years. So now we have 2 dogs best medicine ever no prescription needed. Hopefully your seizures will decrease. Your pupper is adorable

My cousins' cousin (on their mom's side; we're cousins on their dad's) has been blind since birth and lived near where our post office was. One day I saw her with her guide dog and said hi and asked to pat her. She said yes, so I did. A few months later I see her with a different dog and ask what happened. "I had to get a new dog," she tells me. "The other one couldn't see." I was a bit taken aback. "What?" She says, "Yes, she couldn't see. She walked me into the middle of the veld last month and I didn't know where I was!!!" Tl;dr: My blind cousin's dog was also blind!

If the former partner is going to work with another dog, their old dog sometimes has to be rehomed, because they can become really depressed at being left behind. If they're used to being with their person all day, being at home alone can be stressful too. If the retired working dog can't adjust, moving them to a new home, especially one where someone is home most of the day, can give them a happier retirement.

I love and miss you boys.. we also had a black chow named ebony and an albino chow named spike, a cream girl named sable and another black chow named Tiffany.. they were all good babies.. and I miss them so much.. rip babies.. fyi these dogs were owned over a 32 yr period.. and not a day goes by that we don't miss them..

OMG he looks like my baby girl LuLu who I miss so much every single day she is my best friend my furry daughter and that is until one day she became mysteriously ill she was poisoned by my neighbor and it's progressed so quickly.. I lost her within a week..one day she's happy to go lucky my silly baby girl,the next day she won't eat..two days later she's gone blind and within a week lost half of her body weight...my neighbor gave her rat poison or something.. I almost went to jail for threatening to poison my neighbor after this I told her you'll get what's coming I will kill you for this.. I almost did honestly if I didn't have my other fur babies and my daughters I would have killed her for hurting my baby girl.. rip Lulu I miss you so much babygirl 💖💗💕

This was wholesome! Thank you for posting. My father had a service dog too. He couldn't hear the phone or the door bell or if someone was talking to him without looking at him, so the dog would bark to let him know and run to and fro to let him know where to go or where to look at.

I was wondering, how do they pick different sniffer dogs to sniff out different stuff they're good at? I mean, how to decide who sniffs drugs and who sniffs polar bear poop or bees?
