Women Open Up About Their Abortion Stories With The Hashtag #YouKnowMe As Response To Alabama Abortion Law
Multiple celebrities are using their platforms to protest the push for harsher abortion regulations in a handful of southern states. 'The Good Place' actress Jameela Jamil shared her abortion story in response to Georgia's newest law and now T.V personality Busy Philipps of 'Busy Tonight' has done the same - introducing the hashtag #YouKnowMe.
Philipps has been openly pro-choice and decided to first share the story of her abortion on her show after Georgia signed their "fetal heartbeat" bill into law. "The statistic is that one in four women will have an abortion before age 45. That statistic sometimes surprises people," she said to her audience, "and maybe you’re sitting there thinking, ‘I don’t know a woman who would have an abortion,’ well, you know me I had an abortion when I was 15 years old and I’m telling you this because I’m genuinely really scared for women and girls all over the country.”
The phrase 'you know me' struck a chord with her producer Tina Fey, who encouraged her to start the hashtag. Philipps told The New York Times,"She said, 'I think you hit on something, which is you know me,'" but admitted to the outlet she felt too "overwhelmed" to do it right after opening up about her story. After the Alabama Senate passed another restrictive abortion bill, effectively completely banning it, which has since been signed into law, she tweeted out against it and used #YouKnowMe. She encouraged women to use the hashtag to share their own abortion stories to "end the shame" that surrounds the procedure. Like the similar hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion, it quickly went viral.

That was the more merciful thing to do, It's crazy that after Ireland changes it laws, America is going backwards. We had a citizens assembly first to get all of the information then we voted.
Load More Replies...No, you are not a criminal. You're a mom that made the best decision for their child. Period.
I was bleeding to death in my third month. Dr said I was miscarryng and I will pass. IT DIDNT, I as gettng weaker and weaker and bleeding. Finally Dr told me to go to planned parenthood a get an abortion. My sister helped me pay for it. I was married but we both had been looking for jobs, just out of high school. I was better instantly. Dr told me fetus would have been deformed. A miscarriage usually means something is wrong. I have a wonderful life and had 4 more children. And now I have 7 grandchildren. Don't tap this decision from the woman or the Drs.
I can only imagine that this was an incredibly difficult time for you. I'm sorry that you had to go through this.
When I met my boyfriend, very early into our relationship, one of the FIRST questions I asked was: "Are you ok with abortion"? I was happy to hear that he was. Many people wouldn't begin to ask questions like that early on in a relationship... for fear of being perceived as "a clingy one" or "crazy". But sometimes, the best time to ask is as soon as possible. My boyfriend did not bat an eyelash, change expression, or accuse me of asking a serious question "too soon" and develop commitment issues. I hope other couples can have a similar experience.
And that was a parenting choice... I'm sorry that it had to go that way
I don't know if you realize this but that was a horrible thing to say. I think you were trying to make a nice sentiment but it came out really wrong.
Load More Replies...In 1973 Roe v Wade was passed by the Supreme Court to legalize abortion, but in 1992 they were faced with Casey v Planned Parenthood which is what ultimately gave individual states more control over how they regulated these abortions. According to the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive health research and policy organisation, the first quarter of 2019 saw at least 28 state legislatures introduce some form of abortion ban. So far seven states introduced restrictive abortion bans, with Alabama being the most recent.
that's not even either/or here... if she died the foetus would have, too...
This is what people = men & women - forget. So sad.
Load More Replies...Even if you're pro-life this situation shouldn't even be a discussion.
My poor grandma told me of the "female curse", and how she relied to "wise women" to end unwanted pregnancies during her 57 years long marriage. Her narrative was about men being careless and women being expected to "take care of it" somehow. In silence and shame, in pain and often risking their lives with improvised hooks, knitting needles or venomous potions.
Load More Replies...Well this abortion would still be allowed in Alabama, this isn't helping the cause

Load More Replies...Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed the controversial abortion bill passed by The Alabama Senate passed the bill 25-6, that could punish doctors who perform abortions with a 99-year or lifetime prison sentence. The law does not allow exceptions for rape and incest, which even some religious supporters like Evangelical leader Pat Robertson said "has gone too far." The law only allows exceptions "to avoid a serious health risk to the unborn child's mother," for ectopic pregnancy and if the "unborn child has a lethal anomaly."
The fact that people out there feel a 12 year old should be forced against their will to have a child when they themselves are still a child says more about them than it does about the 12 year old.
So true. Let them have the choice and everyone else can mind their own business.

