For humans, sleep is essential for overall health. It allows us to recharge, consolidate memories, and repair the body. Scientists think that animals need sleep for similar purposes.
After all, they are particularly vulnerable while enjoying it, so there must be considerable advantages that outweigh the risks, right?
While there are many mysteries surrounding sleep that we still can't solve, there's one certainty that nobody dares to doubt. Animals look absolutely adorable when they close their eyes to get some well-deserved rest.
To drive this point home, we decided to expand on one of our earlier publications and put together a new collection of pictures showing the quirky and sweet side of sleep. From dogs and cats to geckos and owls, continue scrolling to meet the gang.

Fox Sleeping On A Skylight
Since the amount of sleep required varies greatly from species to species, let's look at the other end of the spectrum.
The average giraffe, for example, sleeps for just 4.6 hours per day. For the most part, giraffes tend to sleep during the night, although they do get in some quick naps throughout the day.
They can doze off standing up as well as lying down, and their sleep cycles are quite short, lasting around 35 minutes and sometimes even shorter.

I know from biology that "perching birds" are merely a single order (albeit a HUGE one) within the class Aves (birds). I know owls are NOT in that order, even though many live in trees or other high places. I know they don't fold up nice and neat like fowl, flamingos, etc., I know they don't always make sprawling nests like birds of prey. But I still picture them sleeping a lot more like perching birds than like THAT. (Perching birds have a special mechanism in their legs that means that when gravity pushes their bodies down onto their bent legs, that force is used to tighten their grip on branches, which is why they don't need to expend energy to sit on a branch.)

I hate to burst y'all's bubbles, but that hamster most likely isn't sleeping for the heck of it, it's stuck. Wheels that have big gaps like this commonly have hamsters get their feet stuck between the bars and are unable to get them out. If you get a hamster, PLEASE get them a proper wheel without the gaps!

Between the house and the fence, I imagine there was no way to go lower. Once cut, they may not see a need to take it lower. We took the one in my yard down at ground level--but they had to do it in segments, horizontally.

Elephants are another animal that sleeps very little. Some researchers have documented their total sleep time as just 2 hours per day.
(Interestingly, scientists can tell elephants are sleeping when their trunks stop moving.)
Elephants, like giraffes, likely only sleep for a few hours each day due to their massive body size and need to graze often. Predation risk may also play a role in how little they sleep, given how far they’ll travel while awake.
Some elephants have been observed traveling for nearly two days without sleeping at all.

I have two girls who were litter-mates. They were found as newborns. The woman who runs the rescue had hoped to have them adopted together because they were so timid. Once I saw them I couldn't resist and adopted them as soon as they were old enough! They just turned 1 year old and still cuddle up together like this. It's adorable!

My cats were only separated once, when I had to board them. One broke out of her cage and started climbing until she got to her sister's. I never separated them again. When one of them passed (15 years later), the other lived only a month, the think she died of a broken heart.

I've provided a forever home for more cats than I can recall off the top of my head. Some siblings remain inseparable for life, whereas others can't tolerate being in the same room with each other. Kinda like humans.

During sleep, the human body cycles through four stages. Physical changes take place during each stage, such as decreased temperature and heart rate.
Different types of brain activity also occur during each stage, with more activity taking place during the fourth stage, called rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep.
In addition to the fluttering eyes behind eyelids, this sleep phase is also characterized by muscle twitching and waking-like electrical brain patterns. Although humans can dream during any phase of sleep, they are most likely to during REM sleep.

I agree. Munchkins are purposefully-bred to have achondroplasia, which is a mutation - a form of dwarfism. They cannot jump like a normal cat. Can you imagine having normal feline instincts to run and jump, but be unable to? They're also prone to lordosis, pectus excavatum, osteoarthritis, and stomach/digestion issues. Humans are intelligent enough to rationalize being born with achondroplasia, and we have a good enough quality of life as humans in general for those born with it. But animals suffer through their entire lives, have no idea why they are suffering, and have no way to relieve or rationalize their suffering.

My 15 year old cat sleeps with soft toys too. She has a few to choose from but she won't sleep without being snuggled up with at least one of them đ„°
Many terrestrial mammals, including primates, and some reptiles, birds, and aquatic invertebrates also experience REM sleep. But again, the exact amount varies widely depending on the species.
Because elephants sleep so little, they don't experience REM sleep every day. In contrast, house cats can spend up to 8 hours a day in REM sleep.
Some animals, such as dolphins and whales, show little-to-non behaviors associated with REM sleep, although whales sometimes do exhibit some muscle jerking that might be representative of REM sleep.

