When you were a kid you were afraid of the dark because of monsters lurking in the shadows, well Irish illustrator Brian Coldrick has cast these creatures as the stars of his ongoing webcomic and book "Behind You: One-Shot horror stories." Each of the cool drawings is a beautiful and haunting one-panel illustration that shows a monster hiding just in arms reach, along with darkly humorous one-sentence captions. The London-based artist states that although none of his short scary stories are direct adaptations of existing narratives, they do touch on "well-worn horror tropes."
Coldrick told Bored Panda that his inspiration for the series of creepy stories sprung from his love for horror films, books, and spooky internet stories. "Just before I started the series I'd been reading through some Creepy Pastas, the internet's version of spooky folktales, and also lots of horror stories of 'real life' supernatural encounters on sites like Reddit."
An illustrator since 2003, he began 'Behind You' in April 2015 and confessed it was partly borne as an attempt to tackle his laziness. "I had wanted to do a continuing webcomic for a while, but I was worried I'd lose interest after starting a story I thought if each installment was a snippet of different scary stories I could start each time afresh. It also had the great side effect of leaving much of the story to be decided by the reader. It's probably the main reason people enjoy these scary drawings."
With a style all his own, these murky pictures have a charm you can't ignore. The artist said he uses a hand pencil to create his characters but works with Photoshop to create the backgrounds, add texture, and make the animations. Although he has many artistic influences, (such as horror comics Junji Ito and Emily Carroll), he said GIF illustrators Rebecca Mock and Sachin Teng had a direct impact on his attempts to make his own illustrations move.
When it comes to Coldrick's creative process, the order can vary. "I almost always start with the image first but once or twice a phrase has popped into my head, and I've worked back from there. Rather than a coherent story, the first step is usually one element. In the early days of the series it might have been a desire to draw a particular kind of creepy monster, but later on, it's been the setting. A kitchen at night illuminated by a fridge light, or an escalator on the Underground. Sometimes it can be something darker like the loneliness, doubts or anxieties that emerge once no one else is around."
In addition to "Behind You," Coldrick draws editorial pieces, posters, book covers, and character designs. Check out some of his short horror stories from this quirky webcomic series below!

Wow, thank you for that - I just actually laughed out loud!
Load More Replies...Oh wow, this one made me way too anguish right now. For real, my heart is beating so fast I'm starting to sweat. I think I'll just save this article and look at it in the morning instead of right now, in the dark at my desk with the whole room empty and the door behind me.
I once stayed last in the office because I had so much work to do, as it accumulated while I was on holidays and my colleague was left along with a workload that's too much even for just two people that would have been us. I reached the point when I get so tired I become mad and kinda lively. I found myself singing the Beatles as I was closing thw windows and turning the lights and air conditioning off. "IT'S BEEN A HAAAAAAAARD DAAAAAY'S NIGHT! AND I'VE BEEN WORKIIIIIIIIING LIKE A DO-OH-OG!" ♬♬
That´s why I leave 5 o´clock. Some people told me they have heard annoying noises late at night... so...
The cats always know.... When we moved in my two cats were often staring at the same spot on the ceiling. Few months later, I gave birth to my son and he was also staring this area, but as he was babbling and smiling at it, I decided we had a friendly ghost.
that's why i have a cat, they are a guardian of the underworld, they protected us.
Hmm - if they are a guardian of the underworld they protect the underworld. That's not us, well, it's not me! What are you telling us Lenka? ;-)

My bedroom is down one hallway. When you walk from my bedroom and down into the hallway, the living room is to the right and the kitchen is right in front of you. The hallway continues to the front door, and there is a halfwall in between the little front door hallway and the part of the kitchen that has the refrigerator. When you open the fridge you are facing away from the front door. This always makes me nervous that something is slipping through the front door and hiding behind me when I get to to get a snack from the refrigerator at night.
Ack, now I'm going to remember this everytime I go down into the kitchen at night
This is the reason why i always close the door of my bedroom when i go to sleep.
Nope. The kitty would know and react. I don't believe this one (I have two cats and one of the reason I got them is that so they can warn me of all the lurking monsters. So far so good)!
I find it impossible to sleep with the door to my room open, especially when I'm alone.
It's actually the opposite for me, I leave my bedroom door open during the night so if a monster comes in I will have a quick escape route