Then when my period came when i 12 - 13 yr old, he put his filthy hands on me, and he treatened me "Don't u dare to tell anyone", but i tell, so i don't have to end up like this poor girl.
Why there still DUMD-A*S peoples think children get pregnant because of "the child fault"? Does a child have any strength to beat a pervert who wants to use force on them? And those DUMB-A*S ppls also don't know this: After that pedophile is arrested, he said [the victims] is just 10-12, they shouldn't get pregnant even how many times he have sex with them, that's is his "excuse" for his crime "because they can't pegnant", so he will do what he want and think noone will know (because he will treathen those childens, as my case), also that's time i know why so many of my friends turn from a "loving life person" into a very "negative person". :(
Load More Replies...ok, some girls are not even physically capable of carrying to term
Hard to go through that even later on life, I'm sorry you had to go through that so early especially.
Georgia's governor Brian Kemp signed a "heartbeat bill", that bans abortion once a fetal heartbeat has been detected, which is possible as early as six weeks. Heartbeats can be detected before many women even know that they're pregnant. Unlike Alabama there are exceptions in the case of rape and incest if a police report has been filed. Other exceptions include if an abortion is essential to saving the mother's life or if the fetus is not viable due to a serious medical issue. The ACLU has plans to challenge this legislation.
May that strenght continue to be with you. Women MUST have the right to decide over their own bodies. Period.
Just look at all the men pouring into this particular comment section with their d***s swinging, like they all managed to keep it in their pants at 16 and wouldn't have whipped it out for the first girl who they even THOUGHT showed interest in having sex with them! Shame on them. And how brave and strong you were at only 16, to know what you needed to do to change that family pattern and take charge of your own destiny!
Good for you to be able to make that call and go through with it to break the cycle of your family
You absolutely made the right choice. And there is the key word - "CHOICE". I'm glad that choice was available to you. You knew what that child would have been facing, more than anybody else (particularly men in powerful positions) could know. Have a long and happy life, CrissCross.
Most US school systems: no sex ed. no good role models. no real information. no real access to birth control, if she was in one of those states that keeps closing clinics. so many employers not covering birth control on their health plans. and why is it only up to her?
Load More Replies...Kentucky legislators have been going back and forth to pass abortion laws. The ACLU filed a lawsuit against a heartbeat law in the state and blocked it and earlier this month another judge struck down a 2018 abortion law that would have ended a common second-trimester abortion procedure known as“dilation and evacuation.” In response Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin’s administration has begun the appeal process of this 2018 ruling and filed it with the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Horrible experience. Kepp being strong and standing up for your rights.
I can't even fathom why some people think a woman should be forced against their will to carry a rape baby. That's just further victimizing them.
The MP Jacon Rees Mogg in the UK thinks like that. Abysmal excuse for a human.

Load More Replies...Similar to Kentucky's legislation, Mississippi seeks to ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat has been detected. The law was set to take effect on July 1, but the state's only abortion clinic and the Center for Reproductive Rights have asked a federal judge to block it. Current Mississippi restrictions require a 24-hour wait between an in-person consultation and the procedure.
That really pisses me off. I want my uterus removed so I can’t fall pregnant, have no periods and not get early menopause. But I am deemed too young as I might want more kids. I have 2 children and I am 100000% sure I don’t want anymore. If my contraception fails I will be opting for an abortion. I hope it doesn’t happen but if it does that is the choice I will make.
Oli Li, I have 2 kids with disabilities and a lot of my times is spent taking them to therapies. I don’t have the mental and emotional strength to have any more kids and it also wouldn’t be fair because a lot of my time is already taken. I know for a fact I could not cope having any more kids. I struggle enough as it is. I am done, the idea of me having any more kids actually fills me with anxiety. I definitely will not change my mind.
Load More Replies...that is what drives me nuts. not only do they want to take away choice, but they don't let you take preventative measures with your own body to never get that way in the first place.
I've got a friend with PCOS who's going through the same b******t where the hospitals are refusing her surgery because "her future man might want kids some day", what a load of s**t. Hospitals should NOT have the power to make those kinds of judgement calls.
Her future man? He doesn't get to overule her choices either. If he wants children and she doesn't then bye-bye.