Even though mammals and birds both spend considerable periods in REM sleep, REM seems to have become further enhanced in mammals. In birds, periods of REM last only a few seconds at a time, implying that the animal would be rapidly going into and out of dreams again and again.

We buried our cat Lucy with Duckster, the toy she chose as a tiny kitten and loved her entire life, in her arms. Duckster was a yellow stuffed duck-shaped cat toy. He went through several âoperationsâ where I repaired his seams and re-embroidered his eyes. Lucy would periodically âbatheâ him in the water bowl, as well as drop him in the laundry basket to be run through the washer and dryer. She loved that toy from the time it was twice her size to the end when it was half her size. Makes me happy to think theyâre always going to be together.

My GSD Ember slept like this with my (her!) cat Wintressia too. I got them around the same time when I was a kid, and they were BFFs for life. Ember (90 lbs) would carry Win (8 lbs) around in her mouth all the time, and Win loved it. Ember died when they were 12, and Win never got over it. Win lived til she was almost 20, but she wasn't the same after her best friend's death.

Once I lived at a rescue ranch. My 1st night I went outside my bedroom porch, which was open to the yard. These domesticated animals were amazing! The only goose came over & sized me up then a pot belly pig came to the edge of the stoop so shyly; I started cooing at her. She climbed into a makeshift bed which was a pallet with a moon chair pillow on it and gazed at me adoringly. I sang her to sleep! Unforgettable moment đ·

Poor pupper. I'm sure she is living her best life with OP and has no idea she was born different from other doggos, but irresponsible breeders/backyard breeders need to STOP breeding merles together. It results in "double merle" dogs like Pinkman, who are often deaf and can have microphthalmia (abnormally small eyes) or can be blind. Again, I'm positive Pinkman is a happy pupper and OP gives her a great life, but shame and groin lice to the breeder who bred her.

I checked OP's other posts - kitty looks gray in OP's other pictures, actually! But since gray is a dilute form of a black coat, this kitty is still a black cat, genetically speaking, just a dilute one XD I had a gray kitty, and you could see "ghost" tabby markings on her coat in the right lighting. I currently have a black cat, and she looks reddish-brown in sunlight! XD

It's very likely it's a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, a Tamaskan Dog, or a Siberian Laika :) those breeds are all 100% domestic dog, but they still have a wolfy look to them/their coat patterns :)

Think of kittens like babies. They sleep a lot. Wonât change much when they grow up, but in between naps, they will be a lot more active.

Iâve never seen one sleeping but I see them kill my chickens, sit in the pasture scratching themselves, snow diving and the new one, drinking out of our automatic livestock water that it has to stand up on its hind legs to drink from it. Sometimes I hear them in the middle of the night. Look up what does a fox say. (The funny song and the actual sounds)

That pattern is called "brindle"! It isn't seen in a ton of dog breeds (Boxers, Greyhounds/Whippets, Dutch Shepherds, and Akitas come to mind; this pupper looks like an Akita). I've always loved it. It isn't sex- or chromosome-related like calico coats are in cats, though!

GSDs are best friends for their life AND yours. I'm still not over losing my soulmate, my heart-dog, and she died in 2010. I loved other dogs before her, and I loved other dogs after her, and I will love more dogs in the future, but she will always have my heart.

Absolutely, or Coleman and other brands make furry soft sleeping pads for pets that warm in response to their body heat. I got one for my kitty and he loved it. It definitely works. It wasn't very expensive either and they also make electric ones that are a bit more heavy duty than a human heating pad. But you're on the right track to keeping kitty off the baked goods.

Ours like to sleep on our radiators. We have the old fashioned coil radiators for steam heat. We keep folded fleeces on them to make them more comfortable. For the cats.

Hamsters are solitary animals. I had 2 brothers who bit each other when sharing a cage. At one point, I had 12 cages for 12 hammies. These 4 might be little babies or males females. Better separate them if males and females. They could produce... a lot.

I forget what it's like to sleep well. I am so jealous of these little whisperer that they can sleep so good. On the plus side I am up at 2:34am scrolling through because I have insomnia. So I am entertained but jealous but now it is slowly turning to anger!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

These pictures make me happy. I'm doing a similar phot project except of animal butts. If you are ever sad or depressed, just find a group of pictures of animal butts or, as this showcases, animals sleeping and your troubles will feel a little less important.
