“I Left Early, With My Money And My Sanity”: Single Woman Refuses To Pay For Cousin’s Wedding
Reddit user ScarcityGlum647 has spent the last few years away from her family, so when she came to her home state, the woman attended a gathering where relatives met to catch up and reminisce about old times. However, there were also plans for the future: one of her cousins was preparing to get married. Only the news (and invitation) were presented together with a not-so-subtle request for extra help with the wedding costs.

Nowadays, the average wedding cost is $33,000, so, understandably, many couples are looking for ways to increase their budget. The expense list usually looks something like this:
- Wedding dress: $2,100
- Cake: $540
- Hair and makeup: $290
- Officiant: $240
- DJ: $1,700
- Live band: $4,500
- Food: $80 per person
- Alcohol: $2,800
- Venue: $12,200
- Flowers: $2,700
- Invitations: $520
- Wedding bands: $2,900
- Photographer: $2,900
- Videographer: $2,300
Spending so much money can feel stressful. In fact, a 2023 survey discovered that 70% of engaged Americans feel like they’re facing money challenges during the planning process. (And it doesn’t help that 55% of married and engaged Americans find it difficult to have a serious money talk with their partner, either.)
You can ask your guests for financial gifts, but it needs to be done right

According to etiquette expert Mariah Grumet, it’s perfectly okay to request cash for your wedding—it’s how you do it that really matters. “If you are requesting monetary gifts for your wedding, there is a tasteful way to go about it so it’s a win-win situation for everyone,” Grumet said.
The one place where your preference for cash gifts should never be spelled out, however, is in the invitation. “A monetary gift (or any gift for that matter!) should not be requested on the actual wedding invitation,” highlighted Grumet.
Instead, include the address of your wedding website on an insert card within your overall stationery suite and explain your registry preferences there. “There’s nothing wrong with not wanting physical gifts or a traditional registry, but it’s important to communicate that in the best way possible.”
Couples should also let their parents, siblings, and close friends know that they’d prefer cash and encourage them to tactfully spread the word. Chances are, guests will ask them what they should get the newlyweds.
Cash or a check can feel impersonal, so letting guests know where the money will go is critical to help them feel more connected to the two of you and your plans. If you’re in the middle of a big project, like renovating your home or moving across the country, just tell the guests about it! Bonus tip: adding a more personal touch with the story of how the project got started, how far along you are, and even the pitfalls you may have faced along the way can make them more inclined to answer.
However, confronting someone face-to-face and putting them on the line in front of others (especially, when you haven’t seen them for years) is probably not the way to go…
That $33,000 we mentioned earlier is the average, and it only takes a few basics to get married. There’s always the option of scaling down.
The story has sparked plenty of reactions

That's why we've decided that, if ever we won a sizeable amount of money, no one would know about it. Not family, not friends, not casual acquintances. Money can bring out the worst in people.
Same. Of course, the most deserving amongst them would be taken care of, and we already know they won’t tell anyone about it because they know they’d be hit up for a handout by the freeloaders too.
Load More Replies...I asked my single friend if she could buy me a Hermes Birkin but she said no. I’m considering firing her!
You should! She's not even using her uterus properly so according to the bylaws, your friend owes you *checks list* one Birkin bag!
Load More Replies...There's a saying in Spanish "que tal las navidades, bien o en familia?". Was Xmas good or with family?
Again, the poll question at the end of the article is missing the obvious and best answer : "It's delusional and stupid."
Oh yeah, I forgot. There's a REASON why we are distant cousins and you just added another to the list...!!! -_- @ladyrara and I are in agreement. Jeeeeez!!!
No, asking for money to fund your wedding is NOT socially acceptable. If you can't afford the kind of wedding you want, adjust your expectations. You're not being crowned queen of the universe. You'll be just as married if you get it done at city hall or in someone's backyard. Don't be tacky! Fund your own lifestyle!
Entitled bridezilla much? NO I can not and will not be paying for any part of your wedding. And you have a lot of nerve for even asking people that you don't even know to help pay for it. You your b/f and your parents can pay for it.
OK, cuz, let's look at this.. How much did you and or your family contribute toward my education? Zero, hmm. OK, how much did you kick in toward the down payment so I could buy my house? Nothing, welp, I'm looking at the math and I'm seeing a goose egg. So glad we talked, good luck!
I would respond, "So, do you always try to grift people you barely know to finance your life?
I would kick her in the shin and steal her wallet while she's down. She's not married yet. She don't need it.
Load More Replies...And OP didn't laugh in the cousin's face and tell her to go f**k herself, why?
I would ask her to fund my travels, as she has wedding and all that stuff, so she is not going anywhere anytime soon .... also husband could chip in as well :D seriously tho, how do you even think about asking someone you haven´t seen in years for this? Like, if you do, I am not sure if you are mentaly able to raise a child
I married my second (and current) wife on June 3rd 2020 during Covid. The ceremony was held in a small park in the middle of downtown Saint Paul with masks, social distancing, the whole enchilada. The judge even set the forms on the ground and walked out of range before we could pick them up to sign them. I think the total cost was around $500 and it was one of the happiest days of my life, right behind the birth of my son. Even the judge was happy to be there since 2020 was turning out to be a s******w for pretty much everyone. Apparently officiating a wedding is a welcome diversion from sitting in a courtroom listening to a bunch of people in masks argue with each other.