Same here. I like children but I am in constant pain for various reasons and didn't want to force a child to probably end up becoming my carer. But 'you'll change your mind'. Nope.

The world is overpopulated anyway. Good on you for wanting to adopt instead!
Load More Replies...Again, it's people telling women what they want, and IGNORING them. Why is it so acceptable for people to literally ignore someone's choices over their own body?? if someone changes their mind, it's *their* responsibility!! No-one else's!! If she had the tubal ligation and later regretted it - that's *her* responsibility.
I wish I could upvote you 100 times. This is my thoughts exactly!
Load More Replies...I had a doctor refuse to perform a hysterectomy for me, despite my uterus being pre-cancerous (I'd already had breast cancer), because I was/am single and my "future husband" might want kids.
Please take a moment to ponder the life choices available to women in countries where even contraception is illegel! Small wonder the homicide rates are often invertedly related to the availability of legal and avalable birth control and abortions.
North Dakota's governor has signed legislation that makes it a crime for a doctor to perform a second-trimester abortion with the use of instruments i.e clamps, scissors and forceps in order to remove the fetus from the womb. If caught medical professionals would be faced with a felony charge, up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The bill would come into effect and be enforceable if a federal appeals court or the US Supreme Court allows it.
And this is what it will turn back into if we make them illegal and unobtainable. Abortions have taken place since the ancient Egyptians. Women are going to do them no matter what the laws are.
oh god... this made my literally cry out loud. THIS is why a *safe* OPTION needs to be available. Noone is saying that *everyone* must have abortions. What is being said, is that a SAFE CHOICE MUST BE AVAILABLE. Making them "illegal" doesn't change the fact that they WILL happen. It's 2019 for goodness sake!!!
PLEASE make this higher. This is exactly what we will revert to if these laws keep passing. Why doesn’t anyone remember the horrible stories and pictures of backdoor abortions. Why can’t people just mind their own bodies. 😔
And this is why we continue to fight. No woman deserves to have to go through that
It is absolutely horrible that you did not have access to safe abortion.
Ohio's governor signed a heartbeat bill this year which banned abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected. The law does not provide any exceptions for rape or incest. The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit to challenge the six-week pregnancy ban, which is set to go into effect July 10 unless the ACLU court order is able to delay the start date while the lawsuit goes forward.

This happened to me too! The guy removed the condom without me knowing...He did it because "They feel weird and I don't like them". Not ok.
Don't be ashamed. He raped you. Yes, you consented to the sex (maybe?), but you did not consent to unprotected sex and an unwanted pregnancy. Removing the condom secretly without the partner's permission is considered rape. No shame for you. And, obviously, no punishment for him.
Don't succumb to shame. Sometimes it's the hardest thing to do as we are usually our worst critic. You shouldn't torture yourself with his poor decision
what sort of horrible man... not even a real man at that point... could do this to a woman?
Nice way to blame the victim. Hope you are kinder if it happens to one of your kids.
Load More Replies...Heartbeat legislation started as a model bill passed around by fringe anti-abortion groups, until it was taken up by North Dakota in 2013 and ultimately struck down by the lower courts - who deemed it unconstitutional. While it is likely that these laws will continue to get struck down by lower courts, the hope of anti-abortion groups is that some will make it to the Supreme Court. Even if the justices do not overturn Roe v Wade there is the possibility that they can uphold these measures to make the procedure more difficult to obtain in these states.
A child binds a woman to an abusive partner. Women are raped by abusive partners... Let's make a law that perpetuates this cycle and pat ourselves on the back for saving lives... Because that's the only thing that matters right!?
And some out there think the child is more important than the type of environment will be raised in. They care about a fetus, but quit caring when they're born.
This sounds a lot like the reason I got one too. Nothing wrong with wanting to make sure your life is where you want it to be first before you bring another life into this world.
Because its so easy to brrak up with abusive and potentially dangerous partners...

