When you read about something or see it on TV, the (lack of) context might leave you guessing — or even worse, misinterpreting — the details.

Luckily, r/HumanForScale solves that problem. Every picture on the subreddit comes with a body or two so that we, the viewers, can accurately gauge the dimensions of objects, whether they're wild animals, historical artefacts, or architectural wonders.

In a world where everyone wants your attention and misinformation spreads faster than ever, clarity is queen.

"We gauge size by context," Martinez-Conde and Macknik, authors of Champions of Illusion, wrote. "The same medium-sized circle will appear smaller when surrounded by large circles and bigger when surrounded by tiny ones, a phenomenon discovered by German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus."

"Social and psychological context also causes us to misperceive size. Recent research shows that spiders appear larger to people who suffer from arachnophobia than to those who are unafraid of bugs and that men holding weapons seem taller and stronger than men who are holding tools."

I literally well up with tears thinking of their majesty. COVID did a lot of bad stuff, but that trip we took to Yosemite fall of 2020 will remain one of the greatest things I’ve ever done with my family - and I’ve traveled the world and even lived abroad with them.

Neuroscientists from the University of Washington and the University of Minnesota have even found that the first area in the cortex of the human brain that receives information from the eyes processes the perceived size, rather than the actual size, of an object.

"Our eyes only tell us part of what we need to be able to see. The other part is done by the brain, taking the input from the eyes and making guesses or inferences about what's out there in the environment," said Scott Murray, who at the time was a UW assistant psychology professor and lead author of the study. "Usually these inferences are very accurate, but sometimes they lead us astray in the form of visual illusions."

Don't you think HELP would be better for rescue?

Murray and his Minnesota colleagues, Huseyin Boyaci and Daniel Kersten, used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to see how the brain processes the size of objects when faced with an illusion such as the long-known moon illusion. (For centuries, it has been known that the moon, while rising, looks huge when it is near the horizon and smaller when high in the sky, even though it's always the same size.)

The researchers used a similar illusion, one that looked at the perceived difference in the size of an object at different distances. For their experiment, they placed two identical spheres decorated with a checkerboard pattern in the front and rear of a receding brick hallway. In this kind of illusion, the more distant object appears to occupy a larger portion of the visual field.

Using fMRI, the researchers analyzed how the brains of five people with normal vision registered this difference in perceived size. They noticed that the brain region known as the primary visual cortex, which is the first area in the cortex to receive input from the retina, showed a difference.

Even though both spheres occupied exactly the same size on the retina, the sphere in the rear activated an approximately 20 percent larger area in the primary visual cortex than the sphere in front. This difference closely matched a perceptual difference in size reported by the subjects. When they were asked about the size of the two spheres, the participants estimated the back sphere to be about 20 percent larger than the front one.

The mastiff weighs 4 - 5 times what my cocker weighs, yet my dog will run in again, and again, and again to get thrown around and chased by her. Small dogs... she doesn't even bother with.

The building was magnificent but turned out impractical: it suffered from book-damaging flooding, poor lighting, poor ventilation, a coal heating system that dropped soot on everything, poor fire safety, and other problems including not enough space for the books. https://rarehistoricalphotos.com/the-old-cincinnati-library-demolition-1874-1955/ and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Main_Library_(Cincinnati)

Folks pine over these old buildings "cuz pretty" but what most people don't take into account is how difficult it is to keep them upright and how incredibly expensive it is to just "run the plant" for a month. When they were built, most everything was significantly cheaper in part because the infrastructure that served them was quite new. As they aged the required upkeep became expensive (anyone who has a utility bill knows) with added fees for maintenance of the utility systems and the buildings alike. Retrofitting them to make it cheaper to operate is as costly or moreso than a replacement building that is designed to accommodate and protect the contents within it.

If you’re its keeper, maybe. Zoo animals are trained to present body parts, open their mouths, etc for treats so that if they are injured or ill it’s possible for the vet to examine them without causing them distress or having to anaesthetise them.

