For disconnecting from my family after the death of my nephew?

My sister's dogged me and my son out while I'm grieving the loss of my nephew. There were some very hurtful things that was said about us. I cleaned my sister's garage for three days prior to this ( dog feces). After that she had no more use of me. I would take her to her doctors appointments prior to this. One of my sister's asked me if I would keep her daughter for her. I told her no due to the fact that my son was coming in from the military for the funeral and after he leaves he will be on deployment once he gets back. I just wanted to spend as much time with my son as possible. She got mad and started the conversation that eventually led me to just disconnect with them. Just to be clear...I love my family and I just wanted to keep the peace and do what's right. One of the sisters that talked about me was the mother of my nephew. Instead of grieving like we all should have been they were having a ball. I just want to know if I made the right choice.