My best friend died at 21 from bone cancer. About a year before she died, during her chemotherapy she found out she was pregnant. She was having such massive doses of chemotherapy and radiation there would have been no quality to the child's life had it not been aborted. I was never ever able to get pregnant but I absolutely stand by other women's rights to this even though I desperately wanted a child of my own.
Another example of it shouldn't even be an argument. Have an abortion or have a child who will likely come out deformed, diseased, or maybe even dead.
Banning abortion won't stop it, only create dangerous, illegal ones, where girls will get permanently hurt.
when I think of bad abortions I always think of Dirty Dancing, I saw that when I was 8, quickly figured out what an abortion was and knew that its necessary that it be done by a trained medical professional.
Load More Replies...More stories like this need to be shared to remind society this is what will happen if we make them illegal. Women will still get them and then the fetus and the woman too might be dead.
I was adopted at birth and I would like to assume that my biological mother, whom I have NEVER met, wasn’t FORCED into carrying me. I am grateful for her willingness to give me up after birth in order to give me a better life with my parents, who could not conceive. However, if I found out she had been FORCED to carry me to term, I would feel inherently guilty about my existence. Adoption is NOT a viable option if you DO NOT WANT TO BE PREGNANT. My body, my choice. My biological mother’s body, HER choice.
I too, was adopted at birth. My birth mother had too many children and a husband who was a sexual predator. I never met her, but I would hope she was not forced either. Considering the time frame and the fact that it was a small town, I'm sure she had to-
Load More Replies...2 abortions! I'm sorry if I'm misreading this and you were using birth control that happened to fail on both occasions but can I just say that I feel people like you are the reason so many are against abortion. You are making it harder for women that are raped, at risk, or even just teens too young and stupid to think it can happen to them to get safe procedures..
It's true the reason why I'm pro life in certain circumstances is because some people just use abortion as birth control instead of as a last resort and I can't possibly be behind someone who destroys a potential life simply because they didn't want to go get preventive measures. Planned parenthood is literally giving condoms and a variety of birth control away for free and the only step they need to take is to simply get some. All the other reasons I can absolutely understand and even get behind unless they wait clear until the baby can exist outside of the mother. The only other reason this is happening is because New York went too far by allowing it up until the child's birthday. If someone lives in a place as thoroughly saturated as NY and just doesn't bother until the baby is nearly full term regardless of the circumstances it's a baby once it can survive on its own

These yahoos passing laws do not understand that. The idiot senator in Ohio thinks an ectopic pregnancy can be removed and replanted into the uterus. FFS. That kind of medical procedure would change the world. It's not possible.
It's complicated. I know logically in my head that the treatment for an ectopic pregnancy isn't an abortion, but when I was lying in the hospital bed with the doctor explaining that they'd be injecting me with something to "dissolve the pregnancy" I was distraught because it felt like she was telling me I had to have an abortion. In hindsight, I was completely sleep deprived and emotional so possible wasn't able to make an informed decision anyway. Turned out my fallopian tube had ruptured and I was bleeding internally so required emergency surgery, thus taking the decision out of my hands entirely.

I would also suggest that the fact she married him would lean towards being proof that he beat the alcoholism in order to have a healthy, stable relationship with her.
Just answering your question, not being critical of it. Maybe the parents caused the confusion? Some really don't like to think of their children knowing about sex even when the information is age appropriate. They think knowing sex exists makes sex inevitable instead of empowering young people and giving them the tools to make good choices. Parents might not allow the child any unsupervised access to the internet even when they are old enough to be given some leeway. Sadly, I can see how it might happen. Good sex education has proven to lower the rate of teenage pregnancies in the UK - it should be mandatory.
Load More Replies...@hashwadoobies, that's not the point. That doesn't work all the time, and that's their decision
I shouldn't have to explain this, but not all of these are options. Birth control is really hard on some women and can have very bad side effects. The withdrawal method is only about 75% effective, so please don't use this method. Sterilization is a fun one... Try being under 40 and getting one... Many doctors won't because you "might change your mind" or they make a woman get permission from her husband, which is disgusting. IUDs hurt getting placed and used to and are not for everyone, and there can be serious side effects from them. Birth control apps... Not particularly effective... And a lot of these things cost money which the person may not have. You don't know a person's situation, or if they've ever been educated on these things. Get off your high horse.

