For those not in the know, Demi Lovato is a singer, songwriter and actress, known being a prominent champion of positive body image, who also speaks openly and honestly about her own struggles with an eating disorder and mental health.
Adding to her journey of self-acceptance and refreshingly human and positive messages to her fans, Demi has made a video called “Demi Lovato, Unfiltered: A Pop Star Removes Her Makeup,” for Vogue as part of their American Women: Transformers series. Turning the traditional makeover on its head, Demi instead gets a makeunder, as she slowly strips away her makeup to reveal the beauty underneath.
“I think society tells us we need makeovers, but why can’t we embrace the beauty that we naturally have?” She told Vogue. However, that’s not to say that she doesn’t enjoy the glamor which comes as part of her job. “I love makeup. I love doing my hair; I have extensions, but there’s a time and a place for everything, and natural beauty needs to be celebrated.”
You could argue that for a young, beautiful millionaire, going natch and looking great with it comes quite a bit easier than it does for the average woman. Some commenters certainly didn’t buy it. For others however, she remains one of the few celebrities that people can really relate to as they follow her ups and downs on social media, where she strips bare her insecurities and urges her fans to embrace themselves as they are.
Scroll down to see Demi go from glam diva to girl-next-door, and completely own her bare beauty in the video below. Don’t forget to let us know what you think in the comments!
Singer, songwriter and actress Demi Lovato just filmed a short clip for Vogue
But this time instead of the full makeup that she usually comes with…
And a team of makeup artists helping her out…
To achieve results like this
…she did it all in reverse
After starting with full makeup, she sat in front of the camera and started to remove it
Here’s the clip itself
Some didn’t buy it though
But others loved it
I don't get this. Why is today considered "brave" not to wear make-up? She is 25 I did not even wear make-up at that age, I hardly use it now, and I am 45. What are we women "monsters" and "ugly" without all the paint? And what did she prove? That 25 year old person looks good without make up on? No point here, useless article. sorry.
The point is that celebrities always look glamorous with all their make up done but there are people who feel like they are too ugly or is just insecure of how they look. This video is trying to give the message that you should embrace your true self, your true skin. You make think yeah, this is not brave, she looks great even without make up, but there are people who don't feel that way, who might hate themselves for this.

Exactly thank you, I'm a girl but not everything we do is brave and courageous
Load More Replies...Yeah, She's pretty and looks great without all that makeup. And who knew she had cute freckles! However what struck me was how many products were needed to remove all that spackle. So think I'm more annoyed with how much perceived, potential landfill, waste was generated.
Aunt Messy, he/she didn't even use the word "toxic" though... They just said that it produces waste, dude, chill.
Load More Replies...SERIOUSLY? We're supposed to praise her for taking off her makeup? Most women do this every day of their life. This isn't some revolutionary feminist act here.
Make-up boosts self-esteem for me. Reason is simple; I have very light blue eyes with blonde lashes and thin lips. To use make-up is fun for me and makes me feel sexy. This doesn't mean though that I'd feel ugly or naked or non-female without it. Sometimes it's makeup, sometimes it's au naturelle and it's fine this way :)
As a dude I wear scruff and a hat. All we can do is hide as much of our heads as possible. Add some sunglasses in the summer and I'm handsomely hidden.
Load More Replies...If your called 'brave' for simply taking off makeup, then all the middle schoolers, at prom are 'brave' if they dont, and in elemetnrty school, EVERY girl is 'brave'?
In response to Mia Henderson, I am a red head with light eyelashes. Most days I only wear mascara but some days I'll go without it all together. I still go out and do things. I feel pretty with or without make up.
It is not about if she is beautiful without makeup or not. Heavy makeup is only part of her job. The red carpet look is just a theatre. And in the evening when she comes home under the makeup is a normal person. It is a message for me.
Wow... a beautiful young woman shows us she is beautiful and rich... How brave !
Sadly, so many young people think "stars" are so much prettier, more intelligent, and lead perfect lives. To put it bluntly, "Their s**t smells just as bad as everyone else's." If the average person's job was "looking good", we would all be spending 2 hours a day in a gym, eating only raw vegetables and lathering up our body in creams and lotions. That's not life; sadly someone who is 16 doesn't understand that and then feels inadequate and ugly.
The food part everyone should do, and you don't need anywhere near multi hours per day of exercise if the food part is well done. Moisturizing takes about 2 minutes, tops. Nothing is stopping you from doing all of these things, same with 16yr olds.
Load More Replies...Lovato is pretty with out make up on. She got a perfect skin so what's the big deal? When a woman who looks pretty without make up and has so flawless skin goes around and ''encourages'' the ''average'' ones says nothing to me. It's like a woman who has never problem with her weight tries to convince another woman who struggles for decades with it to have confidence. Like duh!!!
Some people look beautiful with or without makeup... some look very, very different when they have makeup on vs. when they do not. This young lady falls in the first category. And guess what? Good for her. Let's move on.
That shark video that was shown after the video was way more interesting!! LOL!
This is just an ad for Pond's face goop. Notice how they have the ad spot before the video? And how she's slathering/ misting herself with various products? I'm so tired of ads masquerading as female empowerment pieces.
All I saw was the pile of trash she made removing all that. Maybe consider reusable washcloths if you need to do that daily?
Yes... she can start her own landfiill with the pile of used whips. *smh*
Load More Replies...I think she is beautiful with and without make-up. I like this video because it shows today's girls that make-up is not what makes you beautiful. I have 3 young girls that we are trying to raise to be comfortable with how God created them. Tall/short/skinny/over weight/freckles/blotchy skin, it doesn't matter, we are all beautiful in our own way. There is so much hype with having long lashes, perfect skin, etc. I give her a lot of credit for doing this.
So, it's a bit of a teen novel and almost seems like a girl's book, not sure why I read it, but... Has anyone heard of an old series called Uglies? It's actually a strange sci-fi dystopian series about beauty and individuality, it's kind of interesting. :p

