It’s sad to admit that humanity still has a ways to go when it comes to respecting animal rights. Having a pet is a huge responsibility, and so it’s appropriate that there are laws and rights that explain how pets ought to be treated and taken care of.

Well, despite laws, rights, and just general human morality, this one couple is now facing charges for tying their dog to a backyard fence and then leaving to live in their new home in another state.

Meet Carter, a.k.a. Jon Snow, who was recently rescued from being tied to a fence in his own home

Meet Carter, the lovable husky pupper who looked like he had a forever home with 27-year-old Curtis Swan and 29-year-old Aaleyah Clay in Roselle, New Jersey.

Well, on December 4th, a wildlife sanctuary called the Popcorn Park Animal Refuge and shared some very sad news that Carter was brought into their Associated Humane Societies Newark facility with a severe neck wound.

Turns out, his owners decided to move houses. Well, more precisely, move entire states. And Carter was left behind. For five whole days, the pupper was completely neglected until an animal control officer was dispatched to investigate for a possibly abandoned dog in need of medical attention.

Turns out, Carter’s owners moved states and left him behind, promising they’ll come back

During this visit, the officer found that Carter, a young male husky, had a severe, infected open wound encircling a large portion of his neck, a product of being tied to the backyard fence; the officer then reported the matter to the Roselle Police Department.

An investigation was soon launched and led by Roselle Detective Ivan Romero. This is when they found out that the two owners had moved to their new home in Georgia five days before this. They apparently told the neighbor that they would eventually return for the dog, but a date was not specified.

Unfortunately, they never mentioned when they are coming back and when animal control came 5 days later, Carter already had a serious neck wound

According to the post, Carter, who was known as Jon Snow before the investigation, was taken to the Newark Branch of Associated Humane Societies of New Jersey where he underwent the medical treatment he desperately needed, and was later transferred to another shelter in South Jersey for further recovery.

The sanctuary also elaborated that Carter was getting daily laser therapy treatments on his neck wound and that he was also on medications for pain and infection. He is recovering nicely and is an amazing dog.

The neglect that Carter was subject to during these five days also called for criminal charges to be brought against Swan and Clay. An investigation is still underway and no specifics can be disclosed due to the fact that it’s an ongoing investigation, but the two face convictions of third-degree crimes against Carter that could lead to up to a 5-year sentence in state prison.

Animal Petitions featured this story in one of their petitions, in which they also explained that Carter will not be available for adoption until the case is settled, which is standard procedure.

An animal abuse investigation is underway, and the owners might face up to 5 years in state prison for this

This is how I got my second cat. Tenants abandoned her at a property I managed, after they moved out. She sat all alone with no food, no water, and no way out. I love her and can’t imagine my life without her. Those people deserve to be hungry and hopeless, the same position they put my beloved kitty in. People, most of the time, are literally trash. Sounds fûcked up, but it’s sincere. So many people are complete garbage. It’s way too common. Just LOOK at the life, fun, and personality in that dog’s eyes. To let that animal, or any animal, suffer, makes them horrible fùcking people. If you don’t care about animals, the creatures we are literally here to protect, then you’re garbage. Animals are citizens of earth, not tools, not slaves, not food, not even “pets.” They’re companions. They’re residents of this planet.

Left the dog tied up alone for 5 days and can expect up to a 5-year sentence in state prison. One year in prison for every day the dog is left tied up seems only fair (even better would be ten years for every day but I'll take what I can get)

Make part of the sentence that they have to wear a padlocked collar around their necks that would also be chained to their bunk in the cell.

F%$@ing people! Why do that??? Why leave them, throw them to a river, to a dumpster... It's so terrifying to admit u are a pice of sh1t to go to a shelter, give it to a friend, a relative, a perfect stranger, look into their eyes and say you can't have a pet anymore? Oh yeah, it's easier to let them die. I hope you are proud of yourselves and rott in hell.