Honestly, America... I don't get it. If I can't care for that child or it comes from a rape or condom-ghosting or a contraceptive malfunction, it's forced upon a woman to carry that unwanted child to term? And what about a birth defect? Something really serious that may not be immediately fatal but cause that child terrible pain for a few weeks before it dies anyway? Are you saying its better to have that child born to a life (however short) of suffering than to prevent that suffering altogether? Seriously, what is it with America and trying to relegate women's reproductive organs?? I live in a 1st world country that allows abortion and we don't have clinics at every corner! But we do have physicians that provide us the best care and support during a difficult decision in our lives. Ever since that Orange clown sits in the big white building, America is slowly but surely degenerating... Save yourselves, Women, before the facists come for you! (German, I know a fascist when I see one!)
It's not America doing this b******t, it's American politicians. These bills were passed in spite of overwhelming opposition by the people.

Men never seem to be held accountable here. Where are the laws charging them with child abandonment or neglect? Why don't we start there? We are living in a country right now that doesn't give a s**t about mental health. If a woman is raped and becomes pregnant, every day she carries that child, every pound she gains, every kick she feels... every second is a CONSTANT reminder of that rape. How is that woman ever supposed to recover? I am DISGUSTED where this country is headed. If a person doesn't agree with abortion, no one is forcing them to have one, but DO NOT TAKE THE RIGHT AWAY FROM A WOMAN WHO WANTS OR NEEDS ONE. End. Of. Story.
I'll be honest, I used to be a Pro-Lifer. But that was when I was still in high school and I hadn't known much about abortion and rape and things like that until I was able to join sites like this. It's really opened my eyes to the issues our world is dealing with, and now that I've read up on a lot of this, I am DEFINITELY a Pro-Choicer. Thank you all for opening my eyes. :)
In Quebec "The decision to either continue a pregnancy or get an abortion is personal. This decision belongs to the woman; she is free to make her choice according to her desires and circumstances. There are many reasons why a woman might decide to get an abortion. The reasons are specific to each woman, and belong to her. Personnel delivering abortion services respect each woman’s decision without passing judgement. They provide abortion services and follow-up neutrally, respectfully and with complete confidentiality. "
The Canadian Supreme Court settled this for ALL of Canada decades ago.
Load More Replies...Against abortion? Don't f*****g have one. Until men can get pregnant, they shouldn't be able to legislate what women can legally do with their body.
You would rather a woman be forced against her will to have a child she doesn't want so that child will likely grow up in poverty (which your taxes will pay for), unloved (possibly CPS taken, again taxes pay for), or just neglected (see reasoning two). The truth is you pro-lifers don't give a sh!t about the child once they're born. I don't see any of yall volunteering at homeless shelters or offering money or support to single mothers. No instead you shame them. You make them feel like sh!t for the decisions they already regret. You will not lose sleep at night because a woman you don't really care about anyway has an abortion.
'Conservative' politicians are ruining the USA with their faux morality that is used to justify their misogyny and fascism. Real Christians should speak out and vote against this intolerable cruelty, which their savior never would have forced upon women in their darkest hours. Where is your Human compassion??? Where is your pro life rhetoric when your actual born children are being murdered by the guns you protect with more vigor than the kids they kill?

It is infuriating to have to explain why you need to have control over your own body at this day and age. And yet, here we are... It's almost surreal. Please read the blog parenting exposed to get a glimpse of the abuse and torture parents who should never had to become parents inflict on their children.
Load More Replies...What's absolutely amazing to me is a man can just pick up and walk away from a pregnant woman without looking back, but that woman needs to carry that child to term... her body needs to go through the changes of pregnancy, and then her body needs to go through the trauma of birth or a c-section.
