Pysanky, Aka Ukrainian Easter Eggs, Made By My Mother
They are not only Ukrainian, the tradition is Eastern European, Romania also has it and many other Eastern European countries.
These are just the shells, the egg is raw and the inside is blown out through a small hole. People save these as long as they last!
Came here to say this! My family always did Easter eggs this way because my grandmother learned the shell technique from a Polish neighbor. We kept them and bought them out every Easter. I didn’t know people used hard bodied eggs until one year I packed the hard boiled egg I decorated in Girl Scouts with our other eggs.
Load More Replies...I learned how to do these years ago. It's a soothing practice. And you do not crack them. They are not for eating.
are they hard boiled or raw?
Load More Replies...Yes you do! We all deserve to be surrounded by art, beauty, talent, and perfection. It helps us all to appreciate the beauty in the world... so we can celebrate it, share it, and work/strive to add to our own beauty back to it. While I do understand your sentiment, please don't devalue yourself like that. You are perfection too.
Load More Replies...My uncle was bombardier on a B-17G in Europe during WW-II. Most of his crew were Polish or Ukrainian. He sent a telegram home to say they were painting pysanky for Easter 1945. They painted up their bombs that they dropped on Berlin on Easter Sunday morning.
ohhhhhh i've made these before! it's pretty difficult and revolves around burning wax, dye, and delicate eggs
My Beautiful Easter Eggs
Green is my favorite color too. And the yellows are so pretty. These eggs are oddly soothing. (Grün ist auch meine Lieblingsfarbe. Und die Gelbs sind so hübsch. Diese Eier sind seltsam beruhigend.)

My Mom Is Homophobic And Forced Me To Decorate Eggs This Year. So I Made My Eggs Different Pride Flags. She Has No Idea
@Ganja4Eva: Easter isn’t for queers??? Also, would you ridicule God for creating LGBTs or do you believe that they were born straight but then decided to join a group that receives hatred and abuse?
Why is this thread arguing about a pagan tradition Christians adopted to help convert the pagans.
marinamartinez, why shove everything “god” to the world? Or are you too busy shoving religion down people's throats to realize your hypocrisy? I would reply to your comment, but I am unable. Sorry. Have a prideful day!
The same question. Why shove your... how to say... "preferences" to other people? No one cares about your habits, so do not try to get attention.
Load More Replies...When I was a kid, I looked forward to dying Easter eggs all year long. My mother would hard boil dozens of eggs for my brothers and I, then would set up an extravagant spread of various colors, stickers, crayons, paint brushes and more to ensure we could create whatever beautiful visions we could imagine on our festive eggs. We weren’t too interested in eating the eggs, but we loved showing off our masterpieces and creating a few that we would send rolling down the driveway to race one another. Easter was never a huge holiday for myself or my family, but I’ll look back on the memories of decorating eggs with my brothers for the rest of my life.
Easter is a traditionally Christian holiday, so the entire world does not partake in the festivities, but it is widely celebrated in about 95 nations. According to Kwintessential, many countries around the world have various ways of celebrating, with chocolate eggs and Easter egg hunts being common in the United States and the United Kingdom. As a kid, I was always lucky to receive an Easter basket with chocolates, and I would run around the yard searching for eggs filled with candy and, if I was really lucky, I might even find $5. Hot-cross buns are also popular in the UK on Good Friday, a delicious tradition I was happy to partake in when living there.
This Is How We Dye Easter Eggs In Serbia Using Only Natural Ingredients
We wrap the leaves around the eggs with old nylon stockings and tie them with yarn. For dying, we use onion skin.
My grandmother used to dye onions skin eggs! She'd save up the skins for a long time in advance, so she had a lot, and the color was really nice. She didn't used other materials to make designs on them like this person did, but just the natural variations in the eggshells would make subtle, random patterns. I ought to start saving up onion skins now, and do some next year.
Yep, that is the way those from the post were done... Don't forget the stockings! 😅

