Being a maid of honor is supposed to be one of the great honors of female friendship. You stand beside your person on the most important day of her life and maybe hold her dress (or hair) in the bathroom. And at the end of the night you get to give a speech that makes everyone cry happy tears. It is a role built entirely on love and celebration.

A distressed maid of honor has been doing all of that, plus filling in for an absent groom at every single vendor meeting, calling out his lies to his face, and trying to figure out how to write a wedding speech about a man she considers a piece of trash. The wedding is at the end of the month, and he nearly cancelled it this week. She is running out of options, and the internet has a lot of thoughts.

The sunk-cost fallacy should never be an excuse, especially not with something as permanent as marriage

The lies in this story are worth examining through a scientific lens before anyone dismisses them as minor personality quirks. Research published in Nature Neuroscience found that small, self-serving deceptions physically change the brain over time. Each repeated lie reduces activity in the amygdala, the emotional centre responsible for the discomfort we feel when we do something wrong. The more you lie, the easier it gets!

As that discomfort fades, the threshold for larger lies drops accordingly. The man who blamed someone else for not having a ring, who lied about reaching out to the maid of honor, who sat next to his fiancée while his mother called to cancel the wedding and said nothing, is being evasive at first. But in the bigger picture, he is demonstrating a pattern that the neuroscience suggests will only get more entrenched over time, not less.

The bride’s reasoning for continuing, that they have come so far and it would be hard to start over, is what we call the sunk cost fallacy in romantic relationships. It is the tendency to stay in a situation not because it is good but because of the time, money, and emotional energy already invested. It is that little voice inside your head saying, “We have come this far; we might as well just do the thing.”

Habits and Mindsets suggest that overcoming it starts with recognising that past investments are already gone regardless of what happens next, seeking outside perspectives from people who can see the situation clearly, and redirecting focus toward what the future actually looks like rather than what has already been spent getting here. Her maid of honor has been providing that outside perspective for months. The bride is not quite ready to hear it yet.

The Wed identifies cold feet through a very specific checklist of behaviours. Sudden busyness, avoiding wedding conversations, physical withdrawal, making future plans that do not include the partner. Jay has ticked these boxes repeatedly, asked to postpone the wedding, had his mother call to cancel it, gone into overdraft debt trying to compensate for emotional unavailability, and is currently out of town for five weeks with the wedding at the end of the month. Someone get this man a pair of socks!
