During Lockdown, I Asked My Followers To Send Me Their Photos And Crocheted Their Portraits (33 Pics)
I am Katika, a contemporary artist and the creator of the crochet art project "Quarantine." During six years of being a crochet artist, I have been exploring the themes of human connection. When the pandemic started and a sizable part of the global population began to isolate themselves to stay safe, I felt the overwhelming need to work.
I opened a call for crochet portraits. Having received many requests for the portraits, I came up with the idea of the "Quarantine" project. This is a collection of portraits of people who are staying strong and hopeful during the pandemic and wish to honor their loved ones and themselves through art. Those are faces of humanity which in the end, I believe, can overcome any catastrophe.
I started the project on March 25 and completed it on May 17 of 2020. During the project's 54 working days, 34 portraits were created, with each of them taking up to 11-13 hours to make. It means that overall, I was crocheting for about 410 hours. When I wasn't crocheting, I spun and dyed yarn, sketched, and worked on other concepts inspired by the project. It was a huge endeavor and immensely important learning experience, which played a magnificent role in my evolution as an artist.
Check out my previous post with crochet portraits of famous people. Please stay healthy and hopeful.
