Kids and dogs can be great friends with the right connection and a little common-sense training. Children can learn valuable lessons about how to care for other living things, be responsible, kind and patient.
Dogs of course get an energetic playmate who can keep them entertained for hours on end, however they can find kids annoying at times too, so it’s important to teach respect! Things like personal space, the right kind of petting and leaving the dog to eat in peace are important messages to get across to your kids, because nobody wants to risk getting a little bite. Like us, pups can only take so much and are prone to snap if they are pushed too hard.
However, kids and dogs have so much in common that this is a pretty rare occurrence. They are much more likely to be the bestest buddies in the world! I have an almost identical picture of me and our family dog from when I was a child. Even though our dog didn't really like hugs, just like most dogs, she still let me do this.I suppose she understood that at least it made ME feel good.

When I was a little kid, my teenage babysitter always brought her dog with her. She was a really smart dog. She would come to bed with me, which was a great way of getting me to bed at a reasonable time! I bet the girl felt a lot more secure with her dog there as well. Wish I could remember their names.

My mom had a dog bodyguard when she was a kid. My grandma could leave her in her stroller with the dog next to her outside while going into the pharmacy for 5-10 minutes. The dog would stand guard and have no problems if people wanted to pet him but lay one finger on the stroller and the fangs and growls would come out. He was probably the best (and only) bodyguard my mother ever had.

They are. But even when properly socialized and with correct supervision, the occasional pittie will go off the tracks. Friend of mine, their dog got SO protective of the newborn baby that NO one but the mama could touch the baby. That's not good. My SIL's pittie was DUMPED, she had scarring that we were all pretty sure was from being used as a fighting dog, but she was so sweet-tempered that she was probably dumped for that reason. I figure dogs are like people...mostly pretty good, occasionally outstanding, and a few dangerous ones, in ANY breed.

Omg! I have 50 yr old black & white snaps of myself like this. My dog was gifted to me when I was 3 weeks old. We were best buddies for 15 years. She slept at my bedroom door and no-one could get in there. Too special!

I'm plenty comfortable with a kid licking a dog's head. There's plenty of germs to go around for a kid on any given day. My daughter grew up in a house with three cats, four dogs and a yard full of chickens. I took her to the doctor when she was 15 because she had a sore throat. The doctor asked if she was allergic to any antibiotics. I told him I didn't know, she'd never been sick enough to need them.

My dog had a favorite blanket that he randomly chose the day we got him, we couldn't separate him from it. He would actually go to the point of clinging to it as I tried to pull it away, resulting in me pulling a blanket along with a lab who had his legs wrapped around it. It got so torn up that it was thrown away, much to his sorrow.

Every boxer is a fiercely loyal and protective nursemaid to children. This one is older (gray around muzzle) and is probably making sure nothing outside could be a danger to his/her child. I grew up with a boxer and they are amazing. (and thank you to the owners for not clipping the ears!)

Long ago when my son was 2, he was sleeping in a playpen as we were visiting my grandmother. My dad went under the house to retrieve the puppies so they could go back to the neighbor who owned the (very patient) mama dog. He then wiped all the puppies down, and put them in the playpen with my beastlyboy. All 10 of them. Boychild did not know WHAT to do, being licked all over his face, but he was gentle to them!

Golden Retrievers really are the softest, gentlest, most patient dogs that are perfect at adjusting thier play style to whatever species, age and size playmate they have and teaching them gently at the same time. The absolute best all rounders for energetic people who are happy putting time into fun tricks and jobs as well as long runs :) my Golden Retriever is my assistance dog and saved my life daily!!

Many people now a days forget that years ago every house with a baby also had a dog, they called them RATTERS. The dog's slept under the baby's crib and killed rats trying to bite the babies. Sounds like a good trade to me.

Reminds me of when I got my dog as a puppy. My daughter was still cosleeping with me (she was about 2 1/2) and he would sleep in between the 2 of us. He now only sleeps with me, but he checks on her every night to make sure she is sleeping soundly
