This New Airplane Seat Design Allows Economy Class Passengers To Lie Down
How many times have you felt your back hurt after a long plane ride? Or have you ever planned to have a nice quality nap while flying but couldn’t fall asleep because those plane seats are so damn uncomfortable? I know I have. Many times.
Luckily, there’s a US-based startup called Zephyr Aerospace, aiming to make plane rides more enjoyable for every single economy class traveler. Basically, Zephyr is a new airplane seat that allows passengers lie down while flying.
How cool is that?

“Most airline seats haven’t changed since the 1970’s. 99% of all Economy Class seats are fixed upright and impossible to sleep in. They force unnatural postures over long periods of time and can damage health,” Zephyr Aerospace states on their website.

“Airlines try to justify higher fares by bundling perks like in-flight meals, lounge access and extra baggage allowance. In a study we conducted, 70% of travelers would trade these perks for the sole ability to lie-flat and sleep,” says the Zephyr Aerospace team.

Apparently, Zephyr offers Economy Class travelers the comfort and privacy of an individual cabin. “Our design allows passengers the gift of multi-functional usage—to lie completely flat, lounge or sit upright with their legs fully extended,” says the team.

I have to admit, this looks really comfortable…

It also allows social distancing

“Airlines will be able to choose from upgrades like memory foam seats, black-out curtains, OLED displays, and other optional amenities,” claims the company.

Economy pricing? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha 😆😆😆😂😂😂
Yep! The airlines will find any way they can to squeeze more money out of their passengers. "What, you want to use the stairs to get to the 2nd level? That will be $25!" Plus an extra fee to get 2nd level beverage service. The guy with the laptop is not using a tray table, probably because that's extra, too.
I have a good friend who’s a pilot for Delta. Do you have any idea how expensive changing the seats will be for the airline? If you keep the same aircraft, you are cutting out literally hundreds of available tickets, and the cost of changing it. If you build new aircraft, even more cost, plus the additional size would require more fuel and stronger engines. They won’t change a thing unless they’re forced to, this is the most optimistic post I’ve ever seen.
Those take up about 2 to 3 times more space than one regular economy seats. So they will be priced the same as 2 or 3 of today's regular economy seats.
I think that is the point of them being double decker. So instead of being two seats side-by-side, it is two seats on top of each other.
In the diagram on their website, the show around 26 of these seats in the space of around 20 lay-flat business seats, so they are a bit of an improvement, but in that same space, they can fit around 50 regular economy seats. So don't expect these to be only slightly more expensive than economy.
Considering existing airplanes floors and ceilings are structural and to remain into mockups of sizes 737/a320/330 families, that doesn’t look at all there’s all that available height floor to ceiling even removing headbins. Nice concept, but just it. Won’t be surprised nothing else exist but a website, actors in a video, mockup and a few airliners logos just to get a few clicks
and honestly, who will be the ones to TAKE the top row seats..?? not I..!! l cant even climb the ladder to a top bunk anymore..and where do you put your hand luggage..and it does not show WHERE that extra bit of seat comes from to turn it into a bed..ALSO, WHERE ARE THE SEAT BELTS..??
If it means I can lay down, I'll climb that ladder
They’re just gonna put more seats there and make lying down a first class choice