Easter Eggs Hand-Painted By My Mom. Happy Easter From Germany
Are you from the Lausitz? This looks like eggs made by the "Sorben" people.
Those eggs in the picture have holes with little strings poking out. So, they are "empty" and re used every year. [I clean the raw eggs to get rid of the date stamp, then poke two holes (up: smaller, down: bigger) in them, blow the white and yolk out (scrambled eggs), blow water inside and shake so that the rest & skin comes out. Dry it. When dry: paint (I do Acryl paint). Dry again. Take half of a match and knot a loop of string in its middle, Push the match part through the upper hole off the egg.] PS: I usually keep 1 egg per year.
Load More Replies...Intricate, pretty and time consuming. Did Mom still have time to prepare that holiday meal that the family loves so much or does she use amphetamines?
They're gorgeous, but who has time to do that? One egg per child! Lol.
I hope those are either fake eggs or blown cause those are wayyyyy too beautiful to destroy and eat.
My Work Had An Easter Egg Contest And This Was My Submission
“In France the church bells do not ring for three days from Good Friday as a token of mourning for the crucified Christ,” Kwintessential explains. “Easter morning children watch the sky to see the bells ‘fly back from Rome’, while their elder family members hide chocolate eggs for them to find.”
Meanwhile, “Italians celebrate with a Paschal feast of roasted baby lamb and a crown-shaped bread studded with coloured candied eggs,” the team at Kwintessential goes on to note. “Dramatic processions take place including ‘devils’ rampaging around Prizzi and locals in Trapani carrying life-sized wooden sculptures through the streets for 10 hours. Easter processions are also spectacular in Spain, with special celebrations of note taking place in Valladolid, Malaga and Seville.”
Beautiful Hand-Painted Easter Eggs
I wonder what kind of paint they used... acrylic, watercolor, inks? I'm trying to use watercolor on a couple eggs I boiled yesterday. The only thing I've learned so far is to let them come to room temperature first to avoid the condensation on the shells fresh out of the refrigerator... I'll try to let you know how it works.

wow, it seems like a lot of slavic countries have similar traditions and designs for these. they're all really pretty! edit: wow 40 upvotes! i need to comment more often.
We, here in the US have terrible Easter eggs compare to the gorgeous creations in Europe. I mean we just hold them in a dye bath…
Pysanky is alive and well in the USA. But yes, there is a lot more to it than dipping eggs in dye. The designs are mostly traditional and have meaning- that is why they show up over and over.

“In Sweden, this time of year is called Påskdagen and is predominantly a secular holiday, celebrated with a meal of eggs, herring, and Jansson’s Temptation (potato, onion and pickled sardines baked in cream) and where children may dress up as ‘Easter witches’,” Kwintessential writes. “Meanwhile, close by in Norway, many use the holiday to read mystery books and watch deceptive series, calling it Paaskekrim or ‘Easter-Crime’.”
My Father's Ukrainian Easter Eggs Are Made From Emu Eggs. Banana For Scale
Those are beautiful! That’s one W I D E banana though, unless that’s just perspective
Emu eggs are just big. I think they might be slightly bigger than Aggressive Goose eggs, but I would have to see those next to a banana as well to judge.

I’m curious…do those gorgeous eggs keep? Or do they go bad after some time?
I don’t know about these, but when I make them, I poke a small hole in the bottom and drain the egg, so they keep forever!

We do them in Ukraine, too! One of the traditional ways of doing it - you dye the egg using natural dyes (onion peels, beetroot, etc) and scratch it with a needle. Those are called "shcryabanky"!
Dragon Egg I Made With Push Pins And Painted With Glitter Polish
“In Mexico, Easter celebrations involve two big observances, Semana Santa (Holy Week) and Pascua (Resurrection Sunday to the following Saturday),” Kwintessential shares. “Starting on Palm Sunday, Semana Santa sees Passion Plays take place and locals buy special elaborately woven palms from outside churches, before hanging them on their doors to ward off evil. Easter Sunday morning marks the start of Pascua, where great celebrations follow the morning service, with towns often having fêtes including stalls and even fairground rides.”
My Family Uses Natural Dyes And Leaves For Easter Eggs Each Year
Green is from spinach, yellow can be from kurkuma, purple beetroot and deep red from red onion skins. You put the natural dye (one of the above) in cold water add some winager and eggs at room temperature. Eggs have cover or other leave on them and tided with nylon stocking to jeep it in place. You boil it all together for about 15 minutes. Cooled and shine with vegetable oil.

