Of course they do. Cats are smart, and they really want to be friends with us. You just have to get them to understand how to do so. It is easiest if you start when they come into your home first, and don't think, "oh that little kitten won't harm me when she scratches". One day it is not at little kitten but a big strong cat, that may hurt you seriously. I find, that the easiest way to teach them not to scratch is screaming when they do, even if it doesn't hurt very much. They hate that sound.
