In “Marginados”, visual artist Mateus Morbeck uses artificial intelligence to produce digital images that portray people who were exiled during the period of military dictatorship in Brazil, between 1966 and 1985.
The physical descriptions of banished and exiled people, contained in documents produced by the Foreign Information Center – CIEX, an ultra-secret spy agency formed by diplomats and infiltrated agents, served as prompts to create images of those whose lives were fragmented and their destinies were interrupted in the search for freedom amidst the horizon of uncertainty.
Artificial intelligence is responsible for bringing to life portraits that transcend objective reality and expand understanding by intertwining memory and fiction, the human and the technological. On a journey of rescue and confrontation, the imagined faces defy oblivion so that the silenced voices are never forgotten amid the shadows of the past.
Mateus Morbeck is a Brazilian visual artist and architect. His production ranges from photography to generative art using computational algorithms. Its procedural and methodological search is structured based on image perception relationships, through the use of technologies, old and current, in a continuous process of tensioning the complexity of layers and meanings.
