40 Charming Cat Paintings By Henriëtte Ronner-Knip From More Than A Century Ago
Long before cats became the undisputed stars of the internet, Henriëtte Ronner-Knip was already documenting their curiosity and elegant beauty. Born in Amsterdam in 1821 into a family of artists, she learned to paint from her father, landscape painter Josephus Augustus Knip, and began exhibiting her work while still a teenager. After marrying Feico Ronner in 1850, she settled in Brussels, where she spent the rest of her life and built a successful career as an animal painter.
Cats, however, were not always her main subjects. Ronner-Knip initially painted landscapes, farm animals, and especially dogs, earning considerable recognition for her canine scenes before shifting her attention increasingly toward cats around the 1870s. The timing proved fortunate: domestic cats were becoming increasingly popular companions among Europe’s growing middle and upper classes, while Ronner-Knip’s detailed and affectionate depictions of them attracted collectors and even royal patrons. More than a century after Ronner-Knip passed away in 1909, these scenes still feel instantly recognizable to anyone who has lived with a cat. The interiors may belong to another era, but the suspicious stares, inconvenient naps, sudden bursts of chaos, and determination to investigate absolutely everything certainly do not.
