When you’re depressed, there are days when even getting out of bed can seem impossible. Meanwhile, tidying up and doing even the most basic chores can seem like insurmountable tasks.
It’s overwhelming. However, when some people do manage to make some progress on that front, they’re happy to share the results on the internet, hoping to inspire others. Bored Panda has collected some of the most motivating before-and-after pics of ‘depression rooms’ getting cleaned. Scroll down to take a peek.
Bored Panda wanted to learn more about the relationship between messy environments and our mental health, as well as how someone with depression might get started with cleaning, so we reached out to the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Andrew Kidd, a BACP member and therapist, was kind enough to shed some light on this. You'll find his insights below.
If you or someone you care about may be depressed, we urge you to reach out to your doctor or mental health specialist. Meanwhile, ask your loved ones for support. You’re never alone.

Keeping with positivity..... I'm proud of you! I know how hard this is. I have an entire house(large) that went to the wayside when mom died in 2016, best friend in 2019 and dad 2 years ago. I've started to dig my way out.....being disabled it makes it 1000 times worse. You have inspired me, along with all the others in this group. Your home is beautiful and I'm so glad you got there. I'm so proud of you and know how much effort that takes. The greatest thing is all the light you have let into your house.

Cleaned Depression Room
I know there are different variations of clean for everybody and IMHO this room has come a long way. They have made excellent progress but I think they still have some more cleaning to do. You're in the final stretch now or if you are satisfied where it's at now, that's okay too.

Cleaned My Tiny Depression Room
I often rearrange my bedroom furniture once I finally decide to clean my depression room, like this person did.
Great before and after shots. Sadly, my depression room is a depression house and I haven’t been able to summon up the energy to get it looking good yet. Then you get sad because it’s messy… vicious cycle.
I can't get motivated. It's depressing to walk into my house. It's depressing being in my house. It's depressing just thinking about cleaning it.
Load More Replies...I'm interested to know what people think. I am, like others here fighting to reclaim my small apartment, the only ones of these that gave me pause to think were the ones where someone - no doubt for the very best of reasons - had done all the work while the occupant of the room was out. I would be livid if I came home and someone had taken it upon themselves to decide what of my stuff was rubbish and what should be kept. Quite apart from that, the real therapy comes from having achieved it yourself, someone else doing it is no good. Good luck to all the others here that are still, like myself, climbing over stuff all the time. The strength and the desire will strike when the time is right, you can't force it. To those that made dismissive comments, I truly hope you never understand because it is not fun. In the meantime, please try to be a little kinder.
I've watched a lot of that show Hoarders. Throwing out someone else's stuff is a huge no no. They have to clean it themselves as part of the therapy. Losing control can set them back quite a bit.
Load More Replies...I keep waiting for this to happen to me. The feeling better and cleaning part, not the depression part. It's been so long now that I'm wondering if this is it, this is as good as it gets. Which is tolerable, I guess. I get the brief moments of happiness when I get home and the cats greet me (very me-oriented, needy cats, the monsters that *I* created 😄 they are very good boys and girl) or the loudmouth cat starts his crying to play with the wand + noodle. Otherwise it's just existing right now.
Talk to your doctor. Aside from just clinical depression, there are things like hashimoto's which can cause depression and exhaustion.