If you’re curious why we dye Easter eggs in the first place, it turns out that the tradition goes back thousands of years. “There is evidence that the Trypillian culture that lived in Central Europe from 4,500 BC to 3,000 BC dyed eggs,” Melissa Locker at Southern Living writes. “Generally, historians seem to think that the custom got started when the ancient Persians, or Zoroastrians, painted eggs for Nowruz, or Persian New Year, according to The Kitchn. That custom continues today among some Persian families who dye eggs to mark Nowruz.”

Load More Replies...While we can’t know for sure exactly when Christians began dyeing Easter eggs, the tradition of drawing on eggs with wax and dye may have come from Ukraine in the 10th century, when Christianity spread there. “In the Greek Orthodox tradition, dyed red eggs have marked the occasion since Mary Magdalene went to visit the tomb of Jesus and discovered that he was no longer there and her snack basket of eggs turned bright red,” Locker explains.
My Easter Eggs, 2020. Patterns Were Carved Into The Shell By A Needle
We call those "shcryabaky" in Ukraine. Btw. did you use onion skins for coloring?
This was on Reddit three years ago, but I found your answer. This is what OP had to say: "I dyed the egg first - boil in red onion peel, and let it sit in the water for half hour until it's cooled down. And then the needle tip scratches off the dye :)"

Locker goes on to note that it wasn’t until the late 19th century that eggs became treats for children, “thanks in part to the Victorians who loved a good old tradition.” Their enthusiasm for historical fun “helped bring the art of dyeing Easter eggs into the modern era. Easter-egg hunts came next, and the White House got in on the fun, hosting the first annual Easter Egg Roll in 1878.”

Easter Egg Coloring With Ties
Google says you have to use silk, then you boil them in vinegar for a couple of mins
Load More Replies...does that really work, like boiling it while it is wrapped with fabric?
I was actually kinda wondering when this one was gonna turn up. Ties, especially ones from the 70s-80s, are a really good option for this one; the colors and patterns were really bold and bright, and a lot of them were polyester or nylon, which were not known for their colorfastness back then and couldn't be dry-cleaned, so stains were usually a sentence to the "Tie Graveyard" box at the back of the closet or attic.
I've done this too with meh results but mostly cause I'd blown out the eggs so it was hard to keep them submerged in the dye. ONLY SILK TIES WILL WORK FOR THIS METHOD!

My Easter Eggs. It's Not With The Usual Materials, But I Hope That's Ok
When I was little, we always blew some Easter eggs out, meaning getting rid of the yolk and white part through a hole. Then we would decorate them with markers. I continued the tradition with my son, using permanent markers, Sharpies, with my son. The Sharpies work great because they leave a nice sheen when they dry! Is this watercolors you are using? Eggsquisite!

My personal favorite is the xenomorph, but I'm a little curious as to what kind of eggs were utilized; wood, blown, 3D printed, ceramic, or papier mache...
You can simply use raw eggs and let them dry out. The eggshell is porous and allows moisture to evaporate as long as the egg is not cooked and you don't seal them with spray finish. They get lighter every day while they dry and after several weeks they're completely dried out. Or you can blow out the raw egs by making two tiny holes in them, one on top and one at the bottom, then blow into the top, the contents will then pour out at the bottom, you can use it for baking or scrambled eggs. You can then wash the eggshells and either paint them empty, you can seal the holes with some glue and toilet paper, or fill them with clay or plaster cast if you want to make them less breakable.

Load More Replies...I finally understood Easter eggs when I started attending an Eastern-rite church. They don't eat any meat during Lent (six weeks leading up to Easter)... but also no fish and no eggs, .... totally vegan. For the whole 40 days, not just Fridays. Well, you can choose when to kill the livestock, or when to fish. But you can't tell the chicken not to lay eggs. And since untreated eggs last a long, long time, by the time Lent is over, you've got a TON of eggs you've been saving. So when you finally break fast (breakfast? Get it?), you've got a TON of eggs. So for Easter breakfast, it's kinda totally natural to get a little egg-cited.
Wow. Overall, these are beautiful. Such artistry. Others are funny. I wish there was room for a description for the one from countries/heritages/naturally dyed. I know I can Google but would be neat to read their stories about their heritage and how they're made.
I guess I don't really understand this. Are most of these eggs hollowed out?
Can't say for all, but I know in my region of Europe, we just hard boil all the eggs in dye ingridients and eat them in the Next few days.
