We often hear about the biggest animals that would easily tower over humans twice, thrice, and some even ten times. But how big, exactly, are they?
Let’s take the blue whale, which is known as one of the largest animals ever to exist. Imagine: the largest ever measured 110 feet long. If that doesn’t ring a bell just yet, think of it as longer than 2 packed school buses that seat 40 people each. It’s also longer than 18 grown men of 6 feet laid head to toe with each other.
If your head is spinning, right down below is a collection of animal photos that put their size into perspective and do the "just imagine" part for us. From very large Maine coons to gigantic Siberian tigers, these are the big boys and girls of the animal kingdom.

We usually imagine felines as cute little furballs who, no matter how fast they grow up, still fit into our lap just fine. But there’s one cat breed known as the Maine coon that can easily reach up to 40 inches. In comparison, the average size of an adult domestic cat comes in at as little as 8 to 10 inches.
In order to find out more about the scale of these massive felines, Bored Panda reached out to Jess Beckwith, a professional Maine coon breeder based in the United Kingdom from RudyCats.co.uk. Jess told us that Maine coons are referred to “as the dogs of the cat world, not only because of their incredible personalities, but also because of their size.”
They’re the biggest domestic cats and can range from 11 to 33 pounds when fully grown. Two of Jess’s “young neutered boys currently hit the scales at around 21 pounds.” Meanwhile, the largest Maine coon is named Barivel and he measures a whopping 3 feet and 11.2 inches from head to tail tip. That makes him longer than a baseball bat.
However impressive the scale of Maine coons may be, it’s not the most important feature when it comes to exhibitions. Jess said that “good bone structure, features, and the ‘not too extreme’ look is best, as well as temperament and health, of course,” are more important for winning a title in the big game.

Giant African Land Snail
This big boy who resembles an oversized guinea pig is, in fact, a nocturnal marsupial known as a wombat (Vombatus ursinus). Patrick has stolen people's hearts by being both incredibly cute and gigantic. Weighing 84 pounds, he is one of the largest (and oldest) wombats ever to have lived.
Only quite recently, a new, wombat-like species was discovered in Australia called Makupirna nambensis, which literally translates to “big bones” in the aboriginal language. The creature’s remains are now one of the oldest fossils found in the area, thought to date back to 25 million years ago.This boy could have weighed 330 pounds, which is more than five adult wombats living today.
Yet, Makupirna is still not the biggest. The absolute record-breaking wombat-like creature was called Diprotodon and it weighed over two tons. This powerful beast could have lived until 11,700 years ago.

Not to worry. The only effect of one dose of Hymenoptera venom is a short period of pain and unless you have an allergy, it's not that dangerous at all. But beware the warrior wasp. A man compared the sting to being chained in the flow of an active volcano. Although if you get swarmed by those beasts, it's game over.

Vespa Mandarinia Japonica don't get quite that big (though they are impressively big) and they're black and yellow. These look quite different from the ones I've seen. In Japan, Asian Hornets are very docile. They're like cows with wings. Many people are afraid of them, but if you move gently and don't threaten them, they're not a problem. I've helped dozens of them out the windows when they get inside, and haven't been stung yet.

Keep your tennis racket around, and a can of raid. Hit the damned thing hard enough to stun it, then spray the s**t out of it so it can't exact revenge. I have survived attack from yellow jackets because I was sitting too close to their nest, and now I have a fear of them where I didn't before. I will not allow those to investigate me for any reason. It comes at me, I will kill it without question.

I was stung by a regular ole hornet when I was a kid. It was so painful I've never forgotten it almost 4 decades later. I was running and it got me in the front of my shoulder. Even though I lived in a rural, safe area, I honestly thought I'd been shot. I can't imagine getting stung by one of these. It would be excruciating.

What are you basing that on? Most of the animals are still very much alive and many of them are being helped by the humans in the pictures.

Creatures rarely get big anymore because of morons who want to hunt them for trophies. We have camera phones. Just take a selfie to prove you encountered the behemoth and share that alongside your story.

Agreed 100% While there is some benefit to controlled hunting of certain animal species in certain areas, and at specific times...Trophy hunting is barbaric and elitist. Thankfully, photo safari's are becoming the norm. Also, shooting something with a camera and getting a good photo is much harder than killing something with a gun. It challenges and requires the same skills, too.

Here is one of the basic problems with people today, they assume everything without seeking out the information first. None of these pictures contained trophy kills! Most of the dead animals could have been killed by other animals not just humans. And here is the biggest one: People STILL EAT MEAT! Just because you are a vegan/vegetarian does not mean that everyone is as well. It was YOUR CHOICE to live that lifestyle, I didn't choose that for you. So don't sit there on your fake throne and try to tell everyone else how to live their lives. If we eat meat, then just move a long with your condescending b******t!

Too bad I was too busy screaming when a 30 cm. black moth woke me up in Mexico to take a picture posing for scale. Despite being harmless, they're calle Death Butterflies. Guess it's because they give you a heart attack

All these people are saying that they hope the animals are ok and how horrible humans are for killing them. I bet most of these people eat steak, cheeseburgers, meatballs, and many other foods with meat in them. I don't like the mistreatment of animals either but I can't live without meat so I can not be making a fuss about how bad humans are for killing animals.

It's a bit disturbing at how many comments on "so sad" or "hope it wasn't hunted" there are. My people have hunted and used animal parts for food, clothing, etc for thousands of years. [I'm Mayan] I'm not about to end my people's traditions because of a few sensitive sallies. Only difference is today, I use modern tools for hunting. The thing that has remained the same? Honouring and thanking the animal who died in order to feed and clothe me and my family.

Didn't know this site has so many PETA members. You all are aware that it is legally and morally ok to kill and eat animals, right? People have been doing it for quite some time now.

Believe me, a lot of them are NOT PETA members. PETA's reputation is not that great. Even though I share your viewpoint on animals, it's more a matter of practicality and realizing pollution, loss of habitat, etc is worse. Really, non-trophy-only hunting is the least evil that humans do, still hate seeing them dead. I could only hunt or even fish in a case of extreme necessity. Don't make assumptions.