what's the big deal with all those make up free videos? Are people stupid enough to beleive that the people they see on tv or movies look like that when they get up in the morning?
Holy moly, *so* much make up. It's horrible when people have so much on you can smell it. I agree with the argument that's it's not at all brave. She's still pretty underneath but if I had millions of dollars and personal stylists, I'd probably look that good too.
wearing several loads of makeup makes your face grey with no life cause of no sunlight
It demolished me how much Demi used cotton balls and tissues! Why is not environmental protection being promoted against such waste? Was not it possible to wash the cosmetics just with water and some cleaning agent ?!
Well of course she looks great without makeup. She spends big money on skincare (just google her routine). This video hardly portrays a 'realistic' no-makeup face. Also, I'll be more impressed if she went without makeup for at least an entire day n appeared for public events rather than a heavily edited video.
Try the same thing with ellen degenerate and you will see your screen shatter!
Hmm, so full of self contradictions - a female complaining about how she has internalized the social oppression's demanded of female. . .then she feasts of it finding freedom in exploiting that which has oppressed her? Seems like denial on steroids. I continue to wonder why Hollywoodized females complain about the inequities that they themselves are helping to promote. . .we no longer know what females really look like because of the way these females choose to continue with their plasticized choices, voluminous make up, & wearing as little clothing as possible. The optics reflected to us show how they have bought into being a male defined sex symbol. In the doing so they show their limited creativity on the vast array of possibilities to be sensuous, beautiful & real.
Not gonna be a hater. I like her message...and her big smile at the end.
The only thing I could think of is HOW LONG IT MUST TAKE FOR HER TO REMOVE HER MAKE-UP!! WOW!!!!
I hate how so many people are like “Show me someone with acne” and stuff like that. It’s called taking care of your skin. Try it, it looks good. All she did was make some features emphasized. It’s simple. Now I get that some are not as lucky and don’t have nice thick eyebrows, long lashes, etc. But it’s okay. Stop putting others down because your jealous. Maybe instead of trying to hurt them, compliment them.
I just love how women b***h about other women for wearing or not wearing makeup. Don't you have any other problems in life? Just let everyone dress and paint themselves the way they feel it's right for them. Jeez...
Society is so strange to me... people should be proud of their natural look. :p Sometimes I can't help but think about what must have gone in the mind of people from long ago and how and why that all change when we invented these things that we did...
People in every culture and every society we have studied since the beginning of time have adorned themselves with makeup and tattoos and bones through the nose and plates through the lips and modifying the looks in many ways. If humans were satisfied with their "natural look" then none of this would occur. It is human nature to wish to adorn oneself. We paint our nails, we paint our faces (and not just for camouflage in hunting), we thread beads and bones through our hair, we have put scent and oils on our skin; we have ingested arsenic to appear whiter for heavens sake! In order to truly ponder these things you need to study the origins of man I think because that is truly when this all began. What she is doing in the video is getting all sorts of s**t from a lot of haughty folks here but the fact is she's just being human. She is being vulnerable and showing herself to people. Makeup can be a bit of an armor. It can be almost a second skin or a bit like clothing

Who the f**k cares?! Why is this a f*****g post?!? I take my make up off every single night. And I even go out of my home without it on *GASP!!!!* this post is garbage.
Why are you here then? Were you just looking for something to whine about?

Someone get that woman a facecloth for heaven's sake. Look how many face wipes she goes through in a day (or maybe more than once a day if she re-does her makeup). Those are going to lie in the landfill somewhere for decades (at least).
You can let go of your balls now. She doesn't give a rat's a*s what you think.
