“Don’t Get Under The Table:” Teacher Shares Tips On Staying Alive If An Active Shooter Is Nearby
653Kviews
Americans of an earlier generation will probably remember the ‘duck and cover’ type of safety drills at school, a somewhat optimistic protection measure in the event of an atomic explosion. While the threat of nuclear annihilation has subsided somewhat, many residents of the ‘land of the free’ still live with a nagging undercurrent of fear, highlighted by this Twitter thread by “V” (@lareinavicc.)
“I received active shooter training at work today that I feel will save my life in the unfortunate (and likely) event that someone will open fire in public so I’m gonna share my takeaways. Some stuff is obvious, the rest might not be,” she wrote.

After being taken to task for her “and likely” comment, she felt the need to clarify with the following disclaimer: I don’t say “likely” to offend. I say likely because mental health is a GROWING issue in this country. It is steadily being underfunded, yet guns are becoming more and more accessible (legally). Interesting. But that’s a convo for another day.”

Because yes, in 2017 almost 40,000 people died in shooting incidents in the U.S. That is an insanely high number and a modern day tragedy in a nation that should be doing so much better. But although the risk of getting caught in the crossfire of a shooting is real, saying that it is “likely” is definitely an exaggeration. Speaking to Bored Panda, V later clarified this. “It’s been a mixed response. Most folks were upset about the “likely” tweet,” she told us. “In hindsight, saying “likely” was an exaggeration.”

That said, the fact that workplaces feel the need to train their employees on how to react in the event of an active shooter is now a sad reality. Because it’s always better to be prepared if the worst were to happen isn’t it? V is a teacher at a school, and with 113 people killed or injured in school shootings in 2018, it definitely makes sense for teachers to be knowledgeable and well-trained about the risks. “I’m a science teacher. I absolutely love my job,” V told us. “I feel safe at work but the training definitely gave me some solid steps to follow if I was ever in that kind of situation because, before the training, I would’ve gotten under the table.”

Her eye-opening thread runs through some practical advice on what to do when faced with an active shooter incident, giving some common-sense tips that could one day save your life. Some of them may seem obvious now, but logic and reasoned thought can quickly fly out of the window when faced with the panic of a life-or-death situation.

When your survival instincts kick in, the choices you make are critical. While it may feel natural to hide yourself away somewhere and hope it passes you by, acting positively and taking the initiative will increase your chances of getting out alive.

This could either be escaping through any available exits as soon as possible or, if that’s not possible, using some tricks to make it harder for an attacker to enter your space.

As a last resort, it’s time to take the fight directly to the attacker. But how do you confront someone who is armed and dangerous? You have to outsmart them. Easier said than done, but any steps to increase your odds of survival are necessary.

Even if you did happen to take a bullet, your chances of making it out alive are still in the balance. It’s almost impossible to imagine what it must be like to have been shot and be wounded, but there are critical steps you can take to stay alive until medical help arrives on the scene.

Tragic events in the past could’ve been less lethal if some of these common-sense steps had been common knowledge. That’s why, as sad as it seems, this kind of training is necessary and important and can end up making the difference between life and death.

It's ridiculous that a post like this even has to exist

especially if you take into account how much factually incorrect / faulty information it contains.
Which parts are inaccurate?
You know this because...
Sad to think so many people in the U.S. think their shooting hobby is more important than other people's lives. P.S.: Hope she's a maths teacher, since she doesn't know how to spell "barricade".
I'm glad you mentioned the "baracade" thing because I was incredibly distracted by that.
Actually, it's 'tourniquet', but other than the spelling/grammar errors, there was some good (and some slightly misleading) info. Sad that we even have to prepare ourselves for such an attack.
how about the "turnicate" instead of "tourniquete"? EDIT: Sorry, I added the E at the end of torniquete it from Spanish.
Jessica, I honestly didn't read that far, but I probably wouldn't have known what word that even was supposed to be.
Also: "You gon wait on them" and "You need to physics it"

Sad to think so many people in the U.S. think that driving hobby is more important than other people's lives.
This is how people ignorant about guns speak..Gun hobbies have nothing to do with shootings. People who like guns, and are safe with guns always get placed in this GUNS GUNS GUNS chant gun haters spew......because most people don't shoot at others. And banning guns will not stop bad guys from getting guns. So if you are happy in a country were you cannot defend yourself from an attack, then by all means stay in that country, and keep your ideas and thoughts to yourself.
You mean people alive in their countries because they're not overrun with guns?
Mark, how many kids have taken the guns from their "gun hobby enthusiast" parents? The two are absolutely related.
Please forgive the language. How about do something about all the fucking guns?
To many shooters in the US who want to hang onto their guns - just in case someone else has a gun
L Duncan ---Did he have a gun? if so - report him - another gun isnt going to help. if the authorities assume people are armed - wouldnt you prefer the authourities KNEW no-one was armed? Guess then they wouldnt need to shoot anyone, Would you not have preferred if the police had not been armed? - or would your family have just shot them?
Namely a tyrannical or ineffective government. When police and campus officials wouldn't help me with my stalker in college, I took self defense classes and got my concealed carry license and posted photos of my target shooting online; never harassed me again. My grandfather was shot by police who entered his property without a warrant, my brother nearly killed by "authorities" during a "routine" pull over, & several acres of family land were confiscated for a pipeline without due process. "No justice, no peace." Why do folks who see clearly how insane our officials are believe they'll protect you?