I am always afraid of hidden creatures under my bed, after spending thousands of bucks on psychologists an no avail, my friend who is a carpenter too, simply cut down the legs of my bed and now it sits on floor. I won a little battle with monsters, though when I travel it again becomes hard, I cant sleep on floor too as I keep looking beneath nearby beds. It has rotten my whole life. I started keeping small portable LED lights with me which brighten up the underneath of beds and that gives me some consolation when sleeping on floor.
I had a foster child whose fear of nighttime monsters approached yours in severity. He seemed tormented at the thought of going to bed each night. He was too old or too savvy for "tricks" to work. Of course, I set him up with a psychologist, which didn't help (at least with that issue). My husband and I took shifts so we could get some sleep, but the poor child was still left fighting the monsters on his own, since we couldn't see them. Finally, I brought in one of my dogs, a big shepherd mix, to sleep right on his bed with him. It's the only thing that brought him comfort and rest. Since dogs really do spot danger before us, and really will fight to protect us from even the worst monsters, it was no trick, and the child knew that, and slept. He was later sent to live with a distant family member, (breaking my heart for the thousandth time), and I'll always wonder whether the monsters found him again in his new home. I hope not, and I hope they had a big dog.

There are two monsters under the bed and one goes to reach for the foot, but the other monster stops him and says something like, No, you must honor the blanket.
And then The Grudge 2 comes along and messes up the whole "safe under the blanket" thing. I won't spoil it but I didn't sleep without ALL the lights on for days after watching that!!

For a moment our fingers touched, and hers were as cold as twigs after a frost. She opened the book to her place, the playing card fluttering out, and placed Somerset Maugham over her face -- a shroud of words. As she crossed her hands on her bosom and lay still, I realized she was wearing the blue dress I had buried her in. She had come out of her grave to hide under our bed." (Bag of Bones, Stephen King)

Before my grandfather died, we visited him at the hospital. He was on the top floor, so we got on the elevator. At the third floor, it opened, and the automatic voice said, "Third floor." People who needed to get out got out. Then the elevator doors closed. When it opened again, the voice once again said, "Third floor." Looking out, it was clearly the third floor. The next time the doors opened, it was still the third floor. Everyone panicked and got out instead of my family. This time, when the doors closed, the elevator moved up and we laughed, saying how everyone else should have also waited. Until the lights went out, there was a crash and the sensation of falling. Then the elevator doors opened and the automatic voice, "Third floor." My mom then pointed out. "It's the fourth elevator." Four is the death number in Chinese. As one, my family scrambled out.
My sister and I were so intrigued by the experience that we decided to ride the Number 4 Elevator again. This time, we got onto the elevator from the top floor (our grandfather's room). As it was the top floor, everyone in the elevator got out, except for one, a patient with long black hair covering her face, wearing a hospital gown. I should point out that this was during the Ghost Month, where there were many commercials about ghosts, depicted as women with long black hair covering their faces, visiting their families on tv. The patient didn't interact with anyone, nor got out, even though we rode the elevator to the first floor. Otherwise, the trip was uneventful.

I once witnessed something similar. It was morning, though, not night. My husband and I were on a short trip to the sea side. In the motel room, he was sleeping, I was taking a shower. The bathroom had a window facing the beach and there were two swings. Outside, there was nobody, as it wasn't touristic season yet. But one of the swings was moving as if someone was using it. The other swing was as still as everything else, indicating no wind flow to cause this movement. Of course I thought of spooky stories immediately. However, somehow, I wasn feeling spooked. I was rather... fascinated by the mysterious laws of physics? O_o
Why is the other swing moving? Why isn't the ghosty dude pushing him?

They watched her roam the halls, a little girl with her right arm splinted, and a hospital gown on. They knew why she was here. She would receive no harm tonight. Not inside the hospital. Outside they couldn’t help, couldn’t protect. But once she was inside the walls of this place, anything seeking to harm her would pay dearly. It was the least they could do for the little girl who had paid so much. It wasn’t her first stay. Nor would it be her last. She wouldn’t walk these halls alone again. They watched the little girl with darkness in her eyes mastering these halls. And hoped she never had to come back.
