A Meerkat And A Cat Became BFFs On Day One, And Together They Conquered The Hearts Of People On Instagram
90Kviews
Meerkats (Suricata Suricatta) are naturally wild animals mostly living in the Kalahari or Namibian desert and other regions of Africa. It seems that the last place you’d expect them is somewhere up north where there’s winter and it’s cold, like Russia. This is why this meerkat called Surya is so special as she’s living in the loving home of Ekaterina Kuraeva in St. Petersburg. Surya was adopted from the Moscow zoo and Ekaterina didn’t want the lovely thing to end up as an “office toy”.

One could think that there’s not much to do and that it’s pretty boring for a social animal like meerkat who usually live in clans, mobs, and gangs. But Surya is not alone. She has a chunky Chartreux cat named Nice to keep him company. It’s an ironic coincidence that even though they’re not genetically related to cats, they look so feline-like, that they were called meerkat, or mierkat, which in Dutch and Afrikaans respectively mean “lake cat” and “termite cat.”

This unlikely yet very lively duo became BFFs 6 years ago when Nice was already 2-years-old at the time and Surya was only a little babe. They clicked from the get-go and they’re inseparable ever since, and their Instagram profile is a testament to this relationship. Surya has a needy and affectionate personality, up to a point that he gets jealous if Ekaterina is giving too much attention to the cat, then he jumps and claws to get Nice away. Nice is much calmer and discrete, yet he’s very happy to oblige when Surya needs some TLC. They spend their time together 24/7 as they cuddle, play, nap and hug each other all the time. As they do it, they make for, arguably, the most adorable photos and videos on the internet.

Ekaterina Kuraeva, the 45-year-old loving owner of the two, updates the Instagram profile daily, which now has over 36k followers, and it steadily keeps growing. The owner is, of course, more than happy that they get along, as she admitted to Bored Panda, “it is fortunate that they have become friends and are so affectionate to each other.” We couldn’t agree more! So check out these two best buds, and their adorable adventures together, and we also recommend visiting Surya’s personal Instagram, as there are loads of super cute videos in there, too!

Again, something that is considered normal only in Russia, ‘adopting’ and keeping a WILD ANIMAL as a pet. Dear BP, please don’t promote this. As cute as they might seem together, the meerkat should live with her group of meerkats, not with a cat.
Don't worry, people have pet tigers in the US, which is genuinely nuts!
It was rescued from A Zoo
Why are you top comment while saying the same thing as me and Im bottom comment...
I don't know. Probably because you got downvotes due to your opinion about the cat. I upvoted it. I would never buy a cat or a dog, as long as the shelters are full of them. But I focused on the meerkat here.

Firstly, there are many countries where you are permitted to keep wild animals, not only Russia. Second, who are you to judge what history the meerkat has behind it? Perhaps it is having a much better life now and is being taken care of and loved. Third, there are many examples of interspecies friendships in the animal kingdom, even in the wild. So altogether, you sound more like a sorry racist than a concerned animal friend.
Hello! Concerned animal friend here. Firstly, that’s a sad thing that ‘there are many countries’ where people don’t leave the wild animals alone. They are the ones that destroy our Earth, to them nothing else matters but the human on top of the world, everything else is subordinate. Second, if there was any story behind this meerkat, don’t you think that it would be mentioned in the article? The woman was just seeking attention. 'Two cats are boring. What exotic animal could I fit into my apartment? Ohh, a meerkat, perfect! Let’s buy one!’ Just because she can’t tear the owner into pieces, to me she is as wild as a bear or a puma. Ohh, wait.. someone has a puma already… This is what I think about this topic. I won’t click on a similar article again, I’m fed up.
I'm seriously concerned about a lot of these photos, both animals look heavily sedated and made to pose... it just all looks unnatural and creepy.
Some cats are like that, but now that you mentioned... I looked up meerkats and they don't seem to be this lazy at all. Also the length of her claws on her front paws, compared to pictures of other meerkats. This animal is born to dig burrows and live under the ground, not in an apartment... this is wrong on so many levels!
I'm happy the meerkat found a home, but these stories do NOT paint the Russian zoos, etc in a good light.
An unusual friendship; a very cute couple
