“Reyn: Angel of Freedom” is currently serialized on Webtoon Canvas, and follows a young girl’s struggles to love and accept herself in a world that wants her dead. After her mother’s murderer, Reyn searches for truth, but the more she learns, the more she begins to fear herself. Only her brother has the answers, but he disappears on the night of the murder. Can Reyn find him before the world discovers who she is?
This YA fantasy story contains themes of racism, self-acceptance, and friendship.
Shelly Gertan animated most of this project in her local Starbuck’s, not letting her lack of a workspace stop her from spending 4 full-time months bringing Reyn to life. She graduated SCAD in 2019 and proceeded to intern with BigBadBoo in New York, before she returned to Austria (Europe), where the lack of local studios prompted her to start her own.
Her first short film, “Despite,” won first place at the Jewish Film Festival, among others. Her second project, “I Didn’t Ask for This” won Best Animation of Austria and led to an invitation to the Vienna International Film Awards’ Red Carpet gala.
Shelly is determined to turn “Reyn” into a fully animated musical series. Stay tuned for updates!