New shoots can grow 91cm (35in) in the span of 24 hours, 6 meters (20 feet) per week, reaching it's mature height of 24-30 meters (80-100 feet) in the span of a month or three. Bamboo also has better tensile and compressive strength compared to wood, only requires air drying for 6-12 weeks (with a borax treatment to drive off infestation) instead of the years long process of curing wood which often includes a heating step. Everything should be built out of bamboo

That head is so clearly on a completely different scale, it's easy to see that it was once the neck supporting a much larger head which broke off in antiquity.

I agree. Do you think that it was a head that broke off or do you think it was some oik of a pharaoh who decided to vandalise it and replace it with his own likeness?

Zephyr343: the hard hats always have a use. There's a lot of stuff on any big construction site that can fall or workers could bash their heads into. See all those ladders and scaffolding? There's a small crane used for lifting smaller things visible. Of course dropping a big block would kíll anyone it landed on, so they're very very careful about that side of things (well, maybe - Indian constructions sites aren't famous for following all the regulations all the time. 😬)

The Crazy Horse Memorial is a massive, still-under-construction mountain carving in the Black Hills of South Dakota, dedicated to the Oglala Lakota warrior Crazy Horse and honoring all Indigenous people of North America. The project began in 1948 and is privately funded through donations and fees. The sculpture depicts Crazy Horse on a horse, with the final dimensions planned to be 563 feet high and 641 feet long, making it the world's largest mountain carving upon completion.

The thing on the right is one blade of the turbine. Two are fitted. Presumably, the ring of "sticky out things" are threaded studs/bolts which attach the blade to the turbine hub. I'd guess that the encrustation visible on the detached blade is snow or ice, looking at the landscape below. The standing structure looks new, so I'd guess that the blade is being moved into position for installation.

There''s a plant in a free zone not far from where I live where the blades are manufactured. They are HUGE. When an order is shipped, it's one set of blades per flatbed truck and there usually are numerous trucks. The road has to be closed and the convey accompanied by a police escort.

Janissary35680: what you're seeing are relatively small blades. With the big blades, it's one per truck. I've just checked the specs for one modern big wind turbine - rotor diameter 175m (574 ft). Assuming 10m for the hub diameter (a guess), that means each blade is about 82.5 m (271 ft) long. Trucking them along ordinary roads is not at all easy. Here's a video of a 57.5m blade being taken along a road in Scotland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTpZ5V4HrK4. They are endangered, yes, but not extinct, hardly the last given they still exist and this photo is 90 years old. This guy got stuck on an anchor line and had to be put down.

the MV Pasha Bulker, a bulk carrier ship that ran aground at Nobbys Beach in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, on June 8, 2007. The ship was stranded during a major storm while waiting offshore to load coal. The storm caused widespread flooding, strong winds, and high seas in the area. All 22 crew members were safely evacuated by helicopter. The vessel was successfully refloated on July 2, 2007, and towed to Japan for major repairs.

Yeah, no. That's mostly just an illusion down to a long lens, a bit like the forced perspective used in some movies. And as bulk carrier ships go, that's not particularly large,

Our 210' Coast guard cutter in dry dock in Mobile Al in the 80's. Blades on props were variable pitch, meaning the blades themselves could rotate on the hub. Also, tied up in the Mobile River prior to dry dock, a smaller fully laden tanker came up during my midnight watch and our ship rose 5-6 feet, moved forward, then dropped and moved backwards. Learned displacement theory that night.

It's not just size of the engine. The inner engine, core engine, hasn't grown nearly as much, but the more modern ones are Turbofan engines, having a huge fan in the front (basically, a propeller in a housing with as many blades as fit), that usually is about twice the diameter of the cor engine's compressor wheels and aims at increasing efficiency. The air flows around the inner engine, creates additional thrust, but isn't involved in combustion, that only happens in the inner engine. Core engine. Without this shift in technology in mind, the size comparison may be misleading, as the growth in diameter is real, no doubt, but it isn't the size of equivalent parts that has grown that far.
