Someone Says “Depression Is A Choice”, And Andy Richter’s Response Is Brilliant

Earlier this year we lost several beloved figures to suicide such as Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain, and Avicii to name a few, re-starting a worldwide conversation on mental illness. However, despite the far from new dialogue surrounding depression many people still seem woefully uninformed on how it works and how it is treated. One of the most common uneducated ideas about depression is that it is something that can be willed away if you just try hard enough, and thanks to the internet those who have actually struggled with the disease have a platform to dispell this myth.

A mental illness isn't a choice anyone would want to make. But being ignorant, rude and acting like an a*****e is a choice.

@ Anthony (A*****e) Talak - Yes vegan as a choice, I've made that choice and I can tell you that. But let me ask you this: when did you choose to be straight? Because as a queer person, I sure as hell wouldn't 'choose' getting yelled at, beaten up, or threatened with rape just to be 'special.'

Depression and Anxiety can hit anyone, anywhere, at any time. For multiple reasons, or sometimes no reason at all. A chemical imbalance in the brain, not a "choice". Those who have never experienced the extremes of this illness have no right to judge and give half-assed "advice". Leave it to the Professionals who know what they are talking about.

people who've never experienced depression don't understand it. They confuse it with being sad or being in a bad mood (and there's nothing wrong with that BTW). Thanks to Richter--the last thing a depressed person needs to hear is that it's his/her fault

I struggle a lot with the question of choice, telling myself I'm lazy, pathetic, and believing I'm not trying hard enough to deal with it. And, I'm a high-functioning depressive, go figure.

I really hate stupid people. I had to "break up" w/ my best friend after she refused to stop saying things to me along the lines that depression was a choice and suicide was just a selfish thing. She knew very well that I myself struggled w/ it AND had just lost a close family member to suicide!!! On the other hand she constantly posts on FB about how soldiers need all the help we can give them to avoid their suicides! My loved one was a veteran! It was all I could do not to post some screenshots of her comments to me! I'm in a good place now. Losing her was a great choice!

Once you see a pattern in someone's behaviour, you can't unsee it. I'm glad losing her was a good choice. I've cut friends out of my life, and it makes me feel guilty but I know it was the only choice I had.

Suffering from major depression for ore than 40 years I can only say that anyone that proclames that depression is a choice is an illiterate person who is not aware of the crippling effects this has on us. And many times it's a fatal illness. Maybe "suicide" rings a bell?

Actually..I get what Paul is saying. The MeToo movement sparked a lot of women to come forward about their abuses and ill-treatment at the hands of men, but I found there was a feminist movement too that claimed to be sexually harassed only to find out they were upset because a man held the door open for them (assumed the man thought she was too weak to open the door on her own.) And just like any diagnosis, people will claim to be part of it because they don't truly understand what the definition of depression is. They assume they are depressed because things aren't going right 2 or 3 days out of the month when they don't realize that people with depression fight a constant battle. It's like the girls that scream rape when all they really want to do is get back at an ex...they're damaging the girls that really are victims from being believed.

"Depression is a choice/Why are you depressed, your life is so great" is like telling someone with asthma "Why do you have asthma, there's plenty of air in here!" People forget that perpetuating stereotypes behind mental illnesses can actually f*****g kill people.

Depression is in no way a choice. Why would ANYONE CHOOSE to feel this way???! It is a mental illness. It is like saying being white or black is a choice, being short or tall is a choice, breathing is a choice. I guarantee the person who says depression is a choice has never suffered from it the way that those who have it have. I have suffered from depression, anxiety, and living inside my head for almost 20 yrs.... I would NEVERchoose this

When I think about it I must have had problems for 45 years - most of my life. I can clearly recall my first terrifying panic attack aged 9, hysterically crying because I felt so frightened and couldnt explain to my mum why, because I didnt know.. Can vividly remember age 15 going to bed and many nights wishing not to wake up the next day. You dont make "choices" at that age.

Depression can be paralyzing. Sometimes it's hard to get yourself out of bed, let alone leave the house. And I have been called "lazy" for that.

"Depression is a choice"- ri-i-i-ght, because deep down we are all dirty masochists who chose to feel bad. Tomorrow when I wake up I'll just decide to feel happy and ecstatic- problem solved. Man I wished someone had told me that sooner. /sarcasm

I'd rather say, taking up w/ depression and choosing life over suicide, over and over again even though it seems unbearable sometimes, is a decision. A really tough one at times. If you're lucky not to be affected just don't judge. Ever.

Not only choosing life over suicide, but choosing to *live*. Not one day after another, but one minute, one hour after another. The struggle is real, it's tough. It can be unbearable sometimes, yes. But I'm learning that we can be strong.
